From today's Washington Post:

The CIA will declassify hundreds of pages of long-secret records detailing some of the intelligence agency's worst illegal abuses -- the so-called "family jewels" documenting a quarter-century of overseas assassination attempts, domestic spying, kidnapping and infiltration of leftist groups from the 1950s to the 1970s, CIA Director Michael V. Hayden said yesterday.

The documents, to be publicly released next week, also include accounts of break-ins and theft, the agency's opening of private mail to and from China and the Soviet Union, wiretaps and surveillance of journalists, and a series of "unwitting" tests on U.S. civilians, including the use of drugs.

Why don't they just hurry up and tell us that they killed the Kennedy's.

Cut to Dick Cheney: "They used to keep records. That's so cute."

Hopefully these documents will confirm the long held suspicions of the Loch Ness Monster's involvement with MKULTRA.

Cue the simultaneous orgasm of thousands of conspiracy geeks. The internet is going to explode.

No kidding. They can keep these classified for all I care. It doesn't matter to me if the CIA had Jack Kennedy whacked because he was having an affair with Castro or not. It's Cheney that I want to see sweating under the hot lights.

The concept of the U.S. government releasing detailed accounts of its own misdeeds seems somewhat antiquarian.

Ah, but they're gonna leave the good stuff for the DVD's. Those bastards always do that!

Man.... Does this mean more Soderbergh movies?

They don't ever release information unless there's a distraction angle, these guys. What are they going to be doing while we're looking for UFOs?

I doubt that they will releases everything, like the drug experimentation in East Germany, as an example. Yes the USA was in bed with the East German government, and together they made such drugs as testosterone multipliers. Just don't ask how many people died though. .

I am, in fact, curious as to how many people died.

Somewhere between 1 and 10,000.

Yeah, I'm a little stumped by this. The US government doing something to make itself accountable and promote transparency? Am I in Bizarro-land?

My guess is that a lot of the pages will be blacked out to the point it looks like this:

in no way.................... acted

I wonder if the records will mostly focus on misdeeds that occurred during Democratic administrations.
