Dragon Dynasty DVD Discussion

I was at my local record/DVD store and noticed that they had new release of Jackie Chan's Police Story 1 & 2 from Dragon Dynasty. Of course, I was tempted to pick one up, but Dragon Dynasty's record is spotty to say the least. Their home video releases have been a bit better than their theatrical hackjobs, but I wade into any of these purchases with a healthy dose of cynicism. Anyone have any idea how these releases stack up to the originals?

Their record is pretty strong, as far as I know. I own both PS 1&2, and they're both top notch. The best they've ever looked in R1 or R0, and the commentary is pretty fun and informative (when Bey's speaking). I think the main bonuses for the fans are the new interviews w/ Jackie's stunt team members (the main henchman from PS1 look now like he took one high fall too many), and Bey's location guide in the Part 2 disc.

Dragon Dynasty is better than Miramax/Dimension. No tall order, that. But, their release is certainly not the best POLICE STORY has looked in Region 1 or 0. That honor probably probably belongs to the old New Line laserdisc. If you have the old MR. NICE GUY New Line DVD, one of the bonus features is a preview for New Line's POLICE STORY, and it looks better than Dragon Dynasty's offering even though it's a much older transfer made from SD materials - the colors are stronger and white and black levels are a lot more sane. As for current releases, IVL/Fortune Star's POLICE STORY looks better, but the mono sound is out of sync and the 5.1 remix is your typical crappy Hong Kong remix. Mono sync on the Dragon Dynasty is... well, imperfect, but it's only noticable in spots. All in all, the Dragon Dynasty's probably the version to get, but this is in spite of the shortcomings of its video quality, a contest the R0 IVL wins easily. Brett Ratner on the commentary track is good for comedy relief. The special features make up for the lackluster transfer. Unfortunately POLICE STORY III: SUPERCOP is marooned over at Miramax/Disney, and they don't give a damn about any of their Hong Kong titles, even more than they didn't give a damn about them when the Weinsteins were still there.

Is Dragon Dynasty going to be releasing a version of THE KILLER at some point? I could have sworn I read that somewhere.

My mind must be slipping from old age, as I totally forgot about the recent IVL/Fortune Star trilogy box set (even though I've owned it for over a year). I was thinking of the old 4:3 Megastar discs.

IIRC they do have THE KILLER, but I don't think they've announced a release date for it yet. HARD-BOILED is coming out in July though, in a 2-disc set w/ new interviews and extras.

Dammit. Double-dips, here I come. The transfers of my Hard Boiled and the Killer DVDs suck(same as the Criterion transfers, I believe).

The new transfer of Hard Boiled looks fucking amazing. Its almost weird to be watching this without constant specks of dust and scratches. I wonder why Criterion didn't release this instead...

I bought the 'Above the Law' 2-Disc which is pretty good, ok commentary by Bey, some nice featurettes on the cast etc.

I have the Hard Boiled so far and its a nice release. I want to get more of them. The quality so far is pretty good and the extras are interesting and informing.
