The Lost Boys vs. Fright Night

I brought this up in a thread once long ago, but it did not get much of an argument going.
Last night I saw the Lost Boys at my local theater as part of this ongoing "flashback flicks" thing they're doing. I've never seen the first half, so I was happy to see it in its entirety. I went with the usual friends, and most of them always disrespect Lost Boys because they think Fright Night is amazing. Well, I myself can't really decide between the two. They talk about the bad clothes, earings, etc that damaged The Lost Boys in the aging category...yet Fright Night has aged worse than Melanie Griffith. I myself don't let any "aging" ruin the movie for me, but it just seemed like a weak argument.
I like both movies, and plan on watching Fright Night again soon... But until then, what do you guys think?

Probably in the minority, but I looooove me some FRIGHT NIGHT. Roddy McDowell is so much fun in it.

Fright Night. No contest.
Both show their age (That night club scene in FN? Ouch!), but that just puts them on equal ground. Fright Night has a better plot, better vampire, better effects, and Roddy McDowell.

Fright Night is still the shit. Lost Boys is silly.

Near Dark owns them both.

Fright Night by miles. Isn't it about time that flick gets a decent DVD release?

Better tits, too. (That scene with the binoculars at the beginning made quite an impression on me when I was a young teenager.)

Fright Night - no question. The movie is a just a solidly constructed light horror flick paying tribute to the kinds of B vampire pics that don't get made anymore. Plus the third act is absolutely wild. "Welcome to Fright Night - for real!"

Lost Boys has a soft spot in my heart mainly for nostalgic reasons. Keifer is great in it, though, especially his reading of such lines as "maggots, Micheal, you're eating maggots."

Fright Night, without question. And, yeah, Amanda Bearse was a real cutie back then. Did Chris Sarandon put her off men forever, perhaps?

How long before some jackass decides to remake this one?

The Lost Boys has an outstanding soundtrack. Nanuk is awesome.

Fright Night has then-future gay porn star, Evil.

I love The Lost Boys, unconditionally so, but Fright Night is indeed the better film, despite missing this primo ingredient....

The only bad thing about Fright Night? Fright Night 2.

After watching Fright Night again last night I gotta say, it's better than I remember. I think what puts it over Lost Boys is the final confrontation. There's a lot of build up in Lost Boys and after seeing it on the big screen I was kind of let down. I remember it being more epic... Death by stereo is ok, the bathtub stuff is ok...the fight between Kiefer and Jason is pretty short. There's a lot of build up and then everything happens rather fast. A good chunk of Fright Night is the final confrontation, and it's only one vampire and his gay servant, and it's still great. Melting, bats, wolves, etc. All superior.
But I can't say I don't love The Lost Boys as well. But maybe not as much.

I love them both in all the right ways, but I'd have to go with "Lost Boys" in the long run. And, yes, I will readily admit that nostalgia plays a big part in that decision. But the movies has so many great quotable line. To wit:

"My own brother, a goddamn, shit-sucking vampire. You wait 'till mom finds out, buddy!"

"As a matter of fact, we're almost certain ghouls and werewolves occupy high positions at city hall."

"Death by stereo!"

"One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach, all the damn vampires."

Also, it prominently features Haim's odd "Rob Lowe" poster and this guy:

(Parenthetically, as much as I love "Near Dark", it blows a lot of that good will in the third real)

So... I should probably watch Fright Night then?

Marcy D'Arcy? Lez? Huh.

Anyway, Fright Night.

I think this quite effectively lists every reason to hate Lost Boys.

Yeah, but did you see the picture?

Gotta throw my lot in with the Fright Night crowd. I did rather enjoy Lost Boys, though. FN is definitely better paced, and the sense of danger feels infinitely more genuine than in Lost Boys.

I gotta go with "Lost Boys" here. Big fan of that soundtrack, Jaosn Patric's hero work, and the great casting on the part of the Lost Boys themselves. Fright Night's Chris Sarandon just doesn't do it for me.

They both have pretty sweet soundtracks. I guess Marcy puts Fright Night over the top.

Oh, I agree with you there. Oily sax man is a hero for the 80's.
