So does a buddy of mine. How many girls has he had sex with since? None. But that's because he's a fucking pussy, not because of the plastic musical instruments.
If anything, cute plastic guitars with a fun game you can pick up and play brings chicks IN.

After playing Freebird co-op with my friend's hot new neighbor, we went next door to her place for some drunken nastiness. Rock n' Roll.

Yet the drum set is where the line is drawn for me.

I hope this is fucking true, because I'd love to be able to play drums, but since I live in an apartment and cannot afford a electronic drum kit, this sounds like the next best thing. This game cannot come fast enough.
No kidding. This is what sold me when I first heard about this game a while ago. Have you ever played Drummania in arcades? It's honestly the sweetest thing ever. (Too bad all the local arcades got rid of their machines a few years ago, along with their Beatmania machines.)

This game is pretty much like the Japanese version, but with english music. (I also hope that the controls are a lot better.)

I'm sure that it gets cramped though when you're playing with a full set. From what I read, everyone shares the same screen that's broken off into different sections. For those with smaller sized T.V.s, I can see how this would get annoying, but I'm sure it won't be that bad.

I also like what they did with the guitar. They have 5 normal keys like the Guitar Hero controller and then 5 keys higher up on the neck which are smaller and suppose to be a lot easier for solos.

Another great thing that GH doesn't have is the fact that you can make your own logos. Oh my God, my friends and I have some wonderful ideas for band names. I also like the fact that it's an EA game since I have a lot of faith in EA and their customization.

The only thing I'm worried about is the price, but I'm sure it's going to be well worth it.
I'm curious to play the drums for this game because I'm a drummer in real life, so I wonder if I will have the reaction that some guitarists have to Guitar Hero where they would rather just play the real thing instead. Considering how much I love Guitar Hero though, I doubt I would have this reaction as long as it is an accurate re-representation.

I must own this game now! Goddamn, I can't wait for those drums....
I assume that middle section is the drums? If so, that's pretty neat. I was wondering how that was going to work.
they took it down, but its on youtube....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9b-8LYLGq8

someone from harmonix commented that this was for a lecture some months ago, and it was a prototype build not running on the new Rock band guitar or anything.

One thing that was fucking great though was the "ending" bonus where the entire band just got to rock out. Fucking awesome man.
Sold.
With the price tag on this thing, my interest now lives or dies with the tracklist. Anything less than a triple A lineup, and it's a pass.
I'll tell you, with the exception of this price tag, this thing looks near-impossible to not buy for me.

Rumor has it AC/DC is gonna be directly tied into this game. In a big way.

I would pre-order this shit if that turns out to be true.

If anything, they should have a schoolboy outfit as an option for the create a character stuff.

By the way, regarding the bundle/standalone question (brought up in the Guitar Hero thread)--it's been confirmed that the Guitar Hero 2 controller will work with Rock Band (albeit without the extra frills), so I assume the game will be available separately somehow, otherwise what would be the point?

Still possible the set won't be sold separately initially though. But I'm betting on a slightly discounted full set bundle, along with the game and peripherals available separately.
I got to say, the selling point for me on this is if you get bonus points for playing the drums one handed on "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

Motion sensors in the sticks so you activate star power by twirling!

"Make sure your wrist strap is firmly attached before playing the drums."

So you don't have to but a second guitar for your bass player.

Alexor posted this link in the Guitar Hero thread. Let me move my boner out of the way to cut and paste the best bits of the link:

Quote:
Call out the crowd! Vocalists can bring the crowd to their feet during Rock Band's freestyle vocal fill windows. Ad-lib your own words or shout to the crowd to raise the rock intensity of the performance.

Save your mates! Band mates can fail out of a song for poor performance, but the band still plays on. Rescue your failing mate by busting out signature moves and blistering solos to wow the crowd with showmanship.

The Who: Won't Get Fooled Again (master)
David Bowie: Suffragette City (master)
Blue Oyster Cult: Don't Fear the Reaper (master)
Nirvana: In Bloom (master)
Weezer: Say It Ain't So (master)

Drum Controller
An awesome foot pedal that emulates the resistance and speed of a real kick drum pedal
So awesome.

Your part should have only been "and the only prescription". You ruined the whole thing!

Harmonix has announced that it has contracted Silvio Dante will be involved in the music selection for Rock Band. Record Label execs could find themselves pressured by the likes of Christopher Moltisanti and Paulie Gualtieiri if they refuse having their tracks in the game.
I wasn't much interested in this, but Suffragette City? I'm there.
It's going to be a tough decision between this game and GHIII. I assume both will feature downloadable content. Why oh why did we need to see two fairly identical franchises? Desireable songs are going to be continuously split between the two.

Anyone play that freeware, computer version of Guitar Hero, Frets on Fire?

Well, most likely Harmonix wont be fucking us in the ass for it. GHIII still has some songs that I want to play, but it seems when Harmonix left they took the appreciation of the buyer with them.
Homina homina Rock Band info from EA's press conference:

-New downloadable content every week after release

-DLC will include single songs, multi-song packs and entire albums, starting with Who's Next

-"Enter Sandman" appears in retail version, more Metallica coming as DLC

GHIII is actually the underdog now.

wow.
Between Rock Band having "Who's Next" and Activision's release of GHII DLC that addressed none of the prior complaints, I think I'll officially note today as the day that I decided to make Rock Band my priority purchase over GHIII this fall.

