Tomahawk "Anonymous" (06/19/2007)

I've never heard their other albums, but have been listening to the new one on their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/tomahawkofficial

I might be in rare company on this, but I'm liking it pretty well so far. For the most part, it's not a return to form if you're still craving Patton's more traditional vocals. But it's easier on the ears than something like Fantomas.

Does anyone like this band? I don't know if their other stuff is worth checking out or not.

Not a fan of Tomahawk really, but I've only listened to their first album.

This new album is a big departure. It leaked and I've been listening to it for the past couple of weeks. Their first 2 albums are more traditional hard rock stuff, but this new album sounds like Fantomas did a folky soundtrack for a Western Horror movie.

I believe this new one was done totally through mailing music back and forth, with the members never really getting together, and you can tell - it's more effects and simple compositions than an actual band getting together and playing. Plus, the bass player is no longer in the band and I don't see any plans to tour behind this. John Stanier is busy with Battles and Duane Denison has some new band, and Patton is always off doing something.

I'm digging the album, but wondering if it signals the end for these guys. I'm hoping not, since their first 2 albums were closer to Faith No More than anything else Patton's done since then.

Mit Gas is quite good. Not good: downloading a CD just because it leaked.

As with all Patton releases, I will still buy the album for the great packaging when it's released tomorrow. And yes, Mit Gas is excellent.
I really enjoyed the three tracks I listened to on Myspace last night. I will try to pick this up soon.
Tomahawk is the best thing Patton has done since the demise of Bungle and Faith No More. I can't wait for tomorrow.
From what I listened to it sounds great. Tomahawk seems to be getting better with each album.
I was hoping this would be on iTunes, but no. Oddly, they have the first album (no Mit Gas?) and an album by a Chinese metal band also called Tomahawk. I'm hating iTunes more and more each day.

I too was disappointed to not find this available on iTunes. And while we're on the topic, iTunes is back to jacking up the price for certain single disc releases to $11.99 or more. I assume their justification for this is usually a couple of exclusive bonus tracks. Lower quality for digital media at the price of an actual CD? No thanks. Apple needs to do the right thing with the Music Store by making every single disc album available in the iTunes Plus format at $9.99 a pop.

So when I saw iTunes wasn't selling Anonymous, I went out to find the disc in a store. Borders had it for $16.99, so I left without it. That's more than I'm willing to spend on a regular 1-disc new release - especially a digipak. I honestly can't stand that kind of packaging. What to do if the plastic breaks? Is it a ploy to get us to re-purchase the disc? Seriously, I never have seen the value in digipaks. Sure, they might be able to make the artwork prettier that way, but there's got to a way to do it and still allow for an easy fix when the case falls apart.

Actually, if you guys want the MP3s to Anonymous legally, just stop by emusic.com.

Ipecac distributes stuff through them, it's up there now so you won't have to sit through the iTunes delay, and it's all above the table, affordable and great for people who like indie music especially.

I was going to pick it up at Borders, but their prices can suck it. Emusic looks like a great alternative, and they give you 25 free downloads for signing up for the trial. Good to know they don't have draconian usage policies either. Thanks for the heads-up.

Actually $16.99 is an amazing price for an Ipecac release. Where I'm from, I'm lucky to get a Ipecac CD for under $30. I had to buy Mit Gas, twice, at $32 a pop. It's ridiculous. I'm going out of my mind because no store has Anonymous yet. I'm just waiting to see the retarded price the stores are going to put on it. The only upside is Isis' last album was only 21.99.

Kurt,

If you are going to try out emusic, there are still several sponsors that give you a 100 free downloads trial. Might as well get more:

Is it possible to browse eMusic without doing the trial thing? I'd like to see what they've got in their catalog. So they sell stuff in mp3 format that will easily convert and import into iTunes I guess? Also, do you get the album art when you make a purchase? I've got other questions too. Maybe I'll do the trial thing, but it's odd that they don't make all of this clear before you join.

Yeah, you can browse the catalog without signing up. On the splash page, there should be a "login" link or something like it. Just click that. It will take you to a log on screen. Up top, you'll see a Search field where you can start browsing or you can click the Browse tab. You'll be able to put anything you download from emusic into iTunes. Plus, all their downloads are DRM free. Album art is not available for download.

Emusic is a pretty great service, but you are right - they've never been the clearest company. Micah and I are pretty strong supporters. I've been using them for about two years. If you are a big fan of smaller bands - independent rock, hip-hop, singer-songwriter stuff, they have a lot to offer. But they have no relationship with the major labels, so you'll have to go elsewhere for that stuff.

I know this discussion is all over the place right now, but screw it...

I just buy too many CDs and DVDs to afford those higher prices. For 2 discs and up, of course I don't have an issue paying more for those. But for single disc CDs, I do my best to buy those at their onsale prices around the release date. If that doesn't happen, I'll go to eBay looking for a bargain.

Ok, so that's how you browse then. Thanks. Sucks that they don't offer digital booklets for albums, but eMusic looks pretty good overall. I especially like that their average bit rate is 192 kbps.

Yeah, I think they use Exact Audio Copy for all their stuff now. All of the newer mp3s should be VBR-encoded.

You can stream the whole record from their MySpace page.

I know, but it takes away buying it and listening to it for the first time. Thanks, anyways.

This album's a grower for me. I've been liking it more and more, and it's a good headphones album - lots of different background stuff going on. It seems like a good album to throw on when you're driving. At night. Through the desert.

And it shot right up to #158 on the Billboard chart!

Red Fox, Omaha Dance and Sun Dance are standouts so far... Anyone else liking this album?
I was sampling this album on iTunes yesterday and it sounds great. really, really interesting. I have to wait and buy it in the store because the cover is great. This thead led me to the emusic site, I plan on exploring that more when I get home from work.

I'm really digging it, but it's about as big a departure as well... every other disc Patton has done. He constantly paints himself in a bit of a corner as the "weird guy" then, with a band like Tomahawk he goes a bit more "normal" and closer to Faith No More "accessibility"(especially with the 2nd disc), then this.

I find it crazy for anyone to follow a particular Patton band now. Even if Tomahawk isn't technically a Patton thing, it seems like he takes everything over, and no 2 albums can be all too similar. I saw these guys open for Tool and Patton went out of his way to piss off the crowd, it was rather awesome, but...

It's got to be confusing to the "non-fans'. Not that I really care, but it much be difficult to build up a fanbase for a band when they change up their sound almost every fucking disc(Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk).
I wouldn't be surprised if Peeping Tom's second album was mostly death metal, and yeah, there's a good chance I'd dig it.

I bought Anonymous and already sorta wore it into the ground. The songs are great, but end up being less meaty than I originally thought, and now it has become a little bit background music. I still think it's really good though, and am glad I picked it up. My favorite packaging of the year at least.
