Its sports related, and because the tabloids and cable news networks have nothing sexier to push, it is also viewed as the most important issue in the entire world right now, at least, until Lindsay Lohan's next trip to rehab. It is amazing how detached you get from stuff like this when your sole sources for news and current events comes from the NY Times and The News Hour with Jim Lehrer.

Which was basically the impetus behind my first post in this thread, as it seemed like an entirely different world.

Except for the people standing outside the courthouse singing "We Shall Overcome" and holding signs saying "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." And no, that's not a joke, that actually happened.

As for his comments, if he took coaching that well on quarterbacking, he'd have a ring by now.

To quote my mother while we were watching his conference:

"Vick: I found Jesus Christ

Mom: Bullshit, he's been there all along, what's there to find?"

She's one of those who is sick and tired of people using the Jesus card to gain points with people.

That's an example of a vocal portion of the black community defending their own no matter what.

In a segment on ESPN News, Lucinda Bullock of Newport News, VA said the following:
"What we do is our private business and it should be kept that way, guilty or innocent." Then she said, "Appropriate punishment should be a slap on the wrist, maybe some community service...he's had a hard life."

Shockingly, she is African-American.
It's is disgusting some people will stick up for any disgusting behavior. I guess if Michael Jackson and OJ can garner support, why not Vick?

That quote is amusing. A hard life? Before or after his $100 million payday? People have excuses for everything. I've known many people that have had hard lives, they didn't throw it all away with sociopathic behavior. He's looking at 5 years in prison so I'm happy.

What is that quote supposed to mean? Do you have a link to a full transcript of her comments?

All the more reason not to fuck up what he has now by doing something so mind-bogglingly stupid.

She was one of the people ESPN News showed in a "man on the street" segment where they asked people in Vick's hometown what they thought about everything going on. What I typed is what she said. All the other people said it was wrong and disgusting.

I just can't comprehend what she could possibly mean by that sentence. Is it only in response to Vick's situation or was it meant for anyone engaged in criminal behavior? Whether you are found guilty of child abuse, or running an illegal dogfighting ring, it should be kept from public awareness? Wha?
Jeffrey Dahmer: "Hey, whoever I torture to death and eat in the privacy of my own home is MY business!"

(Not comparing Vick to Dahmer, blah blah blah...)

She is an ignorant fucking twat, plain and simple.

Most telling, for me, was his studied Clintonization of the language. Yeah, the Jesus Card was there...and it was unfortunate. But when he took responsibility for 'what I allowed to happen', I nearly threw something at the screen.

After that, all the talk about standing up and taking it like a man, doing the right thing, etc etc etc was merely window dressing on the the actual parsing of his unwillingness to do anything but spin it properly.

Coaching, indeed.

Probably has something more to do about not really being his friends and Vick being in a position where they won't be able to siphon money off him.

Having seen the clip about 9000 times thanks to ESPN, the overwhelming impression I get is that he's sorry not for what he did, but because he got caught and now has to deal with it.

On ESPN Monday Night Football, Suzy Kolber (cut your hair, it was so much hotter when you had it short) was interviewing Chris Mortensen on the Vick stuff. Talk about over-producing, how often does a network reporter interview a network reporter from the same company? Why don't they just go down to Mort for a 'report on Vick', rather than brining in more and more personalities.

Not really Vick related, but I loathe ESPN so it stuck with me.

Someone brought up how Ray Lewis was allowed to play while there were murder charges pending against him. First of all, that was a different commissioner, and second, Vick wasn't officially suspended until he plead guilty, while Lewis was eventually cleared.

Then this same person remarked that if OJ had killed Nicole's dog, he might have actually done some jail time, and then I just stopped listening.

Whoopi Goldberg joins in the fun!
Quote:
NEW YORK -- Whoopi Goldberg started her stint on ABC's "The View" Tuesday by coming to the defense of convicted felon Michael Vick.

Just 15 minutes into the show she brought up Vick's conviction on dogfighting charges.

