It's easier to post in threads like these for people who aren't regular posters like me. Often times, when I get to a thread about a film, it's already 3 pages long. At that point, I would have nothing to add except my appreciation of the film.

Not posting in a thread doesn't mean the user doesn't read it. For example, I just saw The Prestige last night so I went and read the post-release thread about it and gained some really cool insight. I didn't post any comment in it.

Because if I don't feel I have something important to add to a thread, I'd rather just drop a rep comment. But, if I'm just cluttering up a person's User CP, maybe it's best not to bother at all?

True about the PMs, but PMs always have an aura of... expecting a response, to me (and maybe that's just me). The rep thing is just a quick burst of emotion or affirmation. Just feels different.
