The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

I guess Devin will be making a pilgrimage to Orlando in a few years....

Universal Orlando has secured rights to the phenomenally successful Harry Potter stories and will build a themed area of rides, shops and restaurants called "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter" at Islands of Adventure.

Universal, author J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. Studios, which makes the Harry Potter movies, are making a worldwide announcement of the deal today. Universal expects to break ground late this summer and have "Wizarding World" open by late 2009....

... Universal plans a 20-acre "Wizarding World," a little bigger than the average size of its themed "islands" at Islands of Adventure. Part would be carved away from what is now "The Lost Continent" island, and the rest would be land now used for employee parking and park support, outside the back fence.

The new, "seventh island" would feature reconstructed and rethemed attractions, and all-new ones, Scott Trowbridge, vice president of Universal's Creative Studios, said in an interview. The Hogwarts castle and locations from Rowling's Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade village will be created as backdrops to attractions, shops and restaurants.

Three-time Academy Award-winning production designer Stuart Craig, who designed sets for all the Harry Potter movies, leads the "Wizarding World" design team.

Much of "The Lost Continent" island, including Universal's award-winning Mythos Restaurant, will be retained as a separate themed area, just smaller. The island is to remain open during construction as well.

Some current "Lost Continent" attractions such as The Dueling Dragons roller coasters and The Flying Unicorn coaster ride likely would be adapted to fit the Harry Potter story. Trowbridge would not discuss specific attractions, but did say that Universal intended to "leverage some existing infrastructure." He said that would have to include far more than a new paint job and a new sign, because too much is at stake.
Next to the Simpsons ride, this has been the worst-kept secret in Orlando -- rumors have been swirling around since late last year. You have to wonder how big Potter will remain over the next couple of years, what with the final book in July and only two more movies remaining after Order of the Phoenix this year. Then again, the Half-Blood Prince movie should be ready to go right around the time this rehab opens, so that'll help. And if you ask me, Harry Potter has become enough of a franchise to last beyond new product coming out -- new generations of kids are going to keep discovering it.

This should be a fun island. I love the Marvel and Jurassic Park islands while the rest are just filler, although Lost Continent does have some cool scenery.

Dickson, as an Orlando resident how often do you make it to all the theme parks? It's the wife and I's favorite vacation spot when we can get there and I always wondered how the life there is. I think it would be fun to get an annual pass and be able to ride Spider Man once a week.

I work for Universal, so getting in isn't an issue. It's wanting to. You work there all day, the last thing you want to do is spend your free time there, although I do go for some of the Mardi Gras concerts and Halloween.

We have an annual pass to Disney that we've used the hell out of this year. Hit Animal Kingdom early while the animals are still up and about, head over to the Magic Kingdom for a few rides, hit Star Tours at MGM, then pick a country for dinner at EPCOT. A nice full day.

Universal employees also get into Sea World and Busch Gardens for free, so we hit those occasionally too.

It's good to be The Dickson.

I wonder if you'll have to punch your way through a horde of fundy protesters to get to the main gate.

The lines are gonna be full of middle-aged dudes saying stuff like, "Everyone thinks these Potter rides are meant for children but I find them to be sophisticated enough for adults to enjoy as well. HEY THAT KID UP THERE IS CUTTING, LET'S PANTS THAT FUCKER!"

I'm surprised there's no plans for costumed characters (that was mentioned in the article I saw the news in), but I also read that Rowling's working close with the designers for athenticity.

What do they do for Halloween in Orlando? I went to the Halloween Horrors Night here in LA last year, and it was incredibly lame.

They do things a little more elaborately for the Orlando HHN. At least one and sometimes part or all of the second park are open and there's usually about seven haunted houses, four or five "scare zones", and Halloween themed shows going on. They used to have some pretty decent concerts before they shifted them over to the Mardi Gras event -- one year I saw Joan Jett, the Smithereens, and Jerry Lee Lewis on consecutive weekends. And the entire event is monstrously crowded except on the first couple of nights.

I took my daughter to Sea World (year passes) and walked around to the candy stations as obnoxious parents and their obnoxious kids of all ages trampled on my 2-year old for some measly Twizzlers. Douchebags.
