August 21st Is Gonna Fuck My Wallet

Yep, another one of those threads. Here's what's been announced so far:

Dexter: Season 1
Robocop: Special Edition (for us poor suckers that never got our hands on the Criterion Collection)
Serenity: Special Edition
House: Season 3

Serious question: Why buy a show like HOUSE on DVD? Isn't it mainly stand-alone stories and isn't it a show that's already getting replayed/syndicated (my TiVo thinks so)? I totally get buying a show with big story arcs, but I don't buy a LAW & ORDER either, and for the same reasons - shit's on all the time and I can watch it in any order.
The only good reason for getting HOUSE on DVD is for the picture quality and the fact it's presented in widescreen on the discs.

Other than that I'd just rather TiVo it myself. Good to have on hand when there is nothing else to watch.
Does anyone know what's on this new ROBOCOP DVD that wasn't on the one released with the trilogy box set 3 years ago?
Jason brings up a good point in regards to House, that Fox doesn't show the episodes in widescreen and it's often times quite noticable. It's a minor gripe, but if you're a fan of the show, one worth buying the DVD for. I, personally, have bought or watched House on DVD because I sometimes miss episodes in a particular season and I don't have TiVo. Also, because I like to watch the show on my own time and schedule without having to wait around for a rerun.

And it won't go into syndication for at least another couple seasons.

Reruns on USA and the Fox affiliate disagree strongly with you.
House is in syndication. I get my episodes from USA on a weekly basis.
I've seen House on USA in widescreen a couple times, not lately though.
Actually, House fails the ultimate DVD test for me - I once watched a mini-marathon, like 3 or 4 episodes, and by the end of it the formula of the show was so obvious that it was killing me. Personally I watch TV on DVD in big chunks, so formula shows like House just become glaring.
Good point, Devin.

When I reviewed the first season of HOUSE on DVD is was really painful to sit through because the formula simply never changes.

I prefer it in shorter runs myself.
I mean is it just the same unrated ROBOCOP disc in a new flashy "20th Anniversary" box, or what?
I think the only time there was a change of formula was in a recent episode, where they didn't know what happened to a woman and she died. Next episode it was back to the same formula. Though I will probably be picking up Dexter, I'm about half way through the first book, and I've heard great things about the show.
It's too damn hot at work and I'm too tired to argue this, but I think there's a difference between what you guys are describing as syndication and the syndication that happens after a show hits 100 episodes. Universal produces House, which also owns USA, so House airs there and the Fox afilliates without a problem. I was thinking of the kind of syndication that would happen when House is sold to another network besides those two for a lot of money, which doesn't usually happen after 100 episodes. (And, of course, there are exceptions.)

As for House on DVD, this is going to sound really trite, but the formula is one of the reasons I like watching the show on DVD -- I like being able to watch a bunch of episodes while I'm doing other things. (It's why I watched Law & Order SVU a ton when it was on USA.)

The show is pretty forumulaic, true, but I think there have been enough arcs in its history to keep the show relatively engaging -- and really, I'd just like to have it on DVD for Laurie's performance. It's not "the best show on TV," but it can be very good.
I like House, I think Hugh Laurie is great on it, I'm still waiting for that Stephen Fry guest spot. But, I don't think there's a point in getting the show on DVD.
True, syndication may not be the right term, but older episodes are easily available outside of FOX showing the episodes every week.

I don't mind the formula, I just can't take it in consecutitive viewings. Laurie's performance is the main reason I still watch the show, actually.

It's new special features spread across 2 discs. A DTS track on the theatrical cut (Disc 1) and the X cut on Disc 2.

A step up from the previous MGM release, but I'll still keep my Criterion disc.
Thanks. Not sure if I'll double dip or not. I'll have to wait and see how extensive the new special features are.

That sounds pretty classy, and it's much better value for money that the last set, where they insisted on packaging RoboCop with those two decorative RoboCop coasters.
I could have sworn there was only one coaster in mine. One truly awful coaster.
I have the press release, but I'm not sure if I post the link that you can see it.

