XM Radio Suspends Opie & Anthony

WASHINGTON and NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Radio announced today that the company has suspended Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, hosts of "The Opie & Anthony Show" and ceased broadcast of the show for 30 days, effective immediately.

XM Radio deplored the comments aired on "The Opie & Anthony Show" last week. At the time, the company strongly expressed its views to Opie and Anthony, and they issued an immediate apology.

Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.

As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to on XM. "The Opie & Anthony Show" appears on one of XM's explicit language channels (XL). Whenever a radio is tuned to an explicit language channel, the letters "XL" continuously appear on the screen. XM frequently mentions on its explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain listeners and tells how to "block" channels that feature this type of content. Channel blocking is available through xmradio.com or by calling 1-800-XMRADIO.
Can I be the first to say.... PUSSIES. What a bunch of pussies they are at XM. They know what kind of show it is, it's easily blockable, and they don't even stand by their biggest pulls? Way to go, guys.

What's next then for O&A, Internet radio? Cause I thought they were supposed to get away with anything on Satellite. Especially considering that the Condi Rice thing wasn't nearly the worst thing they've done.

Did anyone catch the show they talk about? I can only imagine the venom that O&A spewed after all of this.

I've never heard the show, but "our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them." really bugs me. If you get taken off the air for something you say, it must not be creative freedom. Maybe they should have worded it as creative freedoms.
How harsh is the show? I've heard some praise for it on the boards but have never heard them myself.

I can't believe that satellite radio is already starting to cave. What is the point of XM if they're going to start censoring and suspending? Not good news, especially when they are merging with Sirius. There won't even be a way for customers to switch to a different provider. I'd love to hear how Stern is going to react to this.

He was fine with it. Didn't think raping and beating of women was funny. ANd that like Imus they are getting suspended because it wasn't funny.

He also said XM is going down and this is a way to get rid of them.

O&A aren't big draws anyway. Very few people signed up when they went to XZ. Stern noted that a while back.

Alright! 3 posts to turn this thread into an O&A Vs. Stern war. Hoo hoo.

If you missed what happened, this is it. A guest just talks about fucking some ladies. The funniest thing was that it wasn't that funny, or even them, it was just a weird homeless guest that they have on all the time.

I'm still really interested in what their last show was like- they must've taken some shots at XM for not standing up for them.

Which automatically makes it true. As for their last show, they didn't know they were being "suspended" until after the show ended. They noted that they had a meeting to go to, and then the suspension was announced at the end of the Ron & Fez show which airs after their XM show.

howard saying people aren't funny is always the funniest part of his show...

I prepaid for XM for a year to listen to Opie and Anthony uncensored. I wonder if they'll give my money back, now.

He talked about raping the president's wife. Maybe that had something to do with it.

So what? They didn't hire these guys to report traffic and weather.

and?

the big draw for XM is that it's supposed to be completely uncensored.
No, those are good points, I'm just surprised that aspect of it hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. Maybe XM feared government censorship?
Could be. They probably don't want to make waves since they stand to lose a lot if the FCC decides to block their merger with Sirius.
I honestly dont think that this is about the comments at all. Its about the pending merger and XM wanting to show that they are willing to put a stop to stuff like this (cracking on government officials, keeping their jocks in line). I also have a theory that Howard and Mel karmazan wanted O & A gone so that Howard would rule the roost once the merger does happen. Cause honestly, other than O&A and Howard and XM having MLB and SIrius having NFL, its the same shit on both so the merger is kind of pointless other than from a money standpoint.

Does the suspension apply to their pre XM broadcast stations as well? I'm asking because I don't have sattelite radio (I'm cheap, sue me) and usually listen to them on FreeFM on my way to work. Also, is their Virus tour going to be affected?

No, I'm pretty sure audiences will continue to not show up for that.

That's cold, Bob. Funny, but cold.

I listen to Stern, but I'll say I think the O&A suspension was a bit overboard. As someone mentioned, they didn't really even say anything, it was the "guest". This is basically a "no tolerance" rule I think that's being enforced since the Imus thing. And also with the impending merger, I think it's XM's way of showing the FCC, "See, we can police ourselves, if need be." As with the Imus thing, and the recent firing of a pair of DJs in Arizona(?) for calling a Chinese restaurant and ordering "shlimp flied lice", it's a big overreaction. But that's what our society has turned into these days.

Had XM not suspended them, there probably wouldn't have been much publicity. I didn't even hear about the act itself, I just read about the suspension. Also keep in mind that their show is broadcast on terrestrial radio as well, so that might have played into the suspension too.

I can only imagine the losers that were laughing at that dumb shit.

Most people get satellite radio to listen to this junk? I doubt it.

The only reason I was a subscriber was to listen to music with no commercial interruptions, and the occasional talk shows. But this, this is garbage.

Now I have podcasts, and they are free, so I wonder how satellite radio can stay relevant at all?

I'm all for more suspensions of completely unfunny deejays. Keep 'em coming.

Does that mean less unfunny people here? Here here!

When did the likes of Opie and Anthony become crusaders for free speech? Why isn't there anyone interesting campaigning for this right?
Not for nothing..but Opie and Anthony are far from XM's biggest pull. These guys are going to be fired not for the comments, but because they aren't pulling in subcriptions. The comments are an excuse for XM to get out of the contract.
Do this is only pulling more attention to their show. Maybe that's what XM is looking to do...
