Wizard of Gore

Here's the type of remake I like to see. Take a plotless original that was gory fun and turn it into an actual film. Have it star Crispin Glover basically playing himself, add in Brad Dourif fresh off of his great run in Deadwood, and pepper it with hot goth chicks from Suicide Girls.

The trailer looks great:

Is Crispin Glover playing himself or is he playing Jim Carrey?

Stay Far Away.

I just got back from what was apparently the premiere. I went to see this based only on the cast.....Crispin Glover, Brad Dourif, and JEFFREY FUCKING COMBS. I hadn't imagined it could be bad, let alone a waste of money and time.

Imagine a porn film. This porn film has all the typical production values and acting talent you would come to expect, and yet all the sex scenes are missing. Instead of sex we get glimpses of actual entertainment from real actors, which creates a feeling that's similar to watching porn; the awful bits of talking and plot serve only to stitch together the hot Crispin Glover hamming.

As for the real actors, Glover is the only one that succeeds despite (or because of) a giant cod-piece and Morrissey haircut. Dourif is only there to service the worst plot since my aborted student film, and Combs is unrecognizable and wasted as a rat-eating hobo.

I'm certain that ANYONE who may be reading this post could make a better film. Anyone.

Well now that's just a depressing review. So are you saying that they remade "Wizard of Gore" minus the gore? That would qualify this as one of the worse remakes, ever.

The otherwise serviceable practical effects work is so badly shot that you can't feel anyhting but pity for the effects artist, and less said about the ABUNDANCE of bad CG gore the better.

Though I must concede that the sound effects were pretty good.

This is by no means a good film, but there's a weird David Lynch by way of Cronenberg's Naked Lunch vibe to this that makes it sort of an interesting failure. Coombs is indeed completely wasted but Glover is glorious in his over the top Liberace style mad magician antics. He really needed a lot more screen time (as did the Suicide Girls). It was also sort of nice to see Near Dark's creepy kid Joshua Miller get some adult genre work as well. And I've seen far worse in the effects category than Steerpike's "Worst film ever" hyperbole led me to believe.

Worth a late night rental.
