Nevermind the ending sequence which rips off Halo 1 completely yet doesn't manage to be a tenth as exciting.

The campaign in 3 is nowhere near as terrible as the second games campaign. Halo 2 is utterly uneven with some dashes of greatness whereas Halo 3 is hampered by its opening and finale but the level run from Crows Nest up to Covenant is solid with moments of genuine greatness. Whilst I miss the one world feel of Halo, the idea that you’re travelling around a persistent engaging world, I feel that Halo 3 did a lot more to make the levels feel like a natural progression and actually created some genuinely great set pieces.
The biggest problem Halo 3 has is that without Elites the Covenant forces feel kind of neutered and as such Bungie added a lot of artifical difficulty ramps for no real reason.
Unless you’re dealing with a huge pack of them, or one of the Invincible Hammer guys, the Brutes are just never anywhere near as challenging as the Elites and their use in the game always felt clumsy to me.
Of course this is all a matter of opinion.
