Hah... they were marketing this as a "psychological action thriller".

Worst of all, it’s a Van Damme who really doesn’t seem to care about the craft anymore, and it really shows. It’s almost like the fire that once existed inside of him has died, and he veritably sleepwalks through the entire film as if he was only in it for the paycheck. Such a shame.
He's playing a heroin addicted cop who winds up in a coma. It's not the type of role that calls for him to be a high-kicking dynamo.

I can see how some might want a quicker pace to this one, but Van Damme is not sleepwalking here.

How did I know that Moltisanti would be the first one to respond to this review?

I actually almost started off the review with an apology to you, Molt.

I guess I was just disappointed with the movie (not that I was expecting a whole hell of a lot to begin with), as I expected some of the old Van Damme magic and just didn't get it. I stand by my statement, though, as it felt like Van Damme was on cruise control the entire time. Oh, and it was pretty much laughable watching him try to act.

A lot of the points you bring up are valid, especially when it comes to Stephen Rea (fairly lame final confrontation between Van Damme and Rea). It's a DTV action film and that's a tough genre to ask an audience to give some time for a character to develop. But Van Damme sold me with this one, granted I'm a fan of the guy and want to like his movies, but he has had a fair share of flicks where he has been on auto-pilot. I did not find this to be one of them.

If you're looking for a return to the days of LIONHEART and DOUBLE IMPACT then his next flick, THE SHEPHERD, appears to be more in line with those flicks of old.

I'm curious why this would be a Creature Corner review.

Anyway, I don't agree that Van Damme phoned in his performance. It's one of his more solid efforts frankly, especially in recent years. Of course he's much more entertaining as the scumbag.

One couldn't really say it's a genuinely good film, but well above average in the land of DTV.

One does miss the Van Dammage, but I think you have to accept he was out to make a different kind of film. And it's nice to see a bit of adventurousness after digesting the latest Seagal autopilot vehicle.

I'm still trying to figure that out myself, but it was in the list of DVDs that Alex gave me and there was no way I was gonna pass up a chance to review a Van Damme flick.

Like I said, I stand by my statement. It felt like Van Damme really wanted to do something different, but in the end, his heart just wasn't in it.
