I like how they change the "we're sending you a refurb" policy right AFTER they send me a shitty piece of shit.

Also, were I an amusing black gentleman, this would have been me yesterday morning.
I don't think I'll be buying the next Xbox, not after the shit I've been through with these cocksuckers. But gddamn does microsoft seem to be on the ball with getting developers to put there games on MS's system. It kills me.

It's not back yet, but Sony and Immersion settled the score and are friendly again, so it will be. Latest rumors I've read were saying the rumble sixaxis should be out around November.

Man, corporations must LOVE video game consumers.

4 X-Boxes in 2 months? The original guy had his break how many times? And you still keep paying money to get more crap replacements?

What other type of consumer but a meth addict will put up with an industry like this? And as long as we have you guys begging for more punishment, there's no incentive for these corporations to clean up their act at all.

Thanks!!!

There's a year warranty on the 360 for free repairs, and we're only a year and six months out from launch. So what you're seeing is primarily refurbs issued under that warranty. I can't think of anyone on these boards that has paid actual money more than once.

Otis, did you have you raise hell to get that new unit replacement? I'm hoping that Microsoft has instituted a new policy regarding excessive refurbs.

Nope. I actually didn't know I had a real problem until I called. My controllers stopped linking up to the 360 (but the system still works fine, the controllers will even turn it on), I just called to see if there was some way to reset the contollers or something. They said it was a system failure, saw that this would be my 3rd send in, and told me they would make sure I got a new unit this time. Right before I ended the call they said a tech manager would be calling me to confirm my new unit and to discuss other compensation.
Well, I just got the call from tech guy, and he did nothing but tell me the first guy was wrong and I will not be getting a new system. Just another repair/refurb. I guess you need to have 4 FUCKING CRASHES before you qualify for a new unit, and even then it's not a sure thing. I think I may be getting a free game or some other shit I don't really want.
That's bullshit. They shouldn't be replacing them with refurbished systems in the first place, in my opinion.
I definitely agree with that. Either they should get their refurb center up to snuff or stop sending us on a merrygoround of repairs. It's not like they're saving money after all the shipping charges and man-hours involved.

I'm not out any money, other than the little bit of gas money to get a replacement unit at the store I guess. The frustration and time wasted is the bigger problem.

I realized this morning if Microsoft hadn't forced this next generation on us so soon there probably wouldn't be these problems in the first place.
One of my nephews got a 360 this weekend. It's going to be very interesting to see how it holds up considering how his younger brothers have a way of destroying things a lot tougher then the 360. Which is a category that at this point includes wet kleenex.
When the 3rd replacement fails, they should send you your money back and another console (refurbished or not) with no warranty. It's completely unnaceptable to send consumers so many broken products.

Didn't Sony get sued for the disc read error crap? I'm hoping another lawsuit arises from this, or these companies are never going to learn.
MS probably thought they'd save money by cutting a corner here and another one over there when making the 360, but it's probably costing them a lot more when they have to keep replacing busted units, to say nothing of the ill-will that's being created.
Yeah, but what happens when the warranty runs out and the consoles die again? (...and they will.)

Are people going to suddenly throw up their hands and go, "That's it Microsoft! That's the last straw!" and toss their 360s away in righteous indignation?

(Three guesses and the first two don't count.)
I had to go through four of them before they agreed to give me a new console. Then they sent me the same refurb back and it hadn't even been worked on. So then I called up and they finally got me a new one and hooked me up with a couple free wireless pads, Gears of War and 3 months of Live. Not too shabby but going through 4 repairs was a major waste of time.

I tried building an X-Box 360 but it blew up my trailer.

Doubtful. I imagine it was a well calculated plan.
Here's a pretty good article about this situation.
admittedly I don't play my 360 as much as some people on these boards, but I've had mine for over a year and my only problem was having one or two freezes when playing Viva Pinata. I'll see how it handles my non stop play sessions when Blue Dragon comes out.

Also Costco's return policy is still awesome when it comes to game consoles. just remember to keep the box and return it with the extra controller and game it came packaged with.

My shipping box finally arrived, but my promised callback never occurred, so I called Microsoft again this morning. Turns out I am still mysteriously under warranty(!), so I'm not being charged, and I'm *supposed* to get a new console instead of a refurb(!!).

I'm cautiously optimistic. If it ever reaches the point where I have to pay for a repair though, upon reflection, I think I'm done with the 360.
Well, hey there, Mr. Red Lights. What's that? You want me to pay $150 for the privilege of trading in my console for a previously-busted piece of refurbished shit? Well, go right ahead, I guess. It's not like I was playing the last week of the Halo 3 beta or anything.

