The Frighteners - Director's Cut

I think I prefer the original, but the director's cut isn't that different, so its hard to decide. I can see what Beaks is saying about narrative economy. A lot of the added scenes are in the beginning and you're waiting longer in this cut to get to the really good stuff. On the other hand, maybe I'm just not used to the extra footage, since its inclusion is subtle. And I do like the new scenes for how they add weight to the characters. More Jeffery Combs!

The transfer looks great, and the effects seemed cleaned up. I sold my old copy to get this new one, so I can't do the geeky side-by-side comparison. Maybe I'll check out the extras at some point. Cool 2-sided DVD. How green.

I vastly prefer the shorter version, but the doc(it's longer than the film as I recall) and commentary are great. Too bad they couldn't do some seamless branching or something.
I hate flipper discs, but it's worth it just to see the longer cut and extras.

Ideally, I would like both versions, but this'll do for now. I should've copied my old disc before selling it.

I don't like flipper discs because there's no 'safe' side. Its all data and exposed surfaces. And they're usually in service of those widescreen/fullscreen combos (boo!) But it is less packaging and DVD materials, and that eases my liberal guilt.

Isn't there a foreign edition that has like 4 discs?

Yeah, it's region 2 I think. The only difference as far as I know(other than the disc quantity) is that it has both cuts of the movie.
I guess the image quality may be better as well.

The UK Version has 3 Discs, but only includes the Director's Cut. To be honest I've seen the Director's cut so many times now (I used getting the DVD as an excuse to induct most of my friends into the show) that I honestly couldn't tell you where there was added material. It still ranks as my second favourite Jackson film though, only a little behind Braindead.

There is a 4-disc version over in Germany with Disc 1 having the theatrical cut, 2-3 are the documentary and 4 having the director's cut.

I don't actually know which one I prefer, it's been ages since I saw the theatrical cut. But it's a kick ass movie in any shape...

I got the special edition for Christmas last year, but hadn't seen the original since it first ran in the movies. Is anybody willing to give me a breakdown of the differences between the director's cut and the theater version?

Parenthetically, it's a really, really fun movie. I wasn't a fan when I first saw it, but I attribute that to the fact that my youthful self expected more of a lighthearted romp akin to Back to the Future (Starring Michael J. Fox and Produced by Robert Zemeckis). It's certainly grown on me over the years, though. Heck, it's worth it for the Judge alone. And, yes, Combs is priceless.
