Are you smarter than a fourth grader?

Drudge linked to an article in a Maine newspaper written by fourth graders about the global climate crisis and how individuals can do their part to conserve energy and inform themselves on what needs to be done to save the world they will inherit. Some of their suggestions include:

Quote:
Change light bulbs to long lasting fluorescents and save 150
pounds of CO per year in every household.

Drive less and save 1 pound of CO for every fewer mile.

Save 2,400 pounds of CO by recycling plastics and paper.

Plant a tree -- it breathes over a ton of helpful gases per
lifetime.

Turn off any electrical items (TV, games, cell phones, lights,
etc.) when not in use to save 1,000 pounds of CO.

Be informed -- go to www.stopglobalwarming.org or
www.climatecrisis.net.

Stay informed -- Watch Planet Earth (kids) and An Inconvenient
Truth (families).
The response from readers sent forth by Drudge include such gems as:

Another shining example of why you should send your children to private schools!!

How disgraceful! After they are done with the poor children will they have any reason to live any longer? Take away any hope! Where have we seen this level of indoctrination before? Nazi Germany, USSR? What next? In their later lives they will be able to justify "elimination" of anyone that does not, and can not believe what they believe. This intolerance that is not based on scientific fact reminds me about the "fact" that all blacks are really not genetically the same as the rest of us that was spouted less than a century ago. I certainly hope that none of these children move to my neighborhood because there is going to be a price for all this indoctrination!

These poor kids probably think the world is flat also.

May I suggest you people stop brain-washing the kids? This story is REALLY creepy...It reminds me of indoctrination practices in the Soviet Union, Cuba, Red China and Nazi Germany. The authorities MUST investigate this abuse.

That last response from 'Kono' is special. Their rage was so intense they forgot how to form a sentence.

I love the second guy's use of the term "intolerance". Yes, if you believe in global warming it should now be considered...A hate crime! Gah!!!

Someone help me out with the global warming hoax thing. Why create such an elaboate hoax in the first place. There's no obvious financial gain from it. Gore might be making good scratch on the speaking circuit, but I don't see many climatologists living large like say, oil CEOs.

"This quarter's fake global warming profits are in the billions...A new record!"

And the "Scientists are only using global warming to get more grant money thing". Do they actually believe scientists created this hoax, to get more grant money, so they can keep studying...What they know is fake? Double gah!!!

It's so obvious that they are Big oil plants that it makes me sorry of the times I've criticised poor old Harry for publishing fake movie reviews.

They use the same talking points, i.e. talking about "brainwashed" kids and commie "indoctrination".

One of them plays the "crazy environmentalist" . Another tries to prove he's a liberal, comparing environmental awareness to racism. Cute.

I'm pretty sure Libsmasher, Tahoeman, Dick Adams, Commonsense and -of course- Kono share cubicles in some PR firm's offices.

I don't understand what all those respondents are objecting to. I can only guess they have some form of Tourette's.

Because if the Bible doesn't literally say that the world ends by global warming, they're not having none of it.

I didn't even know the Nazis had threaded fluorescent bulbs.

Any article with a message board that gets posted on Drudge turns into a cesspool immediately. Expect a protracted, useless debate about global warming or religion.

Wow, reading more of those talkback replies the level of retardation is really off the charts. Does the Drudge audience lean that far to the right?
so teaching kids how to conserve energy goes right up there with the brain washing of the German youth? wow...funny how some people are quick to run to calling someone a Nazi!

"what? you taught my son how to conserve energy and gas becasue of the effects on the envoriment?!" why that damn teacher must be one of those Nazie Commies!!'

some people need to fucking get a clear and wake up
post #17 of 26
Wow, those people are idiots.

Websites that use black backgrounds with white font cut way down on computer energy usage. Go CHUD!

And thus completes my politics forum post quota for the year...

You people are missing the point. This teacher is wasting precious time teaching the Econo-lies. This time could be spent teaching about the truth and salvation of lord baby Jesus and how he made the world. Fuck planting trees, crazy Gore-Tree cult...

The ignorant call it a hoax because of what it implies for unfettered industrialization. They can't accept the facts but argue that the solution lies in self-governance of industry, because that's obvious nonsense. So they have to pretend that it's all a massive hoax involving the US media and the world's academic institutions - no mention is made of why the rest of the world is in on the gag, I might add. They have to pretend that hundreds of scientists are either wrong in such subtle ways that the peer review process misses the errors but not ways so subtle that Fellows at libertarian think tanks with no expertise in the field can't catch it, or they have to pretend that all these scientists are willing to falsify their results for no apparent reason.

Or it's just because they're Bushies. If Bush says day is night, a not insignificant fraction of the US population will be found stumbling around in the sunshine. Bush says it, they believe it, that settles it.

Yes. This province runs on oil. If I wanted to back the side making the power grab, I'd be sneering at commies and investing heavily in oil.

If this were the case, the articles correcting the fraudulent work shouldn't be hard to find; all the major journals are available on the internet and abstracts are generally free of charge. Yet the people making this argument never ever provide them. Instead they cite con artists like the Oregon Institute. Then they get upset when you explain to them why they're wrong.

Then you make fun of them for sponging off mom and dad while preaching about libertarianism on message boards. But I digress.

You don't have to be a liberal to know who has the facts on their side in this debate, you just need really basic critical thinking skills, a memory, and an understanding of what constitutes a scientific authority and what constitutes a bunch of ideologues or industrialists with an axe to grind. There is no scientific debate to be had at the layman's level on this matter.

I wonder what these people must be like in their day to day lives

Man: "Honey I'm just driving down to the store"

Man: "Are you trying to kill 60 million jews, woman?"

That's very interesting.

I was listening to Stern on the way to work and he had Michael Moore as a guest. In the middle of the interview, Gary (the producer) played a voicemail from a woman who said she had been listening since blah blah but she was canceling Sirius (which she mispronounced) for having "that traitor Michael Moore" on. The next caller was from a guy who reminded Stern that the right wing punditocracy has incredible organization and that when things like this come up, mass emails are sent out instructing people to call in and say just what the voicemail lady said. It was interesting and had the ring of truth in light of how the woman sounded.

It's funny - one can smell a plant trying to generate movie "buzz" from a mile away, but it's so odd that there would be plants in these kinds of political and social issues as well. It's logical, but twisted.

I think it's just anothe iteration of the "contact your representative" form letter distributed by various political organizations. I think that the examples provided in the first post illustrate why organizations feel it's a good idea to provide their supporters with a form letter. Oof.
