I love how everyone's refusing to come and post here out of sheer disappointment with you and are instead giving me positive rep.

If you'd kept a tighter leash on your woman, this could have all been avoided.

DaveB shoots and scores. One of the smartest men I've had the pleasure of dining with.

I really get irked with the sexist comments, too. You'd think that with all the obvious lines being drawn with race and what makes one an obvious racist that there'd be a similar line drawn for sexism.

There ain't... it's a shame, too. But hey, I'm a feminist, and a guy, so I guess that means that I don't have balls, right?

(Slater would have typed something that would have made me laugh those balls off.)

This is becoming uncomfortably like that scene in THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN where Andy tells Jay to... well, put his wife in a restraining device best used for dogs.
Well, what I said about the week of crying/bitching... is at least half true. My wife will tear my head off for asking what she wants for breakfast and apologize 3 hours later because "it's probably PMS".

Now that I've had to spell it out, it's pretty un-fucking funny. My apologies. I wasn't trying to knock it out of the park anyway (cause you know I can't).

Still, wouldn't it be nice if there was a pill for that? I mean, for women's sake. I hate that their hormones make for such an emotional rollercoaster. I really do. Really.

You're a Beta-Male. I am too. I'm only sexist on the 'net... where it's anonymous.

Come on, Alex. You can do better than that, can't you?

It's unfortunate they've left only you to defend those comments up top, because you're doing a fairly lousy job of it. Also, I hope they start giving me negative rep, so I know whose posts not to take too seriously from here on out. I haven't gotten any from this thread yet.

Na, just a bad joke.

My girl's take-

"Fuck them both. He's pussy whipped. A guy can complain about a girl pms-ing all day long in my book. Just as long as she can tell him to fuck himself and go eat a ton of chocolate. And looky there, would she be mad about me stereotyping myself more?"

She might be a little biased.

Ironic post of the day?

The only reason you started with me here was because I called your wife a cunt. I didn't know she was your wife, and I'm sorry for that cause I do like you otherwise (or your online persona, at least) but it doesn't take back just how wrong you are in this situation. You're letting your personal feelings get in the way.

We were just making a bunch of silly jokes, she took it waaaay out of proportion, and I called her on it. Sure, I probably didn't have to be so harsh, but someone posting on these boards really should know better. There are plenty of kinder, gentler ones on the internet.

That's pretty much all I have to say. Sorry it got blown out of proportion.
MissZooey, I guess there would have been more optimal ways to "meet" you. Dave's been a great member of these boards for a long time, and for a while his music posts were one of the few bright spots.

Seriously, guys, a male-dominated discussion of an anti-menstrual drug? Could you get any fucking lamer than this?

I don't think Alpha vs. Beta male has anything to do with sexism. I've known a lot of basement dwelling hermits who've got nothing positive to say about women.

I think your comment kind of speaks to the whole sociological subject, though. You automatically linked brawny tough alphamalism to showin' a lil' sexism... and thus inferred anyone who'd stick up for women a... yeah, let's do it... a pussy.

I was going to post, anyway, and it's not like it would have been unusual for me to do that without her jumping in first. As for me being whipped, give me a fucking break. I've been posting on this board for longer than I've even known my wife, and I've always called people out for stupid, racist, and sexist posts.

So, no. That's not the only reason I started with you.

I would have called you on it even if she were a complete stranger. I might have handled it a little differently, but, trust me, it's not just because she's my wife that I think you're a bit of a shit for calling someone a "dumb cunt" for criticizing what's basically a bunch of guys trying to make like Dice and even failing at achieving that sort of deep insight.

The jokes weren't that silly, and, as Boomstick demonstrated, it's not as if we were alone in noticing a particularly nasty bent to them.

As much as I sympathize, I don't like the idea that certain subjects are verboten to post about because of the gender issue.

Certainly some of the posts could have used a better sense of tact and humor, but you must admit Moltisanti's and Jcassady's posts were funny.

I thought it was informative. And I had no idea that Depo destroyed sex drive, so that's score one for information. My wife's allergic to the pill, from the various types she's tried (it gives her fierce migraines) so I do think this was, at the very least, important information to talk about and maybe get anecdotal stories. So the thread has some value.

In short: get funnier, or something.
I'll side with Alex on this one. While finding MissZooey's diatribe the funniest thing in this thread, she needs to realize thst 99% of the things posted on this sight are bullshit or inflamatory. These parts are especially absurd:

If you think actual violence is being advocated, then call the cops. If not, grow the fuck up. Our society runs on sarcasm now. It's as vital as oil.

