New Kanye West - Page 2

It's so frickin' weird, but the one-two punch of "Drunk and Hot Girls" (Sure, he Diddy-ed Can, but better that than a hot R&B sample) and "Flashing Lights" is rocking my world right now.

Not that there aren't other heaters on the record, but that's my favorite stretch.
Where can I get that West/Mayer collaboration? I can't find it on iTunes and the only link on Hype Machine I saw won't download for me. I hate this "you can only get this track on the Japanese import" nonsense.

Thank you for saying that. I really really like those two tracks and I was hoping someone here would share that sentiment before I stepped up to do so, too.

I'm nuts over the "Flashing Lights" beat. Especially at the :32 mark. Dwele adds nicely to the song, as well.

And I kinda hated "Drunk and Hot Girls" at first but I had a long drive last night and heard it on repeat a few times and really got the hang of it. Now I like it as much as the rest.

So, three days after getting it, so far the only songs that still don't work for me are "I Wonder" and "Good Life" (I REALLY wanna like it but something won't let me).

By the way, CHUD probably isn't the best forum to talk about how Kanye's album compares to 50's new one, right?
I like the new Kanye better. Even though I like 50 Cent more in interviews.
Slant Magazine's Curtis review pretty much mirrors what I think about the album, except that I like "Ayo Technology", "Follow My Lead" and "My Gun Go Off" more than I probably should.

The Semi-Official Rap/Hip Hop Thread would be a good place to talk about it (plug). Although, 50 is likely to be bashed, but any discussion is welcome.

"I Wonder" is just terrible. But "Good Life" is one of my faves on the album, mainly because of the PYT sample. I admit lyrically it's not all that original or clever. It's just a fun song celebrating fame and money.
I don't find either of them terrible per se, but just not as engaging as the rest. They're just kinda there. But, hell, I even got to like "Barry Bonds", so, there's hope yet.

I finally picked up Jay's The Blueprint a few days ago, though, so I'm kinda spoiled by it. I got The Blueprint², too, but "meh".

(No, I'm not new to Jay-Z, I just didn't have either of those two in their complete versions.)

"Drunk and Hot Girls" still grates on me. Completely agree with Micah on "Flashing Lights", it's currently my favorite song on the album. For those who also like Clipse, there's a remix floating around with them rapping over the beat. Personally, my favorite stretch extends from "Flashing Lights" till the end, with "Everything I Am" growing on me every day.

Slightly disagree with Diva in that the beat and sample for "I Wonder" really works for me. Granted, when I actually listened to Kanye's first couple verses, it's indeed a pretty awkward half-yell half rap thing that doesn't really work. But I tend to sort of tune him out, and the rest of the song is catchy.

I like "Homecoming" too. Interestingly enough, Kanye's verses are re-dos of a "The College Dropout" cut called "Home". Same lyrics, different tempo and sample. But a nice unreleased song.

My thought on "Curtis" vs. "Graduation" will be posted in the great rap/hip hop thread englebert linked to. Don't be a stranger.

I have to admit that I have yet to make it all the way through the song. It surprises me to hear that the second half is that different from the first half. I'll try and give the whole song a listen, but man the first few versus are brutal to get through.

*Edit: You're right. Once he switches from singing to rapping it gets infinitely better. Still, not one of my favorite songs on the album.

I'm loving "Drunk and Hot Girls", it's possibly my favorite song on the album so far. I don't know if Kanye made the beat with Mos in mind, but it certainly feels that way to me. It feels like such a chill song, but I still can't help nodding my head to beat.

EDIT: Overall, I'm liking it. Even the singles aren't really grating on me like "Diamonds" did. Kanye seems to have an incredible talent for collaborating with artists that I don't like and yet I still love the songs, see "Heard 'Em Say", "Good Life", and "Homecoming."

I'm not sure how I feel about "I Wonder", I love the sample, but I see where Diva is coming from. To be honest, Kanye isn't the best rapper, but he at least tries lyrically and so I give him a pass on any verbal stuff he is doing. "I Wonder" will probably be one of those tracks that I enjoy when it is in the background, but if I'm actively listening, I'll skip it if I'm not in the right mood.

I think the singles for this album have been maybe the most solid he's put out yet, at least for my tastes. I never really cared for the singles off "Late Registration". "Gold Digger" was just so loud and excessively repetitive with the Ray Charles sample it became irritating. "Can't Tell Me Nothing" and "The Good Life" are really nice, and "Stronger", while pushing it, still works for me.

Maybe its because I'm knee-deep in my dissertation on identity denial - when a person isn't recognized as as a member of an important ingroup (e.g., a light skinned Black person being rejected by other Blacks) - but "Everything I Am" seems more meaningful to me than it probably really is.

Have you published any papers? I'd be interested in reading them.

Next year, hopefully.

I'm surprised Homecoming isn't one of the singles for this album. It is catchy as hell and I could see it having huge crossover appeal.
So, I didn't buy this during the initial release week sales. I guess I wasn't sold by the first two singles. Haven't listened to a leak yet.