Here's what DVDactive has on the new disc:

MGM Home Entertainment has sent over details on a 20th Anniversary Edition of Robocop which stars Peter Weller, Kurtwood Smith, and Ronny Cox. The two-disc special edition will be available to own from the 21st August, and should retail at around $22.98. The set will include both the theatrical and extended cuts (presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with DTS 5.1 Surround tracks), along with commentary by director Paul Verhoven, writer Ed Neumeier and executive producer Jon Davison, a Flesh And Steel: The Making Of Robocop featurette, a Shooting Robocop 1987 featurette, a Making Robocop 1987 featurette, The Boardroom: Storyboard With Commentary By Animator Phil Tippet featurette, deleted scenes, an OCP Press Conference feature, a Nun In The Street Interview, and further featurettes on the cast, special effects, and design. Completing the set will be a Villains Of Old Detroit featurette, a Special Effects: Then And Now featurette, a Robocop: Creating A Legend featurette, and trailers and TV spots.
See, it's the shows with long story arcs that I watch on DVD. HOUSE is simple single bites that I can appreciate. With long story arc shows, I prefer to have the whole season at hand to be able to devour.
I guess I'll get around to double-dipping Robocop this time. I already own the Criterion(and I'm sure I'll keep it), but the transfer needs serious upgrading. They almost got my money for the trilogy, but I held out. All things considered, it was a good price, but I don't even want Robocop 3 in my collection and I'm in no rush to watch Robocop 2 again(even though it has it's moments).
"Go fuck a refrigerator, peckerneck!"
It's the two weeks before that that will bust my wallet - Simpsons Season 10, The Tick Season Two, Muppet Show Season Two, and Flash Gordon (though I'm not sure I'll buy that; I have the old DVD and the Region 2 one).
I'm all about this new RoboCop release.

It doesn't have big story arcs but it does have character arcs; it's more in line with Law & Order: SVU than the main L&O.
Yeah, but one of the most irritating things about House is no matter what the story arc, the status quo will almost always be resolved at the end of it. It's like they're afraid to explore the other possiblities of this character, and that's one of the reasons why I have found the third season to be so enormously frustrating. Both the leg cure and the Tritter arc could have taken House to new, compelling places without compromising his asshole/misanthropic nature, and they just seemed content to hit the reset button not once, but twice. At the end of the Tritter arc, I wanted to scream -- it was such a bullshit cop-out. Shore is good at the episodes that play around with time and reveal more about House, but I wish they'd get away from this idea of "House will never change, we'll just learn more about him" and maybe take this character towards a different place.

Ditto. Robocop II is very underrated. Is it as good as the classic original? Of course not. It is a solid sequel nonetheless though.
It has a lot of flaws but there's enough good stuff, from the failed attempts at creating the new Robocop to the huge battle with Kain, that I look upon it favorably.

Come on Molt, don't you ever read me ???
I'll be picking up Murphy & Co. The only copy I've got is the original snapper-case copy that I got as one of my free DVDs that came with my very first DVD player. I missed out on the Criterion issue at the time, so I'll grab this one when it's released.

Yeah, when I was talking about "character arcs" I was referring to the supporting cast. With the character of House, they clearly have no balls because as they see it "If ain't broke, don't fix it. Don't even touch it. Don't look directly at it. Please God, let us stay a hit."
I'll agree with that -- I suppose you could argue that the show is not about how House changes, but how he changes the people around him. Cameron and Foreman both have grown and changed a lot, Chase has started to a little, and even Wilson and Cuddy have had their own stories.
Robocop 2 is pretty much the breaking point for mass appeal, superviolent action pictures. Considering there were ten year olds in the audience holding on to their Robo action figures as he smashed Kain's BRAIN against the sidewalk, I don't think there's anywhere to go but down.

Serious question: Why would you want to buy Serenity? Ever?
I liked SERENITY but I wouldn't buy it. It's going to play on cable forfuckinever.
The Criterion "Rodocop" was the second DVD I ever bought. I paid like $50 to see the uncut version, like 10 seconds extra or something. Aside from the status of owning this disc, it was a total waste of money. I would trade it straight across for this new version in a second.

I own the original release of "Serenity", and am happy with that one. I would rather put the money towards buying "Firefly" the series.

Because I like it. Bizarre answer, I know.

Also, new fuckery: HOUSE OF GAMES - CRITERION COLLECTION.

On August 21st. I love Criterion. I hate Criterion. Love more than hate, but in the immortal words of GOB Bluth: C'mon!