Quote:
And, finally, if you have a friend or significant other who is that ill for that long prior to her period, it may be wise for her to seek medical or psychological help. Not that I'm a doctor... You should probably refer to my response to the second quote. Could it, perhaps, have something to do with your referring to her behavior (her totally justified behavior, btw) as "crying/bitching" that causes a big part of the problem
"Hey, honey! Period more than a week away, and you're already wanting to kill me? This chick on the movie message board says you need to see a fucking shrink! Maybe it's 'cause I call you Thunder Juggs?"

And, isn't it the whole reason that these jokes get made is because some think that it's, "totally justified behavior" for someone in pain/misery to spread the joy around. Justifiable my ass. It's not my fault. I'll sympathize by do more of the housework, and I'll let some of it slip by, but you bite my head off 'cause you were born without a Y and you get called on it.
Humor is subjective, so let's throw that track away, ok?

As far as the cunt line, yeah I'm a bit of a shit. Never denied it. But just to set things straight Dave, you think there's nothing wrong, annoying or bitchy with her first post in this thread? Seriously, let's see you stand up for your woman some more... I'd like to see you try and justify it again by saying that she knew that it was all joking. Cause the tone of it sure didn't seem like it. Her "Repulsive" line didn't sound like she knew I was kidding.

So, to sum it up, yes, your wife sounded like a dumb cunt. For thinking that I was advocating violence against woman on a messageboard where I'm using my real fucking name and then coming here to whine about it.

You picked yourself a winner there.

I think that's really all that's being said. Talk about periods until you're blue in the face, but be intelligent about it. Just harping on how much of a drag it is when your wife's PMSing isn't funny, in and of itself. Calling her a bitch or a cunt or joking about how you want to shoot her isn't, either. They just make you look like an asshole.

Yeah, it just gets more informative by the minute.

You don't think attempts at humor can be found repulsive? Don't be an idiot. Of course, she knew you were trying to be funny. But you weren't; you were creepy. Sure, it's subjective, but combined with the other posts around yours, this thread justifies a lot of feminist complaints about how men really think about women. Try to couch that misogyny in humor, but it's still pretty apparent.

But you liked Moltisanti and Jon's comments. Were they not misogynist because they were actually funny? I'm getting confused here... you say you would have been fine if they were all funny, going after the humor, and now you're saying that the whole thread was basically some "No Ma'am" meeting that justifies why women feel that way about men. What's your stance again?

The funniest thing about all of this is how your wife stepped away and is allowing you to stand up for her. You said you didn't need to do that!

Will you at least admit that this thread was all stupid jokes that would've died away without anyone thinking about it until she spoke up? Cause that's really all this is. No one else would've had fault with the posts in the thread, no one would have said anything. Because we know goddamn better how snarky this place is, and yes, how you have to be thick-skinned.

Startin' to feel a hair weird about being talked about, so I'd just like to say that I was aware that you were attempting to be funny, Alex. I also recognized that the other posters were attempting the same. Not only were the things I cited above unfunny, but they were creepy, too.

Additionally, no one said these things couldn't be discussed, but there are ways to be both funny and/or informative (I'm glad the good word about the sex-drive destroying properties of hormonal birth control was spread). One of the things I like about CHUD is how funny so many of the people who post here are. Much inappropriate work giggling goes on. I guess that's why this thread surprised me so much. I'm used to gross-out, borderline offensive humor on here, but chewers tend to be quite conscious of the line between what's funny and what's totally out of line. I wanted to point out the difference.

Oh, and, hello to Boomstick (we should dine together again sometime) and nice to "meet" you, Rex.

Erm, I was trying to end it gracefully, to serve as a contrast to the way I started it. Anyway, I figure once someone calls me a cunt, there's really no continuing to argue with him. I didn't ask DaveB to step in for me, he just did.

Plus, I've spent the past hour commuting home from work and running some errands and there's no wi-fi on that pesky bus!

I'd say it's more that they were funny because they weren't misogynist. There's nothing women-hating about having a menses fetish. There's nothing woman-hating about making fun of the term Aunt Flo. There's nothing woman-hating about pointing out that Patrick is drawn to threads about menstruation. There are legitimately funny things in this thread, but I thought it was pretty clear that we're talking about the comments that MissZooey quoted and their ilk.

I think of that as less "funny" and more "her job doesn't allow her to spend the entire day at a computer like mine does." But that's subjective.

But she's not the only one who found fault with the thread. She's just the first who commented. And shame on her for doing so, because a message board is totally not the place for commenting on what other people are saying.