I will say that from the shelves I saw today, Kanye should be kicking 50's ass in that little sales challenge.
It's at least worth downloading. It's my favorite Kanye album so far. I've been listening to it over and over again for the past few days and it just keeps getting better.

As of Sept. 14, Kayne is outselling 50 cent by 180,000, but over the weekend I would not be surprised if that gap grows.

So "Home" was an unreleased song meant for College Dropout? Where did you get it? I really like "Homecoming", but I'm curious to hear it done in another way.

Actually, listening again, I believe it was a cut from "Late Registration". It's got the same verses from Kanye as "Homecoming", but the production is completely different.

After listening to this three times, it's definitely a very good disc. No, it never reaches the level of Kanye's first two albums, but it gets better with every spin. It grows on you.

I gotta say how much I'm loving "Flashing Lights". It should be the next single. And I'm feeling "Drunk and Hot Girls". I know most people are giving it hell but I love the production on it.

The only song I don't care for is "Barry Bonds". It's not really a bad song, but like Stew said, it doesn't belong here.

So 12 out of 13 songs is pretty damn good. That said, there's no showstopper like there were on "Dropout" and "Registration". Meaning no song that I just had to listen to again right away after it ended the first time. And this is Kanye's weakest lyrical outing yet.

All in all, Kanye delivered once again.

Barry Bonds is definitely weakest track and the most skip-worthy.

At first this album didn't grab me, but it grew on me big time. I've been listening to it constantly and it feels much stronger to me that Kanye's previous albums. This is especially true with Late Registration, which grabbed me at first, but got old much faster than I expected. College Dropout still has plenty of standout songs, but it lacks the consistency of Graduation. The albums that I can enjoy from front to back are the ones that I tend to enjoy the most over time. Also, no more idiotic skits, finally. There should be a moratorium on skits on hip hop albums. At best they are mildly amusing once or twice and at worst they detract from my enjoyment of even the best albums.

I'm with englebert on this one, I think I like this better than his previous albums, mostly on consistency points. Both of his previous albums have their high points to be sure, but they also have far more filler than "Graduation". The skits for one, but having just listened to "Late Registration" all the way through, there's several duds (the Brandy number comes to mind immediately). It all sort of comes down to personal taste. If you like home runs, granted, "The College Dropout" has more standouts. But after the initial buzz of a new album wears off, I find myself appreciating the album that has the greatest replay value, the one that's consistently great. The one I can turn on and neverreach for the "skip" button. I foresee "Graduation" keeping the edge in this department for me personally.

I've gotten a tad bit more receptive to "Drunk and Hot Girls", and it's another example of this album's consistency. Pick the 2 worst songs off each of his three albums, and "Graduation"'s weak spots are far more tolerable.
This album has much more relistenability (is that even a word?) for me. The previous albums had stronger singles, but as has been mentioned, the consistency of the current album is much better than the previous.

I can, and do, listen to "Can't Tell Me Nothing" over and over again. It just works for me.

Me too. I'm a sucker for songs that are basically anthems for broke people with lofty goals. "Wait till I get my money right", indeed. See also, Jay-Z's "I Just Wanna Love U".
I crack up at the "now you're sober/how'd I know you'd say that?" line in "Drunk and Hot Girls" every time. And I can't stop listening to "Flashing Lights" and "Good Life", to the detriment of enjoying the rest of the great cuts on the disc.
Kanye far exceeded my expectations, 50 far underwhelmed my expectations.

Kanye's production skills are just unparalleled...I still can't get tired of Can't Tell Me Nothing...Everything I Am is probably my favorite track, glad Common passed on the beat.

"Aaa aaa aa aa aa, that’s how the fuck you sound" makes me laugh every time I hear it. And "Good Life" is such a fun, party anthem. I love it.

Well, I know of at least one slight change that could have this album even better. From Jay-Z:

It's out of step with the rest of the album regardless, but at least the gremlin-voiced Lil Wayne wouldn't have been allowed to lay down such a weak verse. Jay-Z has always done an extra-nice cameo on Kanye's albums, sort of a shame he didn't make it onto this one.

It sort of makes sense that he isn't on the album though. It's like Kanye is his own man now, no longer in Jay's shadow and "Big Brother" is a nice way to address that.
Good point, very true. I just honestly cannot understand the fascination with Lil Wayne. He's ridiculous, and not very good. Yte he's one of the most popular rappers out there these days, but each and every time I hear him on a track, I can't understand it. He's even more terrible on Chamillionaire's album. I'd start a thread if I thought anyone would reply, but yeah, I really wish "Graduation" didn't have him included.
I'm not wild about L'il Wayne's spot on the CD and I can't say I'm his biggest fan, but I can see why some people like him. He has a VERY distinctive style that you don't hear anywhere else and he's also someone who isn't afraid to try new things (I like "I Feel Like Dying" a lot more than I thought I would.)
Could the video for Stronger be any more all over the place?
This is why people hate Kanye

Here he is drunk as hell after doing an interview on "the Wendy Williams Experience". He prattles on and on about how he's the number 1 human in music, then makes it clear that he's not on any drugs, even thought it looks very much like he's on drugs. *shakes head* Kanye, Kanye, Kanye...
