Etrian Odyssey

are you a serious hardcore RPGer?

seriously. I am beyond excited for Etrian Odyssey.

Maybe its the nostalgia of playing Bard's Tale 3 on my Commodore 64 and using graph paper to map out labyrinths.

This game has been on my radar for a while and to see that its coming out next week, I've got to rush to my EBgames and see if I can still preorder this niche game. Atlus is known for its hardcore RPGs but to see this old school 1st person mazer in the vein of Wizardry and the first Phantasy Star makes me extremely excited.

The fact you actually draw your maps using the stylus is really geeking me out. The only hands-on review Ive read is from IGN but that's enough to sell me on this game.

anyone else remotely interested in the old school rpg days?

Bard's Tale 3 was the Bomb!!! Oh, the heady days of the Commodore 64.

Etrian's Odyssey is beyond awesome. I never realized how rewarding mapmaking is in a dungeon crawler or in this case a forest labyrinth crawler.

This game is a must own for old school RPG fans. I cannot get enough of this game.

Yeah, I picked this up yesterday, and it is very addictive, despite my getting wiped out twice on the first floor alone. In the immortal words of Strong Bad, my hit points in this dungeon are embarrassing.

It took me awhile to realize I needed to scroll down my skill list to find "Cure" for my medic. If you don't have your Medic learn Cure immediately, you are dead meat.

I think this is my favorite DS game so far. Crazy addicting. Love the mapping system. It's really tough though, the opening boss on the third floor is way beyond my skill level.

Yeah, I can't put this down either. I just got to the third floor but gave that red ball of fury a wide berth.

By the way, there's a pretty easy way to harvest money--create a team of five Survivalists and load all their beginning skill points into Chop, then take them to the harvesting point to the east of the first floor entrance. You'll be able to harvest 30 items, then take the one-way shortcut in the southwest corner of the harvesting area back to the entrance. You can get at least 500en from the mugworts, red fruit and hardwood, which is a more than suitable per diem for your daily warp-wire/inn/apothecary purchases.

I've been playing for about 5-6 hours and still mapping the second floor. For some reason I cant get my characters enough hit points to beat that Screaming Antelope.

I've only now acquired the warp wire (which at least helps me explore the lower levels easier).

Its funny that spare moment I get, I'm turning this game back on. This game is just as addictive as Puzzle Quest.

i had to recreate my party names from one of the early Wizards games because the game reminds me so much of that game.

the mapping is great fun. i always loved doing that with the early games. i was reminded of times i'd enter a dungeon and know exactly how many steps, key clicks, i need to get to the stairs to the next level. the turning to face every wall to make sure not to miss a secret door is also very reminiscent of those games.

i've hit the seventh dungeon level. it's best to avoid all FOE's until you get to the wolf ones. once you can handle those, around 18th level for your party, you should be fine for everything above it.

there's a lot of taking one monster out and returning to the town to recover and going back down, which i don't mind one bit because there seems a huge sense of accomplishment with anything in this game.

Goodness, I don't think you have to wait that long. I'm at level 7 and just beat the Ragelope on the 2nd floor. (With some luck.)

How many HPs does a ragelope have?

I've attacked for over 180 HP and that damn thing still won't die. And I"m using Volt on his ass which does like 40 damage.. gah.

I keep hoping if I can level up just 1 more level my mage will have enough HP to survive a hit from that ragelope.
the lower levels of the first dungeon seem to be created so you can play cat and mouse with them. you can track and avoid them which i generally what i did, after i tried and got one shotted by them. i used that technique until i was forced to confront a group, not sure what level, at which point i could handle that group and move on from there.

You should be fine with the Ragelopes and big bull things, but the Slayer (I think that's what it's called) on lvl3 is a different story. My guys were around lvl10 when I first tried to fight it. It hits for over 100 damage and even my strongest characters were attacking for less than 20. I've gone further down, met a bunch more monsters I could beat, but I still haven't gone back for the Slayer yet.

So does B. Guard.

Have your protector learn B. Guard and she/he will take the hit for anyone on the back line.

I finally beat the Aggro Deer by using B. Guard.

I've been using F. Guard, but yeah, it's great. I guess if you get F. Guard & B. Guard to lvl 3 you unlock Defender, which guards your whole party.

I think I glitched my game.

I finally had enough hardwoods (snickers*) and hardshells to complete one of the missions.

So I went to the pub to report on my mission and hit the wrong button and canceled the mission I was working on.

CRAP!

Well I restarted that mission, and since I already had the materials I needed to find, it said I had all the materials. So I tried to report my findings again... and it said I didn't have enough materials?!! What?