Pardon my ignorance... Didn't even realize that you were THE DaveB's dumb cunt. I just thought you were a garden variety dumb cunt and DaveB's dumb cunt was ALSO insulted. For some dumb reason, I didn't even make the connection in this thread!!!!

So, hello (again)... let's do the movie (ala Hellboy n' dinner) thing again.

Reading this thread is rather irksome... ANYTIME you make a joke, you're liable to offend someone. I think some of the best jokes I've heard have offended someone or another... but it's not so much what's offensive/not offensive that I'm having an issue with.

It's the subject matter.

If someone was dropping "N" words left and right, there'd be much more outrage. If there was gay bashing going on, there'd be more outrage. We don't see it as much here because people are much more cautious of the situation. If someone threw some unfunny racial slurs down, they wouldn't be able to say "ahh, just kiddin' guys!" and walk off... I'd be Don Imus all over again.

Yet Don Imus would have easily been able to keep his job if he'd said Sweaty Looking Bitches instead of Nappy-headed Ho's.

Well, I'm having an issue with the offensive/not offensive myself. Kind of. I do enjoy a good offensive joke now and again, even a good, ragingly sexist offensive joke now and again (One of my personal favorites - What do you tell a woman with two black eyes? Nothing the bitch hasn't ignored twice already.) I think that it's, in large part, about context (say, a wife beater telling that joke to a complete stranger vs. me telling the same joke to my oldest friend) and about recognizing how offensive is too offensive. Alex is right (did I just say that?), it is highly subjective. So he can think I'm a cunt and I can think that his sense of humor sucks and that his "jokes" weren't very funny and completely out of line all at the same time (I think it is possible to be completely out of line and hilarious at the same time, by the by), and we can both be right. But I think I should be allowed to say something about it without getting called a bitch repeatedly and having sexual jokes made at my expense. Living in a society is awesome.

So, what was said earlier was only offensive because it was either:
A) Not funny ( or at least up to your high standards of comedic wit).
B) Said by, "Wife beaters."

You lose your side of the argument here. You're saying that it's ok to make offensive jokes, so long as you don't deem them, "too offensive," or you are familiar enough with the person to know they won't be offended. Most of the responses by Alex (and others) point to the fact that this is CHUD, where we are usually familiar with the general populace, and on this message board, we ACTIVELY TRY to be as offensive as possible. If you don't like it, tough shit. Join AICN. Entering any thread, especially one as poignant as an "Aunt Flow" thread, and admonishing the posters on their behavior tends to suggest that you are taking yourself and the thread entirely too serious.

In short, even if the attempt at humor fails miserably (as many of my posts do for example), LIGHTEN UP.

Cool. If this is so, let me try.

Ok. Going back...

Dave- you wouldn't have started anything if I hadn't called your wife a name. You wouldn't have had a problem with this thread. If you did, it would have been weird and out of place, much like her first post. As it is, you're too invested in this personally to be able to take yourself out of it. You're wrong here, but you won't admit it, and are just dodging around throwing insults at our senses of humor in a, yes, holier than thou way. You don't judge what's funny for all humanity. I love sexist, racist, disgusting jokes. Lots of people do. On a board like CHUD where you're free to express it I don't expect to be attacked about that, and neither should anyone else. Sure, if someone takes things too far everyone will jump on him, but no one said anything that was so out of place here. This is stat quo for the boards.

I never would've have gotten called on this if you weren't such a prolific and strong poster on these boards, and maybe I was a little too harsh, but that's how I do things. I don't know how to start fights gradually. It might have been different if I knew her relation to you, but it might not have. I really do like you on here, but like I said, I'm disappointed.

Zooy- Ok, I don't know you, and you might be a nice person after all, but you can never tell over the internet. You have to understand why I was annoyed that you made those assumptions about our posts. For you to jump in a thread where it's obvious people are joking and not meaning what they said at all, regardless of what you read into a post, and say those things is ridiculous. It's way more offensive to tell someone that they're horrible people who don't understand woman than to make a few bad jokes. That's what annoyed us. If you can't tell, I'm joking about most of the stuff in this thread too, except for the fact that it was a cunty post. Take care of Dave tonight, he's going to be pent up.

And it's funny, I almost started a Misogynistic joke thread, starting off with the two black eyes one.... maybe we're not as different as you think.

Now, now - I never called anyone here a wife-beater. It's more that, despite having read CHUD for about as long as I've been with DaveB (nearly five years), the context I had established here did not prepare me for the tone I encountered in this thread. While I do think that the speaker is important, context is equally as important. In short - I've learned to expect a lot more from you guys. Sorry.

