About 300 people turned out for a 2005 secession convention in the Statehouse, and plans for a second one are in the works. A poll this year by the University of Vermont's Center for Rural Studies found that 13 percent of those surveyed support secession, up from 8 percent a year before.
Seems like you have to register for the whole article, but you get the idea.
Anyways, 13% is actually quite a big number. It's all extremely unlikely of course.

Isn't Vermont already a part of Canada?

No, just laid back.

Doesn't some religious sect or other try this once in a while? Make plans to fence off a chunk of a state no one is using or something?

They go, we tariff the hell out of their maple syrup. Choke on it.

I don't think it's possible to choke on syrup.

What, you've never seen Super Troopers? You can at least gag on it.

In the UK you can declare your own county. I'm thinking Vinqushire, or maybe Vinquistan. Like a dry county, only the opposite.

We should let them go and make Puerto Rico a state, and then we don't have to change the flag. Win-win!

Ever since they got a little taste of independence with the Green Mountain Boys they've been quietly wishing they were still off by themselves, almost like a married guy who just loves throwing his buddies their bachelor parties.

How do the people of the Spursbury Police Department respond to this?

I am a terrible human being for laughing out loud at the phrase "Boston Molasses Disaster" and for continuing to laugh after I followed the link.

That would make an awesome disaster-spoof movie, except it wouldn't be a spoof.

Death by molasses. I'm not sure how to qualify this as a syrup. It's way too thick. In any case, I wouldn't want to clean this after. It took me hours to clean my teeth after having a single candy.

I'd take magma over molasses anyday.

I think that would be the best part. Playing it up as a spoof and then, at the end, revealing that it was a true story. You could give the audience PTSD.

There has GOT to be a band somewhere named Boston Molasses Disaster. There just has to be.