SOLD. Although I'm not sure how they're going to do 'Baba O'Riley' with no keyboard peripheral.

I will buy a console just for this game. And also GTA IV, eventually.

Well the Guitar has buttons on both sides of the neck. Maybe you can use it like a keyboard. Or maybe they have a keyboard peripheral in the works for release at some point. Though I think I'd break my fingers attempting to play the beginning of Baba O'Riley.
They'll probably just use the guitar like GHII did for keyboard parts.
The indecision is tearing me apart. A choice must be made! I will bow to popular opinion and go with Rockband. I'm not sure what's wrong with GHIII's downloadable song scheme, but I'm sure that knowledgeable chewers (like Gravedigger) know best.

After playing GHII for a few hours, I'm kind of annoyed that my 360 is in the shop and I have no need for any games at the moment. Then again, I don't want to play with the controller until the wireless peripheral comes out, as I imagine that would suck all the fun out of the game.
Rock band just sold itself with Metallica. Can this shit come out on Wii now ?
The drums set:

Neat.
The songs so far:

*= cover

The Who -"Won't Get Fooled Again"
Mountain - "Mississippi Queen"*
David Bowie - "Suffragette City"
Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"*
Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
The Ramones - "Rockaway Beach”
Rush - "Tom Sawyer"*
Bon Jovi - "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Nirvana - "In Bloom"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Vasoline"
Weezer - "Say It Ain't So"
Foo Fighters - “Learn to Fly”
The Hives - "Main Offender"
The Strokes - "Reptilia"
Queens of the Stone Age - "Go With the Flow"

Holy shit...
GHIII is looking weaker and weaker in comparison to this game. While I still really want the new wireless guitar (especially since I never picked up GHII for the 360 so I'd need a guitar anyway) and songs like "My Name Is Jonas" and "Rock You Like A Hurricane" are appealing, most of the new additions seems really gimmicky (who was clamoring for rock battles and Slash?) while Rock Band seems to deliver customizable characters, a steady stream of DLC (the fact that they already know they'll be offering the entire album of Who's Next is amazing), and online play for every mode says that this is the game to get for the holiday season and GHIII can wait till the springtime.

That leaves only one question: which peripheral to get? I mean, they each have their own positives and negatives:

Guitar Pro: More buttons, it's the tried-and-true weapon of choice
Guitar Con: How much more can it offer that hasn't already been done in GH?

Drum Pro: May be able to actually learn drums.
Drum Con: Doesn't seem like you get the note variety and fun of one of the other peripherals.

Mic Pro: Great if you have no hand-eye coordination.
Mic Con: It's harder to hide the shame from eavesdropping roommates.

I can't wait to hear Russ' impressions from E3.
I only planned on getting the game-only version of GHIII anyway, so this isn't too much of a deal-breaker.
How much more can the Rock Band guitar offer over the GH guitar? Lots of effects knobs and the solo-only fret buttons (which I've wanted since the first game, so I'm extra excited for these). They've probably added other tweaks internally, too.

Hell yes. As long as they keep releasing GH as game-only for the PS2 then I'll keep buying them. But Rock Band is definitely the frontrunner. With the release of the Elite and now this, buying a 360 has DEFINITELY jumped up on my priority list.

Yeah. I have a Wii, but unless they announce it within here and Christmas, getting a 360 might be way more tempting now...
I'm considering Rock Band as a "guitar game" purchase--I don't have a 360 yet, so GHIII would cost me $100 anyway--and if I'm so moved to buy the other peripherals in the future, I can. The mic is showing up as a semi-reasonable $30 at Gamestop, at least.

Neither can I. Went to the Rock Band party last night, and was disappointed that they didn't have the game set out for attendees to play. (Became less disappointed when Eagles of Death Metal and Queens of the Stone Age played.)

There's a chunk of time this evening where people can go play at the hotel EA is in, though, so I'm going to head there at 6, after my Mass Effect meeting, and play until they force me to leave.
I hear a lot of you guys talk about it and some of you even cite it as basis for decision-making, but just how integral is DLC? I don't have the access to anything faster than Dial-Up so any sort of XBL account is out of the question (assuming of course that I haven't moved by the time I get a 360), so am I *really* missing out on something here or is it just a fancy extra that really doesn't make much of a difference?

I have no idea how important it is for Rock Band-esque video games, but I'm hooked on it big-time for the 360 in general.

I'm actually more excited to hear Fischer's impressions of Mass Effect. Joystiq's bandying about a November release date, which, I'm sorry, unacceptable. This sucker needs to be released asap.
Finally, a way to experience band drama without the ultra expensive band equipment. HUZZAH!
Microsoft themselves announced November at their press conference the other night. Sorry, Overlord.

I think DLC for a game like this can be a pretty big selling point. If it's utilitzed properly, it will basically be iTunes for Rock Band. I think it will be a while before it really gets to that point but if they're already talking about downloading entire albums, man, it's going to be good.*

Russ, even though you couldn't play, did the party provide any good, new information?

*Assuming, of course, the prices are reasonable.
