Pope Reminds Indigenous People: Catholicism was Good for You

One of my favorite portions:

Quote:
APARECIDA, BRAZIL — Pope Benedict XVI ended his first pilgrimage to the Americas much as he began it: with a searing attack on diverse forces, from Marxism and capitalism to birth control, that he believes threaten society and the Roman Catholic faith.

And in comment likely to generate controversy in Latin America, the pope said the New World's indigenous population, "silently longing" for Christianity, had welcomed the teachings that "came to make their cultures fruitful, purifying them."
The Pope apparently doesn't know much about history.

Also funny:

Quote:
As he has done frequently, the pope condemned abortion, gay marriage and "the facile illusions of instant happiness and the deceptive paradise offered by drugs, pleasure and alcohol."
Deceptive paradise? As opposed to the concretely proven, absolutely iron-clad existence of the heaven referenced in Catholic doctrine?

The pope has actually come out and taken a stance that is expresslly anti-pleasure? It's amazing this faith couldn't hang on to me past high school.

Fruitful.

Say what you will about Falwell, but the pope is a much more destructive force. Demonizing birth control in a developing country so you can boost the numbers of your 'flock' at the expense of those that die of AIDS? That's murder.

And you know they crunched numbers up at the Vatican, too. "Listen, Papa, if we can undermine condom use by 25%, we can boost the average Catholic family to 4.33 persons. That's money in the bank, baby! Sure, we may lose a few unmarried swingers, but they were never gonna be big tithers, and most are gay, anyway. It's win-win!"

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the pope is a murderer.

In his defense, he's condemning pre-marital sex altogether, not just the jimmy-hat wearing variety.

You'd be right, if he were just against pre-marital sex, and anti-condom by proxy (since married Catholic couples should be pumping out kids by the litter). But he's specifically outspoken against birth control.

The Pope is against sex being used for personal pleasure before all else. His stance is: don't have sex outside of marriage, and don't have married sex unless you're willing to accept a pregnancy. Sex is supposed to be for species propagation first, pleasure second (the Church approves of good, pleasurable sex between a man and wife, allowing for a child.)

It's a position I disagree with, but is certainly reasonable in its own right.

No, it is unreasonable, archaic, and responsible for human misery on an epic scale.

Well don't worry, the Catholic religion will be there to provide warm sustaining comfort and meaning to all those HIV positive, impoverished kids through their needless (but divinely ordained) suffering.

Although no one could deny the tragedy of blue balls, isn't that laying it on a bit thick?

Nope.
