New Kanye West

Taken from forthcoming album 'Graduation'...

http://kanyewest.com/video/kanye_video.html

Was gonna post in the rap / hip-hop catch-all thread, but figured new music from Kanyeezy is enough of an event in its own right.

I like this tune. Kanye's brattish attitude can certainly irritate and he's still not the greatest emcee ("apologing?" what the hell?), but the man just keeps putting out good music.
Pretty good song. I pretty much always complain about the things you mentioned when it comes to Kanye, but the man still always manages to make songs that I can't help but like.
Every time I see Kanye West I want to super-kick him in the face, of course I'm "boppin'" my head to whatever his latest tune is while doing so.

That's the John Mayer/Kanye match-up. Can you say match made in heaven? Actually, it's kind of silly. I heard an earlier version of this song that was far better. Oh well.

And, just a question: is he going to leak ALL of his album before it's released?
I really like this song, and I like West. I'm a bigger fan of his production than his rapping, but he puts enough lyrical meat on the bones to make his rhymes usually pretty interesting. Same thing here.

But he really is a fantastic producer. Any of you who enjoyed the great Jay-Z song "Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)" in the American Gangster trailer have Kanye the producer to thank for it.

Here's the second single / video, 'Stronger'. The Daft Punk lift's a nice change of pace for hip-hop if you ask me, and a reminder that one of the things separating Kanye from the pack is his broader taste in music.

I do like Kanye's singles but never again will I be suckered into buying one of his shitty albums. Damn that Late Registration.

Crazy talk, Neaux! I'm genuinely curious as to how anyone could call Kanye's albums "shitty". The former's annoying skits aside, there aren't many recent long-players (of any genre) much more complete and well-executed from top-to-bottom than 'The College Dropout' and, perhaps even more so, 'Late Registration'. If anything, Kanye's pop-oriented singles have often been the albums' weaker moments ('All Falls Down,' 'Heard 'Em Say'). He strikes me as as the consummate album artist.
I think he has some great lines tucked away in some awful lyrics and has some great hooks and samples to mask his lack of an original voice. He's a pretty good producer.

And he can make some good singles.. that suckered me into buying Late Registration.

Its rare that I'd want my money back from buying a CD, but this was probably one of maybe 3 occasions where I felt duped and wanted a refund.
I like both singles. And I thought Late Registration was a great album. I actually prefer it to College Dropout
post #11 of 84
Kanye is definitely trending darker with this record. Its not the self-aware musical leap that Late Registration was from College Dropout, but there are some really nice tracks on here.
Not a fan of Hip Hop really but I dug Stronger and the Akira-Inspired music video.
The Daft Punk sample on Stronger is fantastic, but lyrically it's certainly the weakest song on Graduation.
He's great for hip-hop, but the overreliance on 80s synths and lazy drum loops is really killing this record for me. He's essentially turned into DJ Toomp with less-interesting drums.

It's such a step backwards from the lush orchestration and real instrumentation all over Late Registration.
Well, that's a bummer. The muscial arrangements were my favorite part of Late Registration. I take it he didn't work with Brion again?
Picking this up after work, with high hopes. Maybe I should reign them in, but I can't help it. Jon Brion came back and produced a few tracks again, right?

And sorry, if you consider Kanye West's albums "shitty", you don't like hip hop.
At first, I thought all the songs sounded the same, and they still do after a few listens. But I do like the sound, and I think he's doing it better service than, say, Pharell.

Hmmm, I like DJ Toomp. Looks like only one Jon Brion produced track made the album, but I'm curious to see how it plays for me.
Can't wait to get this after work. Still, I'm a bit disappointed there's only one Brion production on there.
After the baroque overproduction of Late Registration, I'm kind of glad to hear something more minimalist from Kanye, even if the overall sound isn't as varied.

I still can't get used to the fact that they slowed down the Daft Punk sample. I keep wanting the song to speed up.
Does anyone know the sample in Good Life? It's been nagging me for weeks now. It kind of reminds me of PYT (Pretty Young Thing), but that's not it. Besides Good Life, Champion and Can't Tell Me Nothing are the big hits on the album for me.

