How do I cut this guy loose?

Two years ago I met a guy who would become a very good friend to me. Now from the get go the guy always kinda bugged me to some degree but lately he's become fucking unbearable. I won’t get into detail, but in a nutshell; he's loud ,overbearing, immature , he talks about me when I'm not around(even though I do nothing but defend him), and embarrasses the shit out of me every time I hang out with him. Now I have been avoiding him for the past two months or so and for a while it looked like he was kinda through with me also. However two weeks ago, out of the blue, the guy starts calling me trying to get me to hang out with him sometime. He is annoying but to put things in perspective the guy has done a lot for me in the past two years(getting me laid a couple of times, letting me crash at his place several nights etc.) So on one hand I just don’t want to tell the kid to out and out go fuck himself on the other I can’t hang out with someone who is determined to act like such a major league asshole. Advice?

I dont have any adequate advice for Whirlybird, but what part of the following do some people not understand?

The only man that could ever have my heart is a mister Christina Bale. But seriously the reason I'm having this conundrum is the fact the guy is unstable and has said he considers me his brother. So I am having a lot of guilt about telling him I don't want to be friends with him anymore.

Tell him honestly what the problems are and let him decide whether he can get his act together around you. Either he can, and you stay friends with the new, improved him or he can't and that's it.

Just meet him up and humiliate him.

Thank him for whatever he did for you, but tell him what a kid he's being, how he should man up, etc.

He sounds just like the kind of insecure guy that will take that kind of talk hard and probably kill himself.
