From DVDFILE.com:
The wildly popular sci-fi picture Serenity is getting a 2-DVD special edition release on 21 August from Universal. The film will get a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 tracks as well as a slew of other goodies (special features have yet to be confirmed, but you can rest assured there’ll be at least one commentary track and an entire bonus disc full of featurettes and the like). SRP is $29.99.
Nothing specific has been formally announced, but it looks like Hot Fuzz fans have a reason to rejoice: Sometime before Q4 2007, Universal will be releasing the recent hit British film on the HD DVD/standard DVD combo format. No specs or bonuses have been announced, but rest assured that we’ll keep you updated.
Here are some upcoming Criterion releases:
Criterion has announced their slate of July titles, and there’s a nice mix of out-of-left-field pictures and fan favorites to mention. First up is the 10 July release of Three Films By Hiroshi Teshigahara (a box that includes Woman in the Dunes, Pitfall and The Face of Another). These films have been decidedly hard to find in the past, so it’s nice to know that Criterion will be giving them new transfers and mixes, as well as including four Teshigahara short films and a documentary about the filmmaker. 17 July brings the hotly-anticipated release of Billy Wilder’s Ace In the Hole – which will be coming to DVD with a new transfer and mix as well as a commentary from film scholar Neil Sinyard, a documentary on Wilder, a few interviews (with Wilder and with screenwriter Walter Newman) and the film’s trailer. 24 July brings the long-anticipated Tarkovsky gem Ivan’s Childhood – which will come to DVD with a new transfer and mix as well as a documentary on the filmmaker – as well as the Jean-Pierre Melville classic Les Enfants Terribles, which will arrive with a brand-spanking new transfer and mix as well as a commentary from film scholar Gilbert Adair, a handful of featurettes, a stills gallery and the film’s trailer. The Teshigahara box has an SRP of $79.95; Ace in the Hole and Les Enfants Terribles will retail for $39.95; Ivan’s Childhood will have an SRP of $29.95.
Make sure to have your loinclothes and iron shields ready by mid-summer, boys: Warner is going to announce the July release of 300 sometime in the next week or so. No details have been formally assigned – expect it on Blu-ray, HD DVD and standard DVD with great tech specs (rumor is that Warner may finally give a Blu-ray release Dolby TrueHD lossless audio with this title). There’s also a rumor floating around that the film will be released on the highly controversial TotalHD Warner Bros. high-def format. We’ll keep you updated.
7 August will bring the MGM release of Bubba Ho-Tep: Hail to the King Limiated Edition DVD. It’s a strange move, because the initial release of Bubba Ho-Tep included a TON of bonus goodies, but from everything we’re hearing, this new edition features all the OTHER bonuses that were included on the R2 release of the film (as well as more newly-created stuff…? No one’s returning our calls). The R2 discs came with an extra Bruce Campbell introduction, and two new interviews – one with director Don Coscarelli and the other with Bruce Campbell himself. Again, nothing is set in stone at this point – we’ll keep you updated.
Paramount has announced the 21 August release of Dexter: The First Season, Showtime’s smash new drama. All 12 episodes from the first season are available here, presented in 16x9 anamorphic transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, and will arrive in this 4-DVD set with a few cast commentary tracks, a featurettes and (interestingly) two bonus episodes of the Showtime series Brotherhood. SRP is $42.99.
And last but not least:
Anyone who was a monster-movie-loving kid in the 80s can officially start salivating: Lionsgate has announced the DVD release of The Monster Squad on 24 July. This 2-DVD special edition features a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, both 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital mixes, as well as a commentary with director Fred Dekker and actors Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert and Ashley Bank, a handful of deleted scenes, a ton of featurettes and some original trailers and TV spots. SRP is $19.95.