I knew nine other people who scored their systems at the same Microsoft 360 Launch Party I attended. As of right now, all ten of those systems are now broken. Three percent failure rate my cunt.
A small light at the end of the tunnel..my brother who had to trade his in for a second time within a month span got a new unit instead of a refurb, and quite a bit faster on the turnaround.

Slater, I think if you would have bought the halo 2 maps, that wouldn't have happened.

otis, how did you get a system back so quickly? Did you send blowie coupons to Peter Moore or something? And did they send you a shitty refurb or a new system?

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Slater again."

"We'd like to apologize for your inconvenience, Mr. Slater. To make it up to you, we'll be including a free month of Xbox Live."

"Wow, that's like a four dollar value. That totally makes up for everything. Hey, could you maybe throw in Halo 3 instead?"

"Halo 3?"

"Yeah. Finish the fight!"

"...You mean the game?"

"No, just the empty box. I hate games."

"...I don't think I can do that, sir."

"Okay, you can send it with the game, I guess. I can throw away the disc myself."

"...Is there anything else I can help you with today, Mr. Slater?"

That sounds like a CAD strip.

That was at turns uproariously funny and Cronenbergian frightening.

I've been sitting on a $150 EB card for awhile, and had a bunch of trade in crap, so I just bought a new Core unit and warranty. I'm burning myself, but at least for the next year I can just trade my system back into EB when it breaks. I was going to sell off the refurb when it arrived, but I think I'll just hold onto it for a while. It should be worth a couple hundred toward a PS3 at some point.

Obviously, I pussed out and will continue shoveling cash into my 360 for the time being. The games right now are just to damn good. When PS3 hits its stride next year, things will probably be different.

Mass Effect looks great, but BioShock has me the most interested at the moment.

I had a version of this thought when my refurb (8/06 mfr date, and obviously not the new console I was told I would get) showed up yesterday with a 1-month card. If anyone wants the code, PM me and it's yours, gratis.

On the bright side, the unit they sent seems to have the quieter disc drive for the first time, though the ominous, scratchy whine of the cooling fans is just different, not better or softer.
Funny my third one had a letter saying there was a card, but low-and-behold, no card. Made the entire experience that much more laughable.

The unit I just sent back was the most quiet one I've had yet. It lasted a month and a half.

In a few months, Otis, when you look back at this byzantine oddyssey, you'll laugh and laugh. And play Bioshock.

Man I can actually here the Xbox "support" personnel carrying out that exact conversation. I'm sorry your box crapped out but thank you for the laugh.

I used to scoff in the general direction of folks whose 360s took the Red Ring plunge. Haha, suckers...

Until I downloaded the spring update and my happy ring of light turned into the angry eye of Sauron's asshole.

Now I'm out a 360 and feeling about as much desire to pay for repairs/a new one as I do for a heel to the pelvis. XBOX 360- why you gotta treat us so wrong?

As I mentioned earlier, I'm still sitting on the fence about buying a 360. I'm curious about those add on coolers. Has anyone on here used one of those add on fans?

Anyone whose did or didn't die after getting an add on cooler? Thoughts?

Never tried one, but nothing I've read indicates they do much of anything at all.

Yeah I have one and it works fine i have never had a problem with mine, my friend has had all kind of problems with has but the genius had it sitting on the carpet and if any of you know anything about computers you know carpet static and game systems don't mix, anyway i try to keep mind as cool as possible and i keep it away from the rest of my entertainment system(a trick I learned from a friend).
Thanks for replying Blue, I never heard of issues with carpet static. Which cooler do you have?
I can't find a picture of it but mine has the two slots in the side to recharge your battery pak for both controllers and it came with a game shark, which I still havent used, it onlly cost my $19.99 at best buy me and my friend bought it.
The carpet static thing I got from experience with my desktop and laptop, and that is really if your opening them up, which I don't think many people are, but better safe then sorry. My 360 acctually sits on its on little table that I had got for something else.
I had the Intercooler for a day. While a great concept, it was more of a pain in the ass than anything else. YMMV.
here it is the 4 in 1 cooler
Its by MadCatz, and correction it has only one slot to charge your battery pack.
the only thing is some of those coolers can be very loud so you better have a good system to drown them out, or a head phone jack on your tv, one of my friends has one in his office and when we're goofing off in there playing video games(when we should be working) it can sometimes feel like I'm at the airport waiting to take off.
My 360 just got the 3 red lights. The real kicker is that the warranty only ran out yesterday. I thought people were joking about having a chip inside that melts after exactly a year, but now I'm starting to wonder...

I'm going to contact MS tomorrow though, one of my friends said that they're a little lenient with warranty times, I hope thats true.

How much does it cost for a new/repaired one if I'm out of luck?
$150ish