It doesn't matter if I think they're too offensive, it matters if your audience thinks they're too offensive. But when you're posting your potentially offensive jokes on a public message board and I have a registered screen name on said message board, guess what? I'm your audience. So don't be shocked when someone calls you on your bullshit. And, yes, I think it's important to consider who you choose to tell your jokes to. Would you tell some vile sex joke to your mother? No. Would you tell it to your best friend? Yes, of course you would.

Quote:
Most of the responses by Alex (and others) point to the fact that this is CHUD, where we are usually familiar with the general populace, and on this message board, we ACTIVELY TRY to be as offensive as possible.
I know this. Again, I've been here, mostly lurking for about five years now. Normally, it's hilarious. Sometimes, it's not.

If you don't like it, tough shit.
Same to you if you're annoyed with my having something to say about it.

Do you even know what "poignant" means?

as an "Aunt Flow" thread, and admonishing the posters on their behavior tends to suggest that you are taking yourself and the thread entirely too serious.
You want an adverb there, chief. Am I supposed to be taking this seriously? Or is this part of the joke that I'm not getting?

In short, even if the attempt at humor fails miserably (as many of my posts do for example), LIGHTEN UP.
I've never quite understood this - a person (or a group of people) make a sexist/racist/homophobic joke (or a series of such jokes), someone calls them on it, and he/she is told to "lighten up." I think something to this effect has been said to me at least three or four times in this thread now. So, what? Hahahaha - you think my emotional state once a month means I should be shot? Or I should be actively restrained and controlled by my husband? Yeah, that's totally hilarious.

I don't know how many times I have to go over this, but yeah, I would have. I was going to. And it probably would have been weird and out-of-place like her first post. There's no way you can tell a bunch of people who think they're being funny that they're actually being weirdly aggressive and unfunny without coming off as judgmental. Sorry, but I call 'em like I see 'em. If that makes me judgmental, so be it.

You're wrong here, but you won't admit it, and are just dodging around throwing insults at our senses of humor in a, yes, holier than thou way.
When I think I've been wrong about something, I'll admit it. I'm not admitting it here. And, again, it's not about you not being funny - lots of posters here aren't funny. You and others here, on other occasions, have been funny, so I'm not condemning your overall senses of humor. It's what you're not being funny about in this particular case.

And I'm still waiting to hear how I'm "holier than thou." You're the one who keeps saying you're "disappointed in me," as if you're on the moral high ground here.

I love sexist, racist, disgusting jokes. Lots of people do.
Count me in. These weren't jokes, though. They were weirdly angry comments about women that were unsuccessfully disguised by a veneer of frivolity.

On a board like CHUD where you're free to express it I don't expect to be attacked about that, and neither should anyone else. Sure, if someone takes things too far everyone will jump on him, but no one said anything that was so out of place here. This is stat quo for the boards.
Some of us didn't see it that way. You're perfectly free to express anything you want, but you're not free from criticism. Sorry, but that's how free speech works. It's too bad if it makes you uncomfortable.

Quote:
I never would've have gotten called on this if you weren't such a prolific and strong poster on these boards, and maybe I was a little too harsh, but that's how I do things. I don't know how to start fights gradually. It might have been different if I knew her relation to you, but it might not have. I really do like you on here, but like I said, I'm disappointed.
I'm probably more disappointed in some of you guys, actually.

It's Zooey. Thanks for throwing me a bone. I feel all validated now.

I can see it your way, but you have to understand, then, why I might be a bit miffed about finding a giant, unfunny stereotype fest in the middle of one of my favorite borads. If you don't want people to make incorrect assumptions about you, maybe drop the gun jokes. And, yeah, I'm a feminist, and, because of that I feel obligated to say something when I see and hear things like this. I can't ignore it, just like you can't not say it. So there we are.

For you to jump in a thread where it's obvious people are joking and not meaning what they said at all, regardless of what you read into a post, and say those things is ridiculous.
I'm not being willfully obtuse here - Why is it ridiculous for me to have a genuine reaction to something that has been written here? It was obvious to me that many of you thought you were joking, but it was also obvious to me that it really wasn't funny and that it crossed a line.

Quote:
It's way more offensive to tell someone that they're horrible people who don't understand woman than to make a few bad jokes.
I'm sorry if I offended you. I thought I was being funny.

I never said you were horrible people. I said that the things you wrote were horrible. I believe you were the one who went for the personal attacks first. You told bad jokes and you called me nasty, nasty names. So what does that say about you?

