Death Proof Cut Unvelied

Kevin's article- http://www.creature-corner.com/?type=news&id=2492

I'm looking forward to it, even though I was in the camp who thought the girly conversations went on a little too long.

It's actually playing over here in NYC in July, so hopefully I can get some thoughts to you guys.
I too was in that camp. I was also in the group that felt it really wasn't very "Grindhousey", though I guess I had been set up for a fall by the super rose-tinted glass version of "Grindhousey" in Planet Terror. I'm glad we'll get to see the lapdance, but overall, I think the last thing Death Proof needs is more talking... not that I won't see it of course.

Plus, I'd much rather see a Jungle Julia lapdance. Or (please God) an Abernathy lap dance.
More talk or no, I will never not see a Tarantino movie in the theater. I can't wait.
The more time that goes by, the more I love Death Proof. I saw it twice and look forward to seeing (and buying) any versions that are released (talky bad-acting women and all)...
Sigh. Me too, probably, but I agree with Alex that Grindhouse is a single viewing experience that won't be improved by cutting it up and having a parts sale.

Not me- that was Kevin! I'm not sure how it'll work either, but I want to see the lapdance, dammit. I'm a scumbag like that.
Oh shit! Sorry man.

I'd probably be more okay with it if they kept the overall aesthetic of the double feature, and the color timing/overall print quality was mismatched on those "restored" scenes.
I think Death Proof would play fine without Planet Terror behind it. I guess what I'm saying is - Planet Terror ended up being an awesome bonus feature attached to Death Proof. I doubt I'd pay to see PT again if it weren't playing with DP. DP I'd love to see again, even on it's own.

ETA: The additional scene with Mike and the 2nd set of victims adds a bit to the story, imo. It removes any doubt that maybe he didn't hear them talking loudly in the diner about their profession (stunt women). Clearly he knew they were pros and just wanted the challenge.

More spin.

Quote:
Kurt Russell, who starred in the Death Proof segment of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez horror "double feature" Grindhouse, has expressed disappointment over the decision to release Death Proof as a separate feature for European audiences. Appearing today (Tuesday) at a news conference at the Cannes Film Festival, where Death Proof is screening in competition for the Palme d'Or, Russell, acknowledging that he hasn't seen the reedited longer version, said, "I'm disappointed for any audience that they won't get the Grindhouse experience. ... These [two] movies are going to go out there by themselves and they'll live their own life, but my prediction is that 20 years from now, you'll want the Grindhouse experience. ... [It's] something bizarre that you've never experienced before." But, appearing at the same news conference, director Quentin Tarantino defended the new version, saying that the film has changed "180 degrees so far as the emotion" is concerned and that he is particularly pleased with the way Russell's character has evolved in the editing. Standing at the rear of the news conference, producer Harvey Weinstein also joined in the discussion, saying that what Tarantino and Rodriguez originally had to remove from their films so that they could be combined "reduced the essence of the films." It would have been like "cutting [Tarantino's] Kill Bill and [Rodriguez's] Sin City to 70-minute versions," he said. He predicted that European audiences "and hopefully American audiences" will get a lot more enjoyment out of the films when they're seen separately

A chick that ugly has no business performing a lapdance. I heartily endorse the editing of that scene.
Chewers with 12,000+ posts can't be choosers.
I didn't think that chick looked that bad. I actually thought she was kind of hot, so I'd be psyched to see the lapdance (I'm not trying to turn this into a mess like that Dunst thread). And I'm interested to see if the re-edit actually does accomplish what QT is saying.
Chewers who proudly show off their 400 dvd's on the internet shouldn't judge.

The original edit worked perfectly because-
A) It was about damn time to leave that bar already.
B) It's a great meta-prank to play on the audience.
I found her pretty attractive. Not a smoking hot bombshell, but definitely not what I would call ugly.

But what would I know? I don't have 12,000 posts OR 400 dvds.
Yeah, the original edit sure worked. Just saying, it would interesting to see how some changes like these affect the overall feel/tone, or character development of Mike, for the film as a whole.

I've got over 400 dvds! I can contribute!

I thought she was the hottest of the bunch. She reminded me of a slightly whiter Rosario Dawson.
She was easily the best looking, and least annoying, out of that group of girls. But if the lapdance is fitting with the rest of the film there won't be any nudity so what's the point?

Oh, and I have a lot of DVDs. Many of which feature Gary Daniels.

Oh yeah, HE'S FULL OF SHIT AND TRYING TO SAVE FACE!

They had better put out Grindhouse in a single DVD. If they pull this split nonsense, they ain't getting a dime from me.

Madness.
That chick is completely smoking.

Odd looking? Sure.
Her ass and hair entranced me though.

It would've worked better had PT not pulled the same stunt 40 minutes earlier.
Butterfly looked like she resembled Rosario in the same way that Go-Bots resembled Transformers. Good enough if you can't get anything else, but hardly something that you'd show off. Or be happy with for that matter.

I only have like 40 DVD's. Video cassettes, that's another story.

And Bob Clark's Hammer of Reason hit the "Original Edit" Nail right on the head. I'm all about the meta-tom-foolery.

Ninja Edit: that is a good point though Whiskaz.

I agree with that, but not to the point that I think making Death Proof longer is okay.

Bob Clark must have seen the lifecast of Vanessa Ferlito in the Grindhouse book, because devoid of hair and color, she looks like an Orc.

But she's sexy as hell with hair and color, so we're cool.

She totally got DP'd in the head!

Now THAT'D be fun to watch. . .

She's a beast! And not the sexy Ben Kingsley kind.

In DeathProof. Lookin' all fugly and shit.
Eh, I feel like Tarantino was going for that swarthy 70s chick look. Just as photoshop and lighting can bump up her hotness, so too can she be downgraded to look like slasher fodder for an old drive-in flick. That whole first batch looked greasy and nasty. The second batch had Zoe, so they needed to balance it with some Rosario Dawsonicity.

I dunno, but she kind of looks like Michael Jackson in that photo. With long hair and tit. She was still rather attractive in the film. Not ugly, at least.

That said, I have no issue with the lap dance being left out or added back in.
