I caved... and bought a PS3

There was really no reason for it except a hole burning in my pocket. My roommate has a 360, and I love it, just bought Dirt for it (which is pretty slick, not sure why no one here is talking about it). But I want the Darkness and I hear it has a couple cool little extra features on PS3. I was gonna buy one in the next couple months anyway, and already have Planet Earth on Bluray in anticipation for it so I figured fuck it, why not. Price probably won't drop until October at the earliest anyway.

So a couple first impressions. I'm a fan of the Dual-Shock, so I dig the Six-Axis. My TV only does 480p and 1080i, however, Motostorm and Resistance look gorgeous. I was expecting to be underwhelmed, but I'm actually impressed. I can't imagine how much better they'll look in 1080i. Really, it's almost a non issue on my 52-inch projection HD.

Movies look un-freaking-real in Blu-Ray, and the web browser is pretty sweet.

I would tell you how the demos for Gran Turismo and Gaiden are, however, I was fucked up on Xanax last night when I set up my online account and for the life of me can't remember my password. Apparently I have to wait for a Sony technician to call me tomorrow to reset it.

Btw, does anyone know if you can bring up the console menu a la 360 without quitting the game?
I really want a PS3 myself and am glad to hear your favorable impressions.

1080P on a PS3 is amazing. But so is 1080i.

You can set the PS3 to upconvert all of your normal DVDs to High Definition as well. Its video chips are pretty amazing.

Also, if you have a PSP, you can stream all of the music and movies that you rip to your PS3 through it, anywhere in the world. Sweet shit.

You can't bring up the Cross Media Bar during a game yet. Rumor has it that you will be able to access it without quiting a game in a later firmware update. Btw welcome to our small club.

you say it up-converts my DVDs? I must investigate at once!
I didn't know about the upconverting either. Damn, that makes me more tempted than I was, which wasn't very, really. The Blu-Ray capability is really the only reason I want one at all. With exclusives becoming more of a rarity, it certainly isn't looking like that's going to be a factor.

But if it does Blu-Ray and upconverting, well now I'm thinking seriously. I just won't be playing games on the thing.

I swear I saw a video somewhere before its release of a guy bringing up the media bar in-game. They'd better have this in the works. On another note, one other thing I like is that the controllers are re-chargeable. My house spent a lot of time scouring for AA batteries last year.

You can access it while playing music or videos from the hard drive but you can't access it in game yet.

Don't forget the Collector's Edition of Stranglehold, which on the PS3 version includes the movie Hard-Boiled in HD.

The DVD up-scaling works pretty well. The PS2 up-scaling is pretty fucking great.

I've been really enjoying the PS3. It's nice to not worry every time I turn the thing on.

And it's shiny.

Well now that's how you do a fucking collector's edition, very cool.

ironically enough, my roommates 360 just died while playing Dirt and now won't eject.

Upscaling rocks, yes sir. Although, and I could be wrong and just totally suck, but I think it throws off the timing in some stuff, what with the lag and all. I threw in Shadow Hearts (the original, not the superior sequel) and while it looks a damn sight better, the timing on the judgment ring seems just a bit...off. Like I'm hitting the button NOW and it occurs on screen...NOW. But, it could be all in my head and I just have no reflexes any more. But I'll tell you what...the Incredibles looked like a fucking dream upscaled.
Jesus, any more upscaling on Pixar movies and you'll see the goddamn code.

Congratulations. With your new purchase, you've entered an elite group of society that no longer has six hundred dollars.

You know those things attract every molecule of dust within a five-mile radius, right? After a month, those fuckers have fur.

The first halfway decent reason to purchase a PS3. But is Stranglehold going to suck or what?

I'm gonna be watching this thread closely, because I've been recently tempted to purchase a PS3.

God help me.

I suppose you'd need something to do while waiting for a game to come out.
If it doesn't breakdown as easily as the 360 does, this may be a wise purchase after all.
Still waiting for the price to drop or for the bigger hard drive to come out before bringing back my 20gb. I'll say it's been pretty disappointing as a game system so far. I only own Resistance and haven't played it for like 6 months. The cable box is in another room, so unless I have the WiFi one I can't get online (stupidest move having the 20gb model.)
The machine appears to be top-notch and only empties your bank account up-front as opposed to playing warranty roulette, but because there's nothing "must have," I'm waiting until November and the price drop (which is based on my own speculation).

That's cool, Judd. I hope the system works well for you. My PSP love has been rekindled of late and I confess that the PS3 is looking more attractive as a result of all the interconnectivity. It's just the games still aren't there for me yet.

Now for a moment of obligatory negativity: The Darkness? The FREAKING Darkness? That sold you on a $600 console?

My world no longer makes sense.

It was the straw that broke the camel's back. I was set to buy one this summer anyway to snatch up Gaiden Sigma and a couple other games + I recently purchased Planet Earth on Blu-Ray being that it was at the best price I'd ever find it and knowing I was gonna grab a PS3 as soon as my roommate moved out in August (along with his 360). I want The Darkness and figured why buy another game for a console that I don't own?

I agree that there isn't shit out for the console thus far. Then again I feel pretty much the same about the 360. Besides Gears of War and Forza there's not a single game I'd want for the 360 that I couldn't purchase for the PS3. The bottom line is if you already have a 360 PS3 isn't worth it yet (that is, unless you really want a blu-ray player).

