"Sex offenders getting younger, more violent"

This is ridiculous. Television does not make people rape or molest. I can't think of a show, film or song that promotes these acts, which the powers that be don't realize are only related to fucking in a mechanical sense - it's the feeling of superiority over another human being. But read the MSN message boards! Blah. I'm twenty, and you'd think my generation was raised to be a nation of little rapists treating women like Pog, to be forcibly slammed into. But no one blames Pog, do they?

These alarmists have a number of theories for this percieved rise, the usual pornography and violent movies to blame (because the heroes and heroines of Hollywood cinema are always raping themselves), but it's becoming intolerable to me how they continue to shift the responsibility for violent crime onto others. Especially when white people have committed the crime. And they utterly refuse to criticize the family unit - a girl will have consensual sex with her boyfriend, but once the guilt passed onto her by parents comes into play, she may mention the incidence to a guardian, who'll alert the authorities whether she lied she was raped or not.

I loathe this perception that we're at the mercy of our evil bodies that want to do us into jail at the slightest trigger of a violent image or song lyric. Those who are actual rapists can then comfort themselves that they're equal to the rest of us, and not to blame for their actions.

To increase these ridiculous laws is to make actual rape more permissable; if teen males are arrested for touching their girlfriends, it makes women seem helpless, unaware victims and men domineering control freaks. But at that age you know exactly what you're doing - it's the conservative fucking agenda that's the problem; because contrary to what they say about valuing and saving the children, they will just as soon lock them up.

If anything, these stereotypes and excuses made for their behaviour gives rapists the power to dehumanize their victims. Not that there's any more young, aspiring rapists out there than there's ever been - just more shitty, draconian laws to repress people.

I'd like to make a suggestion. If you haven't done so already, pick up a copy of Why They Kill, by Richard Rhodes. It chronicles the life and studies of criminologist Lonnie Athens, who developed a theory to explain the process by which anyone - regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, etc. - can become a violent offender. His theory developed out of years of interviews with incarcerated murderers, rapists, batterers, etc (apparently actually asking these people what they thought they were doing and how they got the way they were, letting them answser at length, and paying close attention to what they said was a novel approach). Athens distilled all their narratives down to their essential parts and identified the common points they all share, and then some. I don't know of anyone who has read this book and not found it rewarding, though it is very disturbing at times.
