US crowd beats passenger to death

An angry Texas crowd has beaten and killed a 40-year-old car passenger after a driver injured a young girl near the site of a busy local festival.

Police said the driver of the car stopped to check on the health of the girl, said to be aged three or four.

But when the passenger got out to see how she was, he was set upon by a group of up to 20 people before being left lying in a car park, police said.

The girl was hit at low speed and was not seriously injured.

The incident happened near Austin, Texas, as crowd of between 2,000-3,000 people gathered for the annual Juneteenth festival, which commemorates the freeing of American slaves.

'Group mentality'

According to reports, the driver of the car hit the girl at a low speed while moving through a car park, and then stopped so his passenger could check on her condition.

But the angry crowd quickly turned on David Rivas Morales, 40, beating him before leaving him lying on the ground.

He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead soon afterwards. A preliminary autopsy listed "blunt force trauma" as the cause of death, the Associated Press reported.

The driver was able to leave the scene in his car.

"Mr Morales could have been assaulted by two to 20 folks," said Harold Piatt, from the Austin police department.

"It's that same crowd mindset of being one face in 1,000. Things get out of hand pretty quickly and people don't have the good sense to stop."

I hate it when my good sense kicks in and I leave the rifle at home.

Black assailants, hispanic dude right? Pretty messed up.

Man that's just a messed up story all around. Hope the little girl is o.k. and the people who beat the man to death are punished to the fullest extent of the law, whatever ethnicity they were. The messed up thing is they killed the PASSENGER not the driver. Way to go dipshits, you killed a guy who was just along for the ride.

Physically she'll probably be fine. The mob did far more damage to her than the car did.

I have a queezy feeling in my stomach from reading this.
Me too. This is basically a lynching. Is there even a chance that any one of those people will be brought to justice?

That story is about as disgusting as it gets.

So true.

Agreed.

Now, how the fuck do they figure out who to charge in this case? I guess they... don't?

Talk to witnesses?? I hope that there is still some semblance of law there.
Just today was I watching a similiar themed episode of CSI with some friends. That such a fucked up thing could possibly happen in todays society is astounding. Where's Judge Dredd when you need him?

"So, what did these guys look like?"
"Well, they were wearing cowboy hats, boots, and mustaches. Yeah... they were definitely wearing mustaches, I'm sure of it."

When this happens in the Middle East, it's proof that they're not civilized over there. Wonder if we'll enforce regime change on Texas?

That's a shitload of folks!

As a sidenote, what's the big deal of the death penalty in Texas? Why people are getting hung up on Texans killing each other is beyond me.
Too pressed for time to hang him, I suppose. Or maybe they thought doing that at a Freedom From Slavery festival would have been disrespectful and in bad taste.

Just crazy. Austin is generally incredibly laid back, and not just compared to the rest of Texas.* In the 25-odd years that I've lived here, we've never had anything remotely like this happen. Sure, there are murders like in any city, and we had the infamous "Yogurt Shop Murders," but no mob killings of innocents. Holy shit.

Despite what some seem to think Texas isn't like a Sergio Leone film. We have grass and indoor plumbing and even schools. This story however really makes all of that hard to believe.

I guess Austin isn't as liberal as I'd been led to believe.

Yes, I've had a lot of people defend Texas to me. "We're not like that, really, honestly, we're not". But stuff like this just keeps coming out of there. I'm thinking maybe all of you Texans who aren't retarded should just get out so we can wall the place off and pave over it.

There's hateful, bigoted, violent dipshits in every state. We're just one of the most populated states in the country, so, of course, proportionally there's a fuck ton more here than, say, Wisconsin.

You know the wife has been trying to convince me to move, mostly to get away from crazed family but you may be onto something.

Honestly the proportional argument bears a lot of truth, but I could do without the rednecks with I.Q.'s in the "How can they breath on their own" levels. There are a great deal of things I love about Texas, rednecks and this story are not in that group.

I lived in Texas 10 years, and when I moved out I was so happy. Then recently I saw David Byrne's True Stories, and truth be told, it kinda made me nostalgic for the state. It's not that terrible a place.
I'd rather live in Austin than Houston, but I'm locked in now. This was something I didn't expect to happen in Austin, though. It's really a far more pleasant place than much of the rest of the state.

It's not all population and proportions, though. California's got a fuck ton of people too, but their idiots don't take pride in being the biggest and loudest idiots in the country.

Clearly, you've never been to Wisconsin.

You do realize that not all Texans are just like George Bush, right?

Sure. Texas is a big place, and there has to be some diversity there. But I'm not convinced by the argument that you have the exact same amount and degree of assholishness everywhere. Places are different, and I don't think it's a coincidence that a modern-day equivalent of a lynching took place in a state that prides itself on shitkicking and is gung-ho for the death penalty. Then again, it did take place in Austin, the least Americuhn part of the state.

Does this prove that all Texans are backwards and barbaric? No. Is it possible that something like this could happen anywhere? Certainly. Am I surprised that when it actually happened, it was in Texas? Not particularly.

Californians' mob on man.

Yep that's right folks, shit like this DOES happen outside of Texas. Shocking, I know.

Yes there are some extremely loud and boisterous idiots in Texas, as there are elsewhere. Do they represent the rest of us that live here? I'd like to think not, but apparently they do. There are also some incredibly educated people in the state as well and they neither "kick shit" nor support the death penalty. But hey everything you see in movies and on t.v. about Texas is true.

What would have happened if someone had pulled a gun (astonishing in TX, I know) and had to pick off a few rioters to save that guy?

Who would be the bad guy? The rioters that were actively killing someone, or the guy with a gun?

Wouldn't that depend on your political affliation? I kid, I kid.

Say what you will about Texans, but at the Tastee Liquor on the corner of Grapetown Rd. and 1376 in Luckenbach, you can actually buy an IV bag pre-filled with red label. Everybody's a Somebody in Luckenbach (which, if true, also means that nobody is a somebody)!

All right, let me make this clear. I grew up in Kansas. I'm here now. Most of the people in the world who I'm close to did the same. These are, by and large, intelligent, tolerant, educated and surprisingly secular (considering they're mostly from Catholic backgrounds) people who live in a mid-sized city. They're from Kansas, they exist, and I know it as well as anyone. But as wonderful as our existence may be, it doesn't mean that Kansas on a macro level represents these qualities. We're known for being rural, religious and having a beef with evolution, and on the whole, that's not inaccurate. It's not that its impossible to defy the trend, but what we as a whole take pride in and how we choose to represent ourselves to the rest of the world is a siginificant factor in our state's identity.

I understand your point, but it seemed a bit condescending and as someone who lives in Texas and is at least mildly educated(BAS in Criminal Justice minor in PolySci) I felt the need to point out that not all of us are as pictured by the rest of the nation.

Don't get me wrong though, the story this thread is about is sickening no matter where it took place.
