Family Guy Star Wars

The recent Celebration featured this preview of the upcoming hour-long Family Guy Star Wars special. Maybe it's because of the reactions of the crowd, but I thought it was funny.

It definitely had its moments...but still more of the same except altered for Star Wars (i.e. Herbert as Obi Wan & Stewie as Vader = ugh!)

Ugh. That was pretty bad. The reactions were funny but more in a "Wow, was that audience easy to please" way.

The two easiest to please fanbases... combined!

Agreed.

That was stupid.

Family Guy fans would laugh their asses off if the film was nothing but Stewie standing there blinking for twenty minutes.

South Park's dissection of Family Guy remains the definitive statement on everything that's wrong with that show.

I don't get the point of this special. If the intent was to lampoon or satirize Star Wars...then, y'know, why not actually do that? I mean, putting aside that taking the piss out of the original Star Wars is about twenty years behind the times, why go through all this trouble if all they're gonna do is make more Herbert the Pedophile jokes? Where's the satire in basically re-creating every scene from the movie, except done "cr-aaaaaaazy"?

I used to be a big fan of this show and I still watch the early season re-runs, but it really hopped the rails after it got ressurected.

At least Family Guy can now do away with all that annoying story development to devote their time to becoming a full-fledged series of one joke parodies.

For some reason, both bits with the couch crack me up. I have no idea why.

Possibly due to mild retardation.

Brian chasing the Pig ear was pretty good. The rest was pretty crap.

Herbert is slowly becoming the worst one-joke carachter on Television.

Now it's just like The Simpsons. One note and tired.

Didn't Family Guy already sort of cover this with that very exact parody of the ending of A New Hope a couple years ago? I kind of agree with the above poster about that South Park episode. I mean, I've still found random gags amusing, but Trey and Matt's hour-long smackdown on the show's lack of substance really has deflated my enthusiasm for it. What's really sad is they've found a way to ruin the few original, non-pop culture referenced-based characters they've had due to overexposure. I used to love that old pedophile until he became a major character in an episode last season. And don't get me started on that unbearable five-plus minute fight with the chicken this season.

Yet, I'm still oddly looking forward to the Robot Chicken Star Wars episode, and that's a show I've never liked all that much.

I can imagine being the "new guy" and openly ripping into how tired the constant Herbert jokes are...followed directly by a massive talk-down by the entire staff who think eveything they think up is pure comic brillance.

Surely, there have been a few people within the writing-team who realize it's fucking old with the Herbert jokes...ditto with the "Steve is a closet homo-sexual" gags!

I dunno guys, I thought it was pretty funny.

Granted, that was 10 minutes out of a 40 minute show, so they probably cherry-picked. I could see it getting tedious after a while.

But really, they won me with the Bush/Cheney bumpersticker on the Star Destroyer.

Yeah, I don't care what your stance is on Family Guy, that was nice.*

*even though Mel Brooks used the bumper sticker gag in Spaceballs.

I'm curious how this will compare to the Robot Chicken special. Both shows draw their jokes from the same well, but Robot Chicken seems more successful at keeping the jokes fresh. This preview seems like they are just applying 'running gags' from Family Guy in a Star Wars context. Given how tired these jokes have become since the series' return, I am guessing that putting it in the over-parodied Star Wars universe will not help matters much. They might as well make a Matrix parody if they want to beat a decomposing horse.

Every minute of the Robot Chicken bit with Palpatine on the phone with Vader was funnier than this entire sad thing.

Me too. Jedi was the funniest though. I really liked the sail barge fight and how Han missed Boba Fett dying.