I'm confused. The only thing I know to do is cancel the mission AGAIN and sell all my materials and restart the mission over. What a pain in the ass.
i think if you have the mission, selling the items will complete it. it's one of the quests for the shop keeper, right? those are completed by selling the goods she's loking for. you collect the reward for the pub afterwards.

Yeah I just figured that out at lunch today. I had to sell everything and then collect my reward. Doh!

thanks for the help though.

Any tips on beating Fenhir the Wolf without getting gang banged by his buddies?

I actually beat him at lunch but only had one man alive to fight his 3 brothers that joined the fray and died AGAIN!
It was probably luck but I beat him on the second try before any of his buddies arrived. Party was around lvl 15, I had my Protector casting Defender every round and my Alchemist attacking with Flame. (He's weak against fire, I'm not sure how you'd get past him without a Fire Alchemist.) Plus after trudging down five floors I had some Boosts ready.

His attacks nearly one-hitted my party members but a combination of Defender and sheer luck kept them alive. I had my Medic casting Salve or Cure depending on how fucked up someone was. For the Protector, you could also take you chances with Front Guard and Back Guard, or if you've built up Provoke/Parry it's probably the most effective.

Short answer: Bring a Fire Alchemist and make sure your Protector is doing something.

yeah there is that fire booster item I put on my landsknetch at the very end of my battle with him that totally kicked his ass.

But again, his 3 wolf friends were too much for me when he was the only man alive with 30 HP left.

I'm level 16 so I think if I up myself one level more and buy a lot of healing items, I can survive.
Move forward just enough to get him to follow you, then back ALL the way into one of the alcoves at the left or right of the entrance. It will give you a few rounds of fighting before the other bad guys join the battle. Use defender if you have it, if not use front guard. Have your healer use salve every round. My fire magic was low, but I had lvl 9 poison, so that kicked his ass pretty well.

I died AGAIN last night. This fight is pissing me off. I killed 3 wolves.

Then tried to lure Fenhir backwards only to run into him at the top of the room. I beat him again, yet all the other wolves finished my party off after my short victory.

I spent all summer playing this game and finally beat the game last week. Now I'm playing through the extra 5 levels.

Its somewhat still entertaining, but I maxed my characters out to Level 70 and now they won't receive any more experience... which is kind of a bummer.

But I hear that Etrian 2 is in the works with the ability to transfer my characters over to the new game. If that is true, then that will be truly awesome.

Just picked up my copy of Etrian Odyssey 2 and will try to transfer my characters over to the new game today.

Holy Hell its like a 30-character Password to transfer characters. This is going to take a while, just to get started.

Can't wait.

I gotta say, ET is probably the hardest game I have ever played. After six months I have now descended to the third strata! I'm sure my speed isn't helped by utilizing two different sets of heroes so as to have every possible combination on hand, but really. You have to set aside a serious chunk of time and effort to take down the evil black FOE bosses.

When does ET2 come out in the states? The only real improvement I could ask for is displaying the damage done to groups of enemies at the same time if you hit them with a multi target attack, so as to cut down battle time a little bit with no loss of clarity.

I'm playing ET2 right now, playing the first dungeon.

after you beat part 1, you get a 75 character password. Type that into part 2, and the only thing you get is to keep your Guild Name and a medal (which ups your new character stats, for whoever wears the medal).

So basically you must make new characters again and start out level 1. The game seems HARDER this time around. But everything you learned about part 1 will make you survive longer in part 2.

the best new feature is the L button, you can press it for an automatic assault where everyone attacks and makes the battles very short (if you characters are stronger than the foe).

There are other neat tweaks they have added. When in the shops you can look at the bottom screen and shift through your characters to find out what armor and weapons they can receive and upgrade to (probably the best feature ever in an RPG).

The bad news is you still must sell your items 1 by 1 rather than bulk.

I've only played about an hour, but its still Etrian's Odyssey and still awesome.
Hey neaux, I think there is a feature to sell items in bulk if you press y when you are selling. Definitely does seem to come in handy.

I've been playing a bit of Etrian Odyssey 2 lately, and I'm kind of hooked on it. I was being abused early on, but I've gotten my character to level 7 so far and I'm making progress mapping out the 2nd floor of the forest. I tried the original and was slaughtered... never even made it past the intro where you map out the first floor. I gave up. Almost gave up on this one at the same spot, but I managed to stick it out and have since then been enjoying the heck out of the game. It's very old school and kind of difficult, but it is a blast.

yeah I found out by accidently pressing "y" that numerous items that were the same would sell..

I'm currently only on map 4, but once you get past map 3 the game has eased up for me.. just like the first EO the game gets easier, until you make it to the next Strata. So once you get past level5, i'm expecting it to get hard again.

regardless, you still Die a LOT. The thing I hate the most is you get ZERO experience from killing FOEs.

I'll be playing this game probably until August and that's being optimistic.
