MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (AP) -- Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.

The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip.

"We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said.

But parents of the sixth-grade students were outraged.

"The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them," said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip.

Some parents said they were upset by the staff's poor judgment in light of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 students and professors dead, including the gunman.

During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on a locked door.

After the lights went out, about 20 kids started to cry, 11-year-old Shay Naylor said.

"I was like, 'Oh My God,' " she said. "At first I thought I was going to die. We flipped out."

Principal Catherine Stephens declined to say whether the staff members involved would face disciplinary action, but said the situation "involved poor judgment."

Fire drills are one thing... but this? Wow.

I understand what they were trying to do but how about letting parents know first? Fuck. I hate people.

If only one of these kids had a gun, these mock shootings could have been avoided.

Damn! Beat me to it by a few seconds!

Seems like a good idea to me. Kids have to learn how to not get murdered somewhere.

The one 100% guaranteed way to not get murdered is to commit suicide. Let's teach them that, shall we?

How the fuck could anyone think of this as a good idea?

Let's see, how many school shootings are there a year? Maybe one or two throughout the whole country? How could "teaching" what might happen in a situation like this in order to prevent it in the future seem like something feasible? Seriously, please explain to me how someone could think this was a valid method of educating someone and doing some good... I just can't believe that a teacher would come to this conclusion.

This did nothing but terrify some kids for no reason. Fuck these people, I hope they get their asses sued off.

I dunno, I'm a bit conflicted on this. I mean they conduct fire drills all the time, and while granted this is a bit more extreme, and probably just paranoia on the part of teachers everywhere, maybe they should come up with a "In case of mad gunman" plan?

But just think of how much more likely a school is to have a fire than a mad gunman. I can see some people making the case for something like this happening with the current school shooting hysteria going around, but would you really want your kids to be trained like this? It's not like a fire drill. It's not something you can prepare for. Mentally, sure, but what's acting out things going to help anything out? You're going to learn how to better cower on the floor and try not to get shot?

But when they do fire drills, they tell the kids it's a fire drill. They don't tell them that the building is really on fire.

It could have been worse. They could have been forced to watch Cry_Wolf.

After it was over did they point out all the hidden cameras? "GOTCHA!"
They should have brought out the hazing staple of setting off fireworks in a large metal pot outside the door. Who wants to take bets on the ratio of dry to wet pants after that?

On the up side, all those families are now shopping for new houses while shedding those pesky, "How am I going to pay for college?" worries.

Maybe their town had a recent influx of Koreans and they're taking the proper precautions.

Exactly.

I can't even add to Alex's thoughts, and I'm kinda too appalled to crack a joke even.

Sounds extremely sadistic.

They would have had to hold me back if this shit happened to my kid.

I'm amazed they even suggested it in this PC, litigious world we live in.

I had to bring a permission slip home for Mom to sign just so I could see Olivia Hussey's bits in Romeo and Juliet and that was late 80's.

Well hang on, as I remember it the alarm bell would just go off. There wasn't any announcement, and we'd always check (hopefully) for smoke to see if there was a fire.

I think the real issue here is the age group being targeted for this - sixth graders? When was the last time an elementary school shooting rampage took place? Sure, we've had a few sporadic incidents of unthinking kids this age blasting their peers, and even younger (I believe my own glorious state holds the record for the youngest school shooting in the country), but that's a whole different ball of wax. I can kind of see this sort of drill taking place with high schoolers and collegiates (especially in the wake of the VT massacre - there were an assload of complaints that the school had no set guidelines for what to do in the event of a crazed shooting rampage. Have we become so cowed that we don't instinctually realize that the best response to a psychopath shooting guns at everyone is to either beat feet the other way or barricade yourself in the nearest safe space?), but grade schoolers? All that does is scare the piss out of them for no particular good reason.
