Kill Bill 4 disc set and Death Proof

Sept 18 is shaping up to be a wallet breaker. Kill Bill is being released in a 4 disc set and according to the amazon placeholder page, is the NC-17 cut. No word on what extras or if this is "The Whole Bloody Affair" or just different cuts of each movie.

Also that day two separate editions of Death Proof, set 1, set 2 It looks like the extended cut, but no official word on what the differences between the two are or whether or not "Grindhouse" will be released with both movies together. No placeholder on Planet Terror yet, but with all of this news I'd expect an official announcement in the next few days. My best guess is that we will be looking at a barebones version of "Grindhouse" with the theatrical cuts/fake trailers together, barebones extended cuts of each movie, and a special edition of each movie. One giant set would probably be too much to ask.

I won't get too amped until there's an official announcement but hopefully the KILL BILL news is legit. I'm sure whatever DEATH PROOF release comes out that day it will just be the first of many.

All this on the same day as the COMMANDO DC? That would be nice.

They should just go for a three-disc Grindhouse set, with the theatrical cut on disc one (it's essential to keep the double feature intact in some form; Hobo with a Shotgun should be included as a pre-film Easter egg), extended Planet Terror (if such a thing exists) with extras on disc 2, and the extended Death Proof with its own extras on disc three. As for Kill Bill, they're going to put it back together as one movie, and split the movie into two discs. Does that seem utterly pointless to anyone else?

Well so long as it is more than just taking the credits out of part one (I think we are looking at a relatively different cut of the movie), so as long as that sacrifice was made to get the best transfer possible, I am ok with it.

As for GH, I take anything I can get. I will buy every release they put out if each release is a different cut of the movie.

Hell yes on Hobo, if there is no Hobo on this dvd then there really is no point in buying it.

Once this Kill Bill edition is released, I will finally own a Tarantino dvd.

I think it's at least plausible on Kill Bill, since I know it's been announced for Blu-Ray release in the relatively near future. It would probably be a good idea to double-dip the DVD at the same time.

No, because when it was put together in one long movie overseas, it was not just splicing one to the end of another, it was a differant cut, making them flow, if I remember right. I don't mind switching discs in the middle if it means they keep the quality great.

It's been amazing to watch this non-story develop across the internet. I spotted it at Criterion Forum.org about five days ago where it had been ruled as nothing.

Now, it makes its way via the usual hotspots to here.

Sometimes the Internets truly amazes me.

OK, if it is a different cut, it does make more sense. I'll definitely be buying it anyway, who am I kidding. It'd be nice to see the House of Blue Leaves battle in colour, if that's in this version too.

Here comes the odd..the rights to the vol 1 and vol 2 releases are owned by disney and the rights to the whole bloody affair cut are owned by Weinstein, so the Blu Rays are unrelated to this release.
Well it makes sense after what Grindhouse made that they'd finally force this cash-in. I mean the idea of the Whole Bloody Affair was brought up before the second one came out and we've been waiting this long for it.

Money = SPENT.

While it's neat to see the blood and gore in full colour (thanks to the Unrated Japanese Disc I have) the fight actually benefits from the monochrome treatment. With the full on colour it just gets a little too hard to follow things (the blood is really vibrant).

I like the transition to black and white. I haven't seen it in full color, but I hope they don't change that aspect.
The fact that transition exists tells me that QT always intended that sequence to be monochrome.

I could be totally off here but I think the scene was originally submitted in color. I have no source for that but seem to remember reading about it. Which way is better I don't know, but if the rating on Amazon's page is correct, this version will have that scene in color.
Of course it will be in color. It was in color just about everywhere else in the world, I believe.

Money=SPENT? Indeed...
I'd have to agree it was supposed to be in color. If it had been shot for black and white, the blood would have been much darker. If you notice, for much of the fight, when she slashes people it looks like sweat or water is coming off of them because it's all red in the uncut version. Anybody who's shot anything with blood in black and white will tell you that the blood basically has to be a very, very dark color to show up properly. I believe it was something like chocolate syrup for the shower scene in Psycho.

As for these DVDs, of course I'll buy Death Proof like an idiot, regardless of the quality or supplements, out of sheer desperation to watch it over and over, much as I did with the bare-bones Kill Bill DVDs back in 04. And as for the Whole Bloody Affair with actual supplements, it's about damn time. I don't know what bothers me more, the fact that we're not getting that theatrical release of the DVD version of Kill Bill, or that we're not getting a DVD release of the theatrical version of Grindhouse.

Thankfully we don't know if this is the case yet..though I guess it can be argued that since that experience was meant for the theater maybe it should be kept there..more realistically this is Weinstein taking what could have been a good 3 disc 25 dollar set and making it into 2 20 dollar dvds and 2 15 dollar dvds to recoup their losses on this.

You're right. The black and white was to appease the MPAA. Thus, the Japanese release is in color. The House of Blue Leaves is in full color on youtube if you're curious.

Yeah yeah, I'm sure we will get it eventually, and this being a business I can understand how they would need to milk this thing dry. Still, I can't help but feel like we're somehow being punished for liking their movie. Since the rest of the country wasn't so impressed, now those of us who actually supported it will have to continue supporting it in...unsavory ways. All I can hear right now is that little tag from the end of the Machete trailer: "Brought to you by your friends at the Weinstein Company!"
Finally! I have somehow held out on buying the single versions of Kill Bill for all of this time.
I have the Uncut Kill Bill Vol 1 from Japan. Outside of the House of Blue Leaves in color the anime scene is about 5 seconds longer
post #26 of 33
Finally. Tarantino promised this as soon as Miramax split the movie in two. He said a single edit would come stateside.

I just noticed that I also don't own a Tarantino movie. Completely forgot.

They're totally fucking us in the ass. I want to own this movie as it was originally presented. I went and saw Grindhouse three times, taking at least two people with me each time, and recommended it to everyone else I know. They should send me a fucking Christmas card. Or Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a cheerleader outfit.

UPDATE: Amazon's placeholder page for Kill Bill has been updated to call it "Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair" confirming which cut we're getting, as well as changing the date to November 4. Death Proof currently remains at Sept 18.

November 4th is a Sunday.

The release date on Amazon is Tuesday, November 6th.

I read the DVD cover was shown at Comic Con. This is supposed to be it.

Devin - you were there, was this really shown there or is it a fake?

Hot damn, I hope that's real.
That cover kinda looks like the cover of Watchmen, but less happy. My question is, what are they gonna give us to make it worth waiting so long for a proper DVD?
