Thirty years ago today...you sombitches.

There was no Dom DeLuise.

There were no pregnant elephants.

Smokey was not the Bandit, nor was Jerry Reed.

And nothing was ever going to be the same.

No matter what Universal may have done with the legacy, I'll still never forget the first time I saw it.

Happy birthday to Smokey and the Bandit.

If things go well, I'll be celebrating this great moment in cinema history later in the summer:

The Event:
The night before the Texarkana Drive-in screening of Smokey and the Bandit, we will be hosting a triple feature of Burt Reynolds classics at the Starlight Drive-in in Atlanta. Adventurous members of that crowd will meet at 8AM at the drive-in for a cross-country "Smokey and the Bandit" themed scavenger hunt, recreating the epic journey depicted in the film. Check out the description from Burt-athon 2007 for more information about the hunt.

The scavenger hunt teams from Atlanta will join the rest of us at the Four State Fair in Texarkana where we will have a temporary drive-in constructed, complete with FM transmitter so you can listen to the movie soundtrack on your car radio.

We'll have a semi-truck full of Coors and a huge barrage of action-packed Burt Reynolds trailers before the film. Check back here for more details on the screening and the scavenger hunt.

I love this movie, without any shame whatsoever. It has one of my favorite scenes in ANY movie: early on, when Burt is driving the Trans Am at night, he coasts by the camera...looks at it and smiles, breaking the 4th wall. It's just so...PERFECT.

If I could be at that screening, I would. As it is, I'll drink a can of Coors for you.

Has it really been that long? Time flies...like a Trans-Am over a river.

Holy shit! I was just thinking - "What a hilarious ruse Russ has concocted here." - only to find out... it's actually for real!

Burt-a-thon 2007.

I'd like to check out WHITE LIGHTNING. I don't understand the praise SHARKEY'S MACHINE gets among his filmography. I only saw it once long ago but it just came off as Reynolds trying way too hard to be Eastwood.

Ah yes, Uth, the picture that most likely cost Burt Reynolds an Oscar nomination for Deliverance, if you believe the stories.

I may have to rent Smokey just so I can see it without Jackie Gleason sounding like Fred Flintstone for two hours.

That makes two of us. Hell, I even liked The End more than SHARKEY, and that did have Dom! But as far as the Burt-a-thon in Atl goes, I bet they're showing it simply because it was filmed there.

I've never even heard that one before, sounds very plausable though. He was great in Deliverance, and I think he should've won it had he been given the nom. Poor Burt's never received the level of respect he truly deserves as far as awards go, but at least he gets it in spades from his fans.

He turned down the James Franciscus role in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. (And Orson Welles turned down the role of General Ursus. That flick would have been incredible.)

I've heard revisionist stuff about Sharkey's Machine. Anyone whose opinion I respect (Stew, Greg David, Litmus) want to chime in? I almost blind-bought it the other day for $6.

Sad thing is, my dad actually has TWO Trans Am Firebirds*, but they're in central TX and there's no way I'd be able to get one in time for the event. At least my friend who entered us in the scavenger hunt has a Pontiac Grand Prix.

*He's not a total redneck; he and a friend restore old muscle cars.

It's worth $6. That's it. Burt gets a little to arty while still trying to make a gritty cop thriller.

The villain Henry Silva is fantastic and Burt is great, especially during his torture scene. A good film, nothing more.

If you are a Burt whore, grab it.

Amen. I do not trust anyone that dislikes this movie.