Despite the Daft Punk sample, I don't particularly like Stronger and I Wonder is god awful. Kanye can't sing, so he just shouts the lyrics. I fast forward past it every time.
I'll give Stronger another spin, but I don't think I'll like it. It just fucks with my head too much. I've listened to the Daft Punk tune way too much to like what he did to it.

More than anything else it's fantastic to hear that sample in clubs, I was too young to hear it at a nightclub when the song was first big and it's one of my favourite songs ever.

Yeah, it's great when they keep the beat the way it should be.
I'm going to have to listen to both songs now, I know the first use of the sample is slowed down but I never picked up that the other parts were slowed down to. You may have ruined Stronger for me inadvertently.
I don't know how anyone else could miss it. It's slowed down at least 2 beats. It makes me frustrated.
Shit you're right, it's like a 12 second sample as opposed to the ten or so seconds of the original song...and now the song seems to be in slow motion.

Damn it Jason, now there's nothing to disguise the awful lyrics.
Sooooooo sloooooooow...
If anything this has unearthed a drastic and horrifying truth, I no longer seem to have my copy of Discovery. I just had to Youtube the song as I couldn't find it on my computer...and now the CD itself seems to have Houdini'd somewhere.
I heard Homework is a better Daft Punk album, but man.. Discovery rules.

And yes, that is PYT he's sampling.
Sounds like everyone already got this. I better get on it.

Really? Did he slow it down like the Daft Punk sample? I dug out my MJ CDs just to listen to PYT and it seemed similar, yet off somehow.

I got it for free HERE. And no I don't feel guilty.

You should.
I usually don't go for hip hop/rap because the lyrics don't do anything for me. But for whatever reason, Kanye's CDs are all in my collection. Probably because it's good.

Ever listen to Common/Mos Def/Talib Kweli? I listen almost exclusively to hip hop and I don't like the lyrics of most mainstream artists either.

Please, as a favour to your ears, download Black on Both Sides, forget what race you are, and listen to the black Ginsburg.
I've never listen to Mos Def's music, but I always thought he was a well spoken person, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were good on a conceptual and lyrical level.

I'm really, really liking it. It's a little more reserved, so while it may not hit as many home runs, I feel like just about every song is a solid stand-up double, with a couple triples thrown in.

Lyrically it's about what we've come to expect. He's sometimes very clever, sometimes corny. I'm actually really liking the synth production.

Love the opener "Good Morning" sampling Elton John's voice, still haven't gotten tired of "Can't Tell Me Nothing", and "Flashing Lights" stands out as well. In fact, I like every song with about two exceptions.

"Barry Bonds" feels like it should be on Lil Wayne's album, not this one. It's not a terrible song (Weezy's atrocious verse notwithstanding), it's just out of place on this album. And "Drunk Hot Girls", not sure what the thinking was behind this one, but it was wrong. Also out of place, on top of just being a bad song.

Most interesting song on the album is probably "Big Brother", a telling ode to his mentor Jay-Z which simultaneously puts him on a pedestal and complains about him holding Kanye back.

By the way, if having Coldplay on a song was an idea Kanye thinks Jay-Z stole from him, he gets nice revenge here. Chris Martin's chorus on "Homecoming" blows Jay's "Beach Chair" completely out of the water.

I like kanye west but sometimes he just pushes my temper to the limits with his "i am always right attitude" this week he said:

"he was the best person to open 2007 MTV and that britney made a messy performance"
What's wrong with that? He's right.

I haven't finished listening to the album yet but I like it so far. I'm glad there isn't a stupid skit between every song.

Kanye West - Not a fan of the Black Eyed Peas or MTV.

Yeah he doesn't seem like a dick head at all.

No, and thank God. I can't remember if I was ever able to stand the horrific skits on his previous albums, bu I know that nowadays I can't hit "skip" fast enough.

Kanye often speaks the truth, but the problem is he comes off as a whiny bitch all the time. His rants play like an insecure little kid desperately in need of validation. And there's nothing wrong with validation, but Kanye wants it from people/organizations who don't mean shit. Complaining about not winning a MTV Video Music Award? Those things are a fucking joke. Kanye has the respect of his peers, not to mention really good record sales. He needs to just enjoy having a career out of something he presumably loves doing, and stop worrying about stupid bullshit. Yes, it sucks that Britney Spears and JT got the main stage. But throwing a temper tantrum doesn't resolve the situation and makes him come off like a cry-baby.