I don't have a 360, and as much of a gamer as I am I'm much more the cinephile... so for me it was a pretty easy choice (Blu-ray is soooooo worth the extra $100). The only thing that's going to make me regret my purchase is Halo 3. But hey, maybe I can convince my next roommate to splurge on an Xbox.

Mass Effect will sadly not be on this system.

Will Bioshock?

Nothing's been announced yet regarding a PS3 Bioshock. It will almost certainly happen though.

More Impressions...

for those of you who are also curious about this mysterious appliance (I had only played one before purchasing mine).

-I've been playing a lot of Dirt on the 360 lately, and it's the best looking racer I've ever played... but Motorstorm is waaay more fun, and not too shabby looking itself. You can turn the six-axis tilt on or off during a race, I played with it a little and was surprised at how responsive it was but found it difficult and quickly reverted back to the standard set-up. I'm sure I'll experiment more in the coming days. Haven't had the chance to play online yet.

-I'm not very far into Resistance but the impression I get is that it's a polished and above average FPS without anything truly special to say for it. Again, haven't yet played online.

-The monolith does not like my iPod. It reads that the iPod is there sure, but doesn't list any tracks. A little sleuthing online showed me how to copy my iPod tracks to the hard-drive; it's easy enough, but this shouldn't be an issue. Why isn’t it plug-and-play? Worse yet, there doesn’t seem to be a jukebox of any kind or a way to make playlists for the music I’ve copied onto the hard drive. I can only play them by artist, album or song name. I feel like I must simply be overlooking something but really it’s just a big oversight on Sony’s part. Hopefully a future software update will do something about this.

-Sony ought to explain somewhere exactly what each DVD upscaling option offers and which settings are best given one’s setup

-the Ninja Gaiden Sigma is pretty, but so was the Xbox version. Not seeing any reason why I shouldn’t wait to pick this one up in the bargain bin.

Sony rushed to get the PS3 on store shelves and it shows even 7 months after its debut. The good thing is that it seems to me like Sony made sure to get the hardware right, that part doesn’t feel rushed at all. It hums along at a whisper relative to the 360, plays DVDs and Blu-Ray like a champ and the games are every bit as good (or bad) looking as the 360’s if not better. The machine itself appears rock solid. In fact, when I declined to spend an extra $70 on a an extended warranty the EB clerk mentioned that I’ll probably be alright without out it since in his experience he hadn’t yet seen anyone bring theirs in (yea, I know it’s an EB employee).

But this thing really needs a few key software updates in order to qualify as offering everything the 360 does and more.

Question: my enormovision, like yours, supports 480p and 1080i. I've read that the PS3 supports 480p, 720p, and 1080p. Does that mean I'd have to use it in 480p mode? Does that mean that my picture would be relatively sucky; and that I'd be better off going with an X-Box 360, which supports 1080i?

PS3 supports all current HD outputs, including 1080i. From what I understand the problems with the PS3 and our TVs stem from several of PS3's early games maxing out at 720p. Since our TV's don't support 720p, games like Resistance and Motorstorm (that support 480p and 720p but not 1080i) will display in 480p. I have to say though, when booting those games up for the first time I was expecting a lot worse than what I got. Resistance and Motorstorm look fantastic even in 480p.

It's another problem Sony still needs to fix but I'm pretty sure every release from here on out supports 1080i. Given my setup that's one of the things I was waiting for before I went out and bought one.

Blu-ray plays in 1080i by default I believe.

On another note... Gran Turismo HD Concept better be just what they say it is (an upgrade of GT4) and not indicative of a true sequel. Me no likey.
Thanks, Judd. You've just expanded my options.

God I want one of these....but sadly....i'm unable to afford dropping 600 dollars on a video game system at this point in time.

Of course, I have a 360 and a Wii, and my amp only has so many slots. Sorry, Sony.

Kotaku is reporting that the 60GB PS3 is dropping to $499 on July 12th. Man.
Interesting if true. Judd can hopefully pricematch with his store.

I'm still on the fence myself. I mean, I didn't buy it when they LAUNCHED with a $500 model, and I'm someone who didn't care about the WiFi or media readers. I think $400 might be the point where I cave.
Yup, price cut!

Btw, I have to wonder if they honestly expect people to believe that they're passing the savings onto the customer, as if manufacturing the PS3 got real cheap all of a sudden within the past few months.
Fastest price drop I've ever seen.
This would be better news if the system wasn't hemorrhaging exclusives by the fucking minute.

Actually the Xbox and Gamecube both had price drops six months after launch. This generation has been exceptionally stingy with price cuts--the 360 has lasted even longer than the PS2 without a price drop, and I wouldn't expect the Wii to drop until at least six months after supply meets demand in, like, 2011.

Better yet, in Europe the Xbox had its first price cut barely two months after release (Microsoft softened the blow for early adopters by offering them two free games and a pad). And the GC had its price slashed even before launch (from the announced 250 to 200).
$500 is still a lot for a console, maybe I'm too cheap, but even at $400 I'd have to think about it really hard.
Well looks like July 12th will be the day I finally switch the 20gb for the 60gb.