Quote:
That's what annoyed us. If you can't tell, I'm joking about most of the stuff in this thread too, except for the fact that it was a cunty post.
No, no, Alex. You called me a cunt, not my post. In fact, I'm thinking about making it my signature line - "Alex Riviello thinks I'm dumb cunt" and linking to this thread. Pretty funny, huh? That's the difference. I do believe I called you a jackass at some point, but there's miles between that and making jokes about my sex life and reapeatedly calling me a bitch.

And who's this "us?" I'm not exactly hearing a chorus of defenders of your right to say crass things.

Quote:
Take care of Dave tonight, he's going to be pent up.
I have no idea what this means. I assume that, again, it was supposed to be a joke, and it was supposed to have something to do with my sex life. Again, not really that funny.

And it's funny, I almost started a Misogynistic joke thread, starting off with the two black eyes one.... maybe we're not as different as you think.
Oh, no, I think we're pretty different. No sappy morals here, kiddo.

I find this thread visually offensive.

My 2 cents:

-- DaveB is known for calling people out for stupidity, even on the most mundane of topics (of which this is not) so I really don't think this is about defending his wife

-- Boomstick is right. Chewers get outraged when people use the word "gay" to refer to something lame or stupid, but calling a woman a "bitch" or "slut" is just par for the course.

-- travishall456 is partially right. It takes a certain kind of person to fit into the CHUD community. People who are thin-skinned will have the hard time not taking comments personally. However, Rex is also right in that CHUD is NOT about being offensive. It's one thing to be sarcastic and cynical, but quite another to be rude and offensive. It's a fine line, and unfortunately too many cross it more often than not.

As for the comments in this thread, I recognized them as jokes, thought many of them unfunny, but ultimately thought it a battle not worth fighting. I personally don't think any of the comments were meant to be mean-spirited -- although they can be taken as such -- and for me intent is what matters most. It is a shame that the people making these "jokes" feel the need to do so, but ultimately I found them to be harmless in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah, enough with the quotes!

Dave- Fair enough, you're allowed to criticize. So am I. Let's just agree to disagree, then. But to answer your question- what I find disappointing is that you can't remove yourself from this situation and realize that nothing here was said that was so wrong, until Zooey posted. It's not a moral high ground, it's knowing you being one of the more rational posters. I don't know if everyone is getting more sensitive lately thanks to Don Imus and Opie and Anthony lately or what, but it's strange. You both act like your sense of humor are more well-refined than ours, and that's where the snobby attitude shines through.

What you find to be mean-spirited comments doesn't appear that way to me. And since I'm one of the people who wrote one, I should know. Subjective. I never said anything in this thread that was meant to be taken too seriously. Well, till that cunt line.

Zooey- Ok, my bad. I was right in the first place. Should know when to trust my insticts.

I can quote my reps, if you'd like. (edited to protect the innocent)

"Now that's funny!"

"So its Dave B's wife she was dumb good job Alex."

"You're right, he's wrong. And Zooey needs (edited)"

"Kudos to you for standing your ground. If we can't make jokes about periods then we might as well end the boards."

"Watch out for the ones who don't know they are crazy...and their husbands!"

"Funny. I would say something but I'm afraid DaveB is going to come by my house and beat me down with a 100 page dissertion on the Kinks."

The war that ends the Chud boards will be low-brow vs. hi-brow. With all those reps Alex posted, I think this was the opening salvo.

I'll fess up to leaving this one, and I stand by it. With the exception of a couple lame jokes I've stayed out if this thread mainly because of late I've tried to avoid the confrontation-heavy threads (with the exception of making lame jokes in them).

On an almost daily basis here there are threads started about circumcision, pooping, and periods. These threads will always lead to juvenile jokes about said topics. Whether or not those jokes are seen as funny or not is a whole different matter.

I'd be foolish if I stated that some of the remarks that caused this rukus shouldn't be seen as offensive. Nothing offends me so who am I to judge what offends others?

I also can't fault DaveB for coming in to call someone out who insulted his wife. Husbands should do that.

Like I said, let the negative rep fly my way, folks. Don't be shy. I find it... interesting that I still have yet to get a single rep point (positive or negative) on this thread.

And that last one, by the way, is funnier than any of the "jokes" in this thread. Whoever wrote that SHOULD be posting here, if he's not already. And if he is, he shouldn't have wasted that one as a rep comment.

(I know next to nothing about the Kinks. It's safe.)

No one's going to neg-rep you... you've got too much green rep. You could destroy them.