"You know from his background this is not an unusual thing for where he comes from," said Goldberg.

"There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of our country."

Co-host Joy Behar seemed shocked at Goldberg's statements.

"How about dog torture and dog murdering," Behar asked.

"Unfortunately it's part of the thing," Goldberg replied.

"You're a dog lover. For a lot of people dogs are sport," she added.

Behar continued to shake her head in disgust.

Goldberg said it seemed to her that it took a while for Vick to realize that the charges against him were serious.

"It seemed like a light went off in his head when he realized that this was something the entire country really didn't appreciated, didn't like," Goldberg said, referring to Vick's guilty plea.

She said if the case had involved somebody from New York City her feelings would have been different.

Goldberg pointed out that Vick was raised in the South.

"This is part of his cultural upbringing," said Goldberg.

Co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck said she was encouraged by the NFL suspending Vick indefinitely.

But Goldberg continued to defend Vick saying "This is a kid who comes from a culture when this is not questioned."
So if I'm a white supremecist, I can just say that I come from a culture where that's not questioned and Whoopi would be okay with it?

Some of these people just need to keep their feelings on Vick to themselves if this is the kind of "support" they're going to come up with.

This was a person deemed to have "earned" a prominent role as a talk show host? Exactly how is the fact that cockfighting is acceptable in some portions of the world supposed to justify dogfighting? Dickson's comment is right on: so long as someone is culturally acceptable, anywhere, we should be tolerant of it. That's brilliant. Good to see that New Yorkers are held to a higher standard.

Are we starting to see pattern in terms of those who are coming out in support of Michael Vick and/or who don't think there isn't much wrong with dogfighting (other than their stupidity)?
Not that I'm defending her, but it is The View. Whoopi has been brought in to fill the role that Star Jones and Rosie O'Donnel once occupied. It's probably in her contract that she has to say stupid shit on a regular basis.
Is there something in the contract at The View that says the fourth personality has to have the craziest opinions of the lot?

EDIT: Amphibatron beat me to it.
Yeah,it is so fucking obvious that NBC is trying to stir up a liitle controversy.
But the question is can Whoopie skate right up to the edge without going over it. Rosie could not,and went over the edge with the crackpot 9/11 Conspiracy crap. It is a situation stiring up a certain amount of controversy, but not enough to make advertisers nervous, and alienating audiences.

Awesome. Vick caught smoking dope by the court:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3037175

This gets better and better. Let's see...I'm awaiting trial on a felony and get busted for doing drugs. I bet this pisses off the judge who makes the sentencing guideline just a wee bit.
Didn't see anyone else mention it but the Royal Bank of Canada is suing Vick for $2.3 million U.S.: http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20070...vick_lawsuit_3

I think we have the idiot of the year here, folks.
Forget how you feel about durg laws, using drugs when you are awaiting sentencing on a felony rap and under close scrunity is material for an honorary Darwin Award for sheer stupidity.
Michael Vick, the story that just keeps giving and giving.....

Wonder what Whoopi will come up with to explain away this one, it obviously won't be Vick's fault. He was probably just hanging with his best pals from grade school, who were all smoking dope, and got some second hand. Totally not Vick's fault at all.
Well I think it's safe to say that what little chance he still had at a NFL career just went up in smoke.

Seriously....Forget idiot of the year......This guy wins the biggest idiot in the universe award.

I'm really enjoying watching a sports media that spent six years sucking Vick's cock having to acknowledge him as a total moron and complete fuckup.

He will be a penniless hobo when he gets out of jail, but Arthur Blank will give him a job cleaning up the luxury boxes after the games.

Shit.....He'll be lucky if Blank gives him a job cleaning out the toliets at the atlanta Home Depot.

He will be playing in Las Vegas for Mark Cuban's United Football League franchise.

Bet on it.

I can't find the link, but Vick is also sued for about two million by a Canadian bank that loaned him cash for real estate development (...Bad Newz Kennelz franchises?)

And now another bank (this one from Indiana) is seeking at least 2 million in damages.
