Yo Gabba Gabba!

I'll admit that I'm a geeky man-child, but I was reading a FOUNTAIN thread (to give me an alibi) this morning while my daughter was watching her Noggin channel (preschool stuff) and I caught a clip featuring a colorful bunch of rubber-suited monsters and a funky DJ (host DJ Lance Rock) having a breakdance-athon. Apparently there's a new show coming out called Yo Gabba Gabba that looks like a cross between Sid & Marty Krofft/Kaiju Big Battel and Breakin/Beat Street... Or a non-parody version of WONDER SHOWZEN.

It features hip hop (Biz Markie) and some other fun groups (Aquabats, love those guys) with an aesthetic of urban-retro and Asian vinyl (Paul Frank's Julius the Monkey guest stars). I'm certainly not the target demographic (being that it's preschool edutainment), but I find the overall concept/design/style interesting and appealing to my artistic sensibilities. Now if those suited characters would only start duking it out.

If the style's your cup of tea... other Urban-Retro/Asian Vinyl (for a reference point):

That actually seems really cool, makes me wish i had kids (although not really). I'm a big product of the culture they seem to be espousing and if i had kids this is the sort of programming i'd want them to watch, instead of calming toy plane or whatever shows are aimed at this age group.

Yeesh. That orange thing reminds me of Ripoll's Chud Exchange gift from Bele.

Yeah, pretty ironic that the orange studded dildo character would also be a... CYCLOPS!

I was gonna say "fangs", but yeah, a cyclopic beast is a bit coincidental as well.

Holy crap. I was just watching Noggin with my son Phineas and a Yo Gabba Gabba video cameon.

This is gotta be the coolest pre-school show ever made. I can't wait until August.

sometimes I wonder how high the adult creators behind these kids shows have to be when they make this stuff up.

not to knock it, because it sounds like a great idea for a kids show, but seriously were these guys on mushrooms?

Tony Hawk and Elijah Wood= http://youtube.com/watch?v=LYsFo6iJFGs
Party in my Tummy= http://youtube.com/watch?v=qcUtNF3ppig So. Yummy... er... Disturbing.

"Gabba" is apparently hardcore techno music.

OK. I've only seen the Party in my Tummy commerical (my daughter watches a lot of Noggin, but we mostly DVR and playback JBMS and The Backyardigains).

That song is terrible. The show looks terrible. Like TellyTubbies terrible. However, your rundown of what's to come makes it appear worth checking out.

ETA: If you have kids, Noggin is the best. Commercial Free edutainment... so I don't feel too guilty plopping my kid in front of the TV while she's chows down, etc.

I'm a big aquabats fan so I'll check this out, even though I'm not two.

They'll have to remix it before it catches on at the clubs.

I think the art direction/design/aesthetic puts it way above Teletubbies.

Watched the first episode yesterday and my son loved it. Phin (my son) really loved the Elijah Woods dance.

Its a very neat show, and with the announcement yesterday that Noggin will become its own channel separate from the N... it will be great to see a 24 hour Noggin network.

I gotta say, this show, even for kids, is pretty awful. I get that repetition is important but for the love of god... Most of the songs are flat-out annoying especially when compared to stuff that's on JBMS and The Backyardigans.

I started to put it on for my 22 month old daughter a couple of weeks ago and she emphatically said "No!" when it started up.

Seems silly to whine about a kid's show but I have to watch this crap too, ya know?

24 hour Noggin eh? I always found it an odd transition at 6PM, going from Noggin to the 'N'.

bumping this because honestly, this is one of the most entertaining shows on tv. Great music every episode, with some really awesome guests playing original music. And jesus it's colorful. Honestly wish I had a show like this when I was younger.

totally not baked while writing and watching this.

I'm taking my kids to see Yo Gabba Gabba Live in December. It's a great show.

The sad white version of Muno is fucking creepy, though.

Ha! I don't know anyone who's kids actually watch this. It's mainly something college stoners get a kick out of in my neck of the woods.

The only reason I know about this is because it's the favorite show of every baby I am peripherally acquainted with.

I'm a stay-at-home mommy (woo, woo) and YGG keeps both my daughter and me entertained. There's a ton of shit they sneak in their for grown-ups (or aybe i'm just reaching)- like in the Dress-Up episode, DJ Lance just happens to dress up as a sherriff named "Bart." Am I the only one who cracked up at that?
