Mark Knopfler

Has anyone been listening to his solo work, I got 'Sailing to Phildelphia' a few years ago and I've just started to listen to it again recently, the title track is such a great song, the dreamlike flow of the song and the evocation of the west. The rest of the CD is pretty good, I've also picked up recently 'The Ragpicker's Dream' and his stripped down rootsy approach works even better on tracks like 'Hill Farmer's Blues' and 'Devil Baby' as well his character sketches of small town life and drifters.

Finally, I also bought his latest 'Shang-ri La' it's ok but nothing that really stands out like on his previous releases, maybe I just need to listen to it abit more. I'm also gonna pick up his 'Roadrunning' collaboration with Emmylou Harris.

Seen him a bunch of times and am a lifelong fan. I like some of the Dire Straits stuff better but he's great mood music and my favorite guitarist ever.

He did an album with Chet Atkins. How cool is that?

I haven't heard that one.

It's kind of hard to separate his Dire Straits work from his solo efforts seeing as he was the driving force of that band but his storytelling skills have definitely improved with age.

What's cool about Mark Knopfler is that those neon, 1984-era MTV squiggly lines follow him wherever he goes.

I like the guy a lot. "Sailing..." is indeed a very nice album.

A little piece of my heart is always captivated every time I hear the, "All the Roadrunning" duet with Emmylou Harris. But then there's a little piece of my heart for anything Emmylou Harris.

As for a solid Mark Knopfler solo I'll go with, "Boom Like That."

Always been a fan of the man, since his Dire Straits days, including his work on the soundtracks for Local Hero, The Princess Bride and A Shot at Glory.

My three favorite tracks from "Sailing to Philadelphia" are the title track (feat. James Taylor), "The Last Laugh" (feat. Van Morrison), and "What It Is," which has some of his amazing guitar handiwork throughout.

A friend of mine shared "Shangri-La" with me and I was an instant fan of the album.

I've heard a handful of tracks from "All the Roadrunning" on one of the local radio stations and have been thinking of picking it up.

And finally, a co-worker (whose also an avid musician) told me of his collaboration with Chet Atkins. He actually told me that Knopfler lives in Nashville pretty much full-time now, though I'd have to imagine he's got a nice place back in his homeland of Scotland.

Also, check out his soundtrack work from the movies Cal and Last Exit to Brooklyn. Definitely one of my favorite guitarists.

I love "There'll Be Some Changes Made". Such a fun track.

You could also check out the Notting Hillbillies: Steve Phillips, Mark Knopfler, Guy Fletcher, and Brendan Croker. Really great album.

Knopfler may well be the smoothest guitar player I have ever seen live.

I picked up 'All the Roadrunning' a few weeks ago, it's not bad. I like the country rock of 'This is Us' the bluesy 'I dug up a diamond' and the lovely ballad 'Love and Happiness' the rest is ok but nothing great.

STRONG second on the "Notting Hillbillies" love. Some great stuff there. And I lost my mind the first time I heard the entirety of "Love over Gold".

I didn't realize he had a new album out, I saw it in a store, it's called 'Get Lucky', I immediately bought it. I absolutely loved his last album 'Kill to get Crimson' and so far, Get Lucky is pretty strong. There's a heavy folk feel to this one, on tracks like 'Border Reiver' and 'So far from the clyde', 'Monteleone' is absolutely gorgeous song.

Kill is still his strongest work, but I still really like Get Lucky.

"Boom, Like That" Gives me fucking chills. I love this man.

Belatedly joining this thread, but want to second all the opinions about the strength of his solo work.

I was lucky enough to see him live at the Albert Hall on the 'Philadelphia' tour. Absolutely blown away. As good live as it is on disc - I simply can't sing his praises enough.

And the quality of the material is so strong. 'Philadelphia' is strong from start to finish; 'SHangri-La' was good 'n solid. 'roadrunning' - blew me away, but then I think EmmyLou Harris is great as well.

Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson are two of the most frequently played cds in my car. Them, and John Martyn.

I think Kill to get crimson is his strongest effort by far. It's probably his most personal album, some of the songs really sound like a collection of memories of his youth, The Scaffolders Wife is a wonderful ballad, Secondary Waltz has a really nice charm and In The Sky really is a lovely song.

I didn't really care for Shangri-La.
