Wisdom Teeth - Page 2

I'm 39 and still have all four of my wisdom teeth. I ain't givin them up without a fight, fuckers!

Last time I was at the dentist (4-5 months ago) he told me to have them taken out by a surgeon. They don't hurt at all, but they are coming in at a weird angle.

Thing is, I don't have insurance. The twice a year dentist appointment is under $100, so that's no biggie. Anyone have any idea how much the wisdom teeth removal is without insurance?

Even with relatively good dental coverage, my co-pay's going to be around $480. I think the full bill they showed me was between $2k and $2.5k. ETA: Also getting the full gas/anaesthetic instead of a local, which upped the bill more than I expected. Your mileage may vary.

This is for 3 teeth, exposed. The fourth never came through, isn't impacted, won't move anywhere anymore at this point, and causes no discomfort, so after getting 2 x-rays and 3 professional opinions I'm leaving it in, and gambling against some damn thing like a cyst or abcess forming 10 years down the line. (Fuck.) And since it never came through it'd fall under my Medical instead of Dental, obnoxiously, so no idea how much that last vestigial chomper'd run me.

Off to enjoy one last night of crunchy, salty foods and beer. And grocery shop for yogurts, ice creams, a ton fresh fruit for smoothies, and 2 bags of frozen peas for the face. I think I have the duct tape.

Damn! 2k?!

I was really hoping it'd be less than that. Good thing it's not hurting me at all right now. I should probably be looking for a new job with dental asap....

Exactly. Back when I was in 8th grade I remember my dentist told me we should remove them "just in case they cause issues later on". Screw that. He even admitted that they'd grown in perfectly straight, that there wasn't a crowding issue and that they were lined up top and bottom so that they press against each other correctly when my mouth is closed.

If they start hurting and somebody can make an argument that makes sense on why they need to come out, fine. Until then leave them alone.

All 4 of mine are gone. The tops came in but the bottoms only broke the skin. My lower right would flare up in terrible pain every couple of months. I assumed it was impacted. I had no insurance so I went to see a dentist at a public health center located in a housing project. It turns out my uppers were what was called hyper-erupted meaning they had grown out so far thy were pushing the lowers back in when they tried to grow. The ghetto dentist pulled my right upper for 35$ cash.

My upper left due to the hyper-erupt was up against my cheek. I thought I was keeping my teeth meticuolusly clean but apparently something got under there and rotted causing my tooth to crumble over time into a disgusting nub. When it was finally pulled I was worried there was nothing to grab on to, but it came out fine. My bottom two were taken out at the same time. They came out mostly fine thought there was a few moments where the dentist was removing fragments with what looked like an awl that I could feel scraping inside the socket. Oh, and once his grip slipped from the handle of one of his tools and he accidentally (?) punched me in the face.

Did he give you clove juice to ease the pain? You should have just told him that it is safe.

Bumping this thread since I had all 4 removed thursday morning. I was only there for about an hour, and I spent most of the day asleep. Only thing I had to "eat" was some chicken broth that Vanessa brought for me. Was up only about 2 hours in the early hours of the day, then slept most of friday. Happy to say that the clots are working quite well, and a few hours ago, I removed the gauze that I had and I had already been noticing each time I switched out the gauze that they were getting less bloody.

Ate some chicken noodle soup with bread, and a peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich earlier, so I'm hoping to be able to be eating solid food by tomorrow night or sunday night.

Hasn't been a full on horror story, but the swelling has been annoying. They didn't prescribe me Vicodin. I got what is basically Tylenol. It works though. If there's some minor annoying pain, it takes care of it, and I've been using cold packs for the swelling.

I've been lucky so far.

Good luck Rene!

I'm deathly afraid of being put to sleep so I had my wisdoms taken out while I was awake, over 3 weeks. One tooth a week and then 2 in the final week. I suffered no drowsiness and each of the teeth stopped bleeding by that evening so it was the smartest thing I ever did, as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks, Evi! The most pain I had was when they put in the IV into my forearm, and that was a pinch. I've never had a problem going to the dentist, so I had no qualms about being put to sleep. Everybody I talked to said that the best option was to be put to sleep. It cost a bit extra, but I'm not complaining.

I had all of mine taken out while knocked out and never felt any pain afterwards.  They gave me Percocet and I took it as prescribed, and never felt pain.  Make sure you remember to rinse your mouth with warm water after you eat, and DO NOT SWISH THE WATER IN YOUR MOUTH.  It'll re-open the wounds.  Just rock your head from side-to-side Stevie Wonder-style and let it drain out of your mouth without spitting.

Two of mine were impacted when I had all four taken out.  I started to wake up during the st one.  I think I had to be restrained when he was doing it.  Barely remember.  Pain was agony.  Couldn't eat for almost week.  Was starving after about four days, tried a burger, could barely chew it and it sat in my stomach like a rock for over a day, basically whole.  Painkilllers helped, but when they wore off, manomanoman.  One of the worst experiences of my life.

Had my wisdom teeth removed about 6 years ago. I had a crummy experience with getting knocked out for another tooth removal as a kid, so I opted for the laughing gas. Didn't feel a thing during extraction, though I ended up coughing up blood in the parking lot on the way home. Painkillers worked beautifully for the first 2 days, thought I would make it out scot-free. Third day I get dry socket, and it was pure hell for a few days after that. It was an angry, pulsating pain that never really allowed me a moment of comfort for the duration, and the Vicodin did absolutely nothing to help it.

I had my Wisdom Teeth out in early October of 2003... It was pretty horrible, all in all. I woke up half way through the procedure, feeling dull prodding and sharp pain in my mouth. I tried to tell the dentist to stop, and he shouted at me to "shut up! shut up!"

Then I blacked out, and I guess I was injected with more stuff

In the end, I learned that my teeth had been larger than anticipated and they had to really cut and pull to get them out, and the holes in my mouth bled all the way to January 04

I had all four of mine taken out when I was a wee lad, around 10 or 11. Somewhere in there.

Totally painless and I don't even remember any swelling. The cool bonus, at least to the little boy that I was (and still am), was that I was spitting bloody saliva for a day afterward.
