My 48hrs Movie

Thread Starter
Our team's set up a Myspace page for 48hrs movie "The Lumberjack Goth" as well as the other non 48hrs stuff we've done. It's still very much a work in progress but we've got a vid of the movie up now at

http://www.myspace.com/flaccid_meat

Keep in mind it was all done in 48hrs so it's not exactly polished. Plan to have our entries from previous years up soon too.

P.S those who remember my statement in the screenwriters thread that I never use pop culture references will now know what a blatant liar I am.

That was pretty funny. "I'm gonna have to beat the buttfuckery out of you" was golden, though.

Thanks, any idea when your film's gonna be online?

P.S anyone with a myspace account should feel free to friend request.

Mine's gonna be online sometime later in the week. We're re-recording some of our music & wating for our composer to become available.

Our competition (Virginia Beach) is this weekend. I've got a pretty talented, and sizable group of people to work with, so I am rather excited.
Awesome. Good luck. Bit of advice: At 3pm the Sunday it's due, print your movie to tape. Doesn't matter if it's done or not. This is your back up--if something hits the fan at 6pm, you still have something to bring running to the drop off point. My competition said they'd accept a replacement after the deadline but bfore midnight, as long as they have something in their hands before the deadline.

Be sure to check the rules on that though. In our competition you could have someone standing by with a rough copy but if it got handed in then that was it, no replacements.
Yeah, I think it's one of those things where it's the individual city's call as to whether or not they'll let replacements in. I just wish we had thought of that ahead of time--I might've actually won something.
That was kind of cool, horrid...though now I have "Lonely Goth" by Mick Thomas going through my head.

Where are they showing these, KCI? Or do only the filmmakers get to vote on the movie that gets submitted to the final round?

I think the screenings are open to the public. They are both at the Cinema Cafe Art (ie Pembroke) at 8pm on Wednesday the 20th and Thursday the 21st. My team's film is screening on Wed. Half will be screened one night and half the other. I believe audience awards will be voted on for both nights.

To my understanding though the judges will pick the winner.

Next time I do this I'm going to put out an open call to Chewers. But hell, come to the screening. I'll steal a beer for you.

We shall do this.

This sounds like it could be fun. What's the ticket charge?
My lord it's over...quite the experience. I'm exhausted. I probably got about 5 hours of sleep this weekend. We got the Spy genre and decided to be different and attempt to do a serious movie. I think it came out well. I'll have a link set up and all that good stuff soon. I ended up directing and starring, which was not my intention this weekend....

Summer..the sales are at the door. They are saying that advance sales won't be offered, so it is most likely a get there a good time early and get a ticket. Let me know
post #15 of 30
Big props for taking your genre seriously. I got real tired during my screening that everyone treated their genre as a joke. On the upside, it'll make people remember your film as a stand out.

kingcujoI,

Are you going to have your film up on youtube or anything to watch? I was planning on coming on Wednesday, but on Sunday I started down with a cold. By Wednesday, I was having coughing fits every 5-10 minutes. I made the decision not to come, as I didn't want to be one of those people at the theater everyone hates for destroying their watching experience.

horrid,

Edited: That was hilarious! The sound dropped a bit around the part when Environmental asked BJ to cross trees with... was it (spoiler tag)sharks?

GregClark,

Have you gotten your film up online, yet?

Thank you, and yes you heard that line right. Audio is terrible in that scene (sorry RyanS~), the building was all glass and concrete and there are two big waterfalls in there.

Sorry guys. I've been exhausted. We did not win the overall award. We did however win a best film award from one of the individual judges, which at least means one of the three was in our corner. I'm not going to complain about the film that won...because I'm not sure we made it to necessarily win. We made it for ourselves. I personally wanted to see if I could make something slick in the Hollywood style. My other work, which I hope to have up soon has been far less mainstream.

So blah blah blah...

Here it is...Please excuse the downgrade in quality that real player causes. We shot in 24pa on a DVX100a. We feel like we got a really nice filmic picture out of it...

Yeah, I was pretty miffed after our weekend was over that due to some, *ahem* problems with certain team members not doing their certain jobs, we were late getting our film turned in. But when we screened, we got some great responses, and everyone I talked to said they enjoyed the fact that we didn't just make a joke out of the whole thing, and decided to make a real movie. That meant more for me than some piece of paper could, because it made me realize that not only could I do something like this, I could do it well enough to ellicit the reaction I wanted out of the audience.

The only thing about that is that it seemed to me that all the films that made the finals were films that treated it as a comedy. Is that the overall pattern? And if so, is that just because of the nature of the judging rewarding crowd-pleasing films?

The competition is 4 years old here, and every year there are more an more serious entries, as teams get more confidence in what they can achieve on 48hrs. The judges are if anything more lenient on serious movies because they want to encourage it.
We did a serious one last year, honestly I just didn't have as much fun making it (although that probably had more to do with the team dynamic than anything).

I think the reason most teams go for comedy is that a funny line has more of a chance of still getting a laugh with bad acting and shoddy camera work, than a dramatic scene does of causing an emotional responce with bad acting and shoddy camera work. A lot of people treat it as just a fun weekend to go make a silly movie.

I think next year we'll probably do comedy again but go for more of a smart comedy. Although that will surely go out the window when we get given puppet as a genre.

I really liked your movie KingcugoI. Not sure if you'll be interested but someone sent me this link http://medialab.ifc.com/content.jsp?...ins_creed.html might be something else you could enter your film in and maybe win some coin.

Bravo. That was very nicely done. The use of the Memorial near the convention center was a great location choice. It's hard for me to wrap my brain around another film beating that. I might have muck around and see if I can find the winner.

Great job. I'm sorry I didn't get to see it on the big screen.

Well, I finally managed to get my music guy back in to re-record his score (we lost the original files), so here it is, Postcard From Paris:

I really enjoyed this.

Greg,

That was a lot of fun. In particular, I wanted to compliment you on using the lead's reactions in the reflection during the break-up speech. Also, that's a helluva sunset!

What were the designated conditions for your competition?

That was cool Greg. Quirky but not silly. Had some weight to it too, which is nice to see in a 48hrs flick.
Thanks for the compliments, everyone. I'm always a little nervous showing this around, and not just because we went the road less traveled and got serious. The subject matter here was pretty personal--I had just gotten a pretty bad kick in the teeth from my now-ex girlfriend, and so when we sat down to start knocking around ideas for the weekend I saw a chance to put a lot of that on paper. I'm glad the crew I had were as willing to make something a little more subdued.

The idea to do the reflection actually goes to my lead, Steven Chambers. We filmed that scene at the tail end of a 12-hour shooting spree, and as you can tell, the scene required both actors to be emotionally involved. I was going for a two-shot with them standing on a balconey and the sunset in the background, but Steven was so exausted at that point that he didn't feel like he could give the scene his all on camera, and suggested using his reflection and his vocals to get it across. It turned out far better than anything I had been thinking of.

And that sunset was almost like a freak accident. We were looking for a dock, found this house where no one was home, and the sun was just sitting there, right above the water (it was about 40 minutes before sunset). I couldn't have asked for a more perfect look, and I thank my lucky stars for that shot, because we were actually forecast to have rain that afternoon.

If you're talking about the prop/character/line of dialogue stipulations, they were:

Character: Stan Gibbs, Communicable Disease Specialist

Prop: Big Pink Eraser

Line of dialogue: "You want truth? So do I."
