I just saw this last night with my brother, who is a zombie aficionado of sorts. I remember leaving 28 Days Later with the thought that I MUST buy this as soon as it's available on DVD. I just didn't get that sense form this one. To me, the shaky camera work that made the 1st one so original and enjoyable (because it was used with some level of restraint) was over done here. So many scenes were shot in the dark, with only brief flashes of light to illuminate the action like a really slow strobe light, or seen thru the night vision scope on a rifle, or whatever. At one point I actually couldn't tell what was happening; it's not like, I know someone's bludgeoning an infected to death here but I can't see it as clearly as I'd like, it was actually "What the fuck is going on? What am I looking at here? Did that character die, or did they kill the infected attacking them?" I thought it took away from the movie, personally. Maybe it's just my penchant for graphic gore; hard to appreciate a good bludgeoning when you only see nanoseconds of it. Although I must say, this film wins the award for "Best Use of a Helicopter in a Film" every year, hands down as far as I'm concerned.
My brother by contrast, says he has a new favorite zombie movie. He thought the shaky camera angle thing added to the sense of chaos. He also liked the whole post apocalyptic reconstruction vibe, as he feels that's an area neglected in many zombie movies/books (or not done well when it is treated). He also thought they had a neat way to reintroduce the infection.
I haven't seen any buzz 'round these parts about this film since it came out; just curious what you all thought.
