TB guy knew he had drug-resistant TB before getting on the plane, travelled anyway

Quote:
The man infected with potentially fatal tuberculosis is receiving treatment at a Denver, Colorado, hospital as federal health officials continue to track down airline passengers who may have been exposed to the illness.

The man has been identified by multiple medical and law enforcement sources as Andrew Speaker, 31, a lawyer from Atlanta, Georgia.

Speaker's father-in-law works for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, an agency spokesman said Thursday.

The father-in-law, Robert C. Cooksey, is a microbiologist who has conducted research on tuberculosis for the National Center for Infectious Diseases, according to a CDC biography posted on the agency's Web site.
...
Speaker was in Europe for his wedding and honeymoon at the time his XDR TB was diagnosed, although he was aware before the trip that he had a form of drug-resistant TB.

Health officials said they advised him not to travel, but they had no authority to prevent him from doing so.
...
Speaker, who was not identified by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, told the newspaper he was aware he was placed on a no-fly list in the United States after his diagnosis with XDR TB, which is why he decided not to fly into a U.S. airport.
This guy is a dickhead for a number of reasons:

1. One of his relatives works the with disease on a regular basis, therefore one can conclude he knew about the risks of the disease.

2. He had a stupid fucking "destination wedding".

3. He was diagnosed PRIOR to leaving.

4. He structured his flights in a way to avoid authorities he knew would prevent him from boarding a plane and endangering a number of unsuspecting passengers.

What the hell is wrong with this guy?

I don't know about you and perhaps this is irrational but I seriously think the guy should be brought up on charges.

But if anything a few lawsuits are going to filed over this.

But even then my other question is how the fuck is it possible to go to law school, pass the bar exam and yet not trust your doctor's advice or know that tb is FUCKING CONTAGIOUS?!

I was going to call this "Another Reason to Hate Lawyers." I guess his reservation at Sandals: Prague was non-refundable.

To answer your question, he's a personal injury/divorce lawyer, enough said.

On the upside, "potentially fatal".

That would be the father-in-law, apparently:

In a strange twist, Speaker's father-in-law, Bob Cooksey, is a CDC microbiologist specializing in the spread of TB and other bacteria. He said only that he gave Speaker "fatherly advice" when he learned the young man had contracted the disease.

And here he is with his lucky bride, the AFLAC duck.

If this is the case, then if we see this man:

We must notify the authorities immediately!

I didn't realize destination weddings were a sin.

Yes, its the commandment between "Thou shalt not steal" and "Thou shalt not be gay."

I hear he's going to represent the other passengers in a lawsuit against the airline for not providing proper health safeguards.

Like the CDC would do anything. I've worked for the CDC and the ones I've met from Atlanta are dumber than a box of shit.

I hope he doesn't die from TB. I hope he gets AIDS.

You mean movies like Outbreak where they spring fearlessly into action don't quite represent reality?

There's so much red tape to go through working with the government. I spent most of my time here on CHUD because of the lack of work.

If you're a lazy fuck that doesn't like to earn his money, don't work in the private sector. They expect results.*

*Vague-ish movie reference if anyone's game.

A friend of mine works a government job, and says exactly the same thing. He spends most of his time at work e-mailing and trying to figure out various ways of circumventing blocks against looking up naked women on his computer system.
