The
only numbers I could find on England say that more British men than women are internet users. Unfortunately, the numbers are three years old. They might as well be a hundred.
I was able to find some other, slightly more recent stats for other countries, though. Generally speaking, in other countries, it would appear that men still slightly edge out women, but I really couldn't find anything both comprehensive and very recent. Odd.
I think it's less a matter of sheer numbers, though, esp. since the difference in the number of male and female internet users seems to be so small in most cases. What I find more compelling is the difference in the ways in which men and women are present online. Women in western (and many, many other societies) have historically had a complex relationship with public space and what is and isn't permissable for them there. Since the internet is just another one of those "spaces," it's interesting to watch how some of the same things one sees play out in physical existance manifest themselves online.
