When he threw for the Sox, we used to call him Toolbelt because he always looked like the sort of guy who'd wear a belt to holster the TV remote and a Budweiser while he was nailing a chick from behind.

A decent closer, and the man had loads of personality.

This is a sad one. Outside of '93 and '97 he pitched for a lot of bad Giants teams but at least you knew if they were ahead in the 9th they'd come away with the win.

As intimidating as he appeared on the mound he always seemed like one of the most relaxed and mellow guys alive when he was interviewed.

Total shock. I had no idea Rod Beck could be killed.

Is Rod Beck
Really worth his own death thread?
His winnebago stuff in the minors was worthy but the guy probably killed himself in some way.
Buck O'Neil didn't even get his own death thread.

Never seen him pitch then I guess.

Fuck. I remember Beck fondly. The Sox were in dark times then, but they always managed to make games really interesting. Beck was a part of that. What's interesting to me is that based on my limited knowledge of the dude, I can't say I'm surprised by this.

Does Paris deserve 7 threads a day?

My Grandpa could not stand this man when he was the closer for the Cubs in 98. "Oh no, they're bringing in Beck" has become somewhat of a running joke and a way of paying tribute to my Grandpa.

I was actually doing research and had started writing a script fictionalizing Beck in Spring Training with the Giants.

Thank you for the memories based on frustration regarding your pitching performance. Truly, Rod Beck is a legend.

Beck was one of those guys who was pretty much impossible to dislike, even if he wasn't throwing well.

RIP, Shooter.
