This Optical Illusion is Tripping Me Out

Damn. At first I thought everyone was nuts. I saw it spinning clockwise, then I followed the advice and followed the shadow, for no apparent reason it looked like it was going counter-clockwise. I've switched back and forth several times since, this is plain wacko.

I can jumpstart the switch by taking my hand and covering the top half of her body.
I even opened the gif in Imageready, and it's... okay, this is nuts.
It took me so long to get my brain to see her spinning clockwise again that I started to believe that she had never been spinning in that direction to begin with. Freaky.

Edit- You sure that GIf isn't fucking with us and actually does gradually switch directions? My brain is melting.
Trippy. But once you get the hang of it it's neat switching directions easily.
I didn't know what you guys were on at first. Of course she's going clockwise, what the hell are you...oh, there it goes. Weird.

The gif is kosher.

Now that I've stared at it long enough while showing a few other people, I can also switch it pretty easily.

I opened the gif and there's only one spin.
Yeah, I also opened it up to look at the individual frames. Trippy, indeed.

Here's a simple one that continues to bother me:

Like it or not, Squares A and B are exactly the same shade of gray.

Save it to disk and use MS Paint's or PhotoShop's paint eye dropper to prove it.

More info on how that can be here: http://web.mit.edu/persci/people/ade...sion.html?gray

Ow! My brain!
I see no direction change.
When the hell do I get to see the goddamn sailboat?!
man, that optical illusion has great tits.
It looks like she's traveling in the same direction to me.

That and the fact that the model has nipples.
Are you staring at it?

Oh, of course you are.
Is that even SUPPOSED to be an optical illusion? She's obviously just moving one direction.
It is, you can make her spin either way. It's a great optical illusion. My computer slowed down a bit and that helped me "spin" her the other way, not sure how to explain how to make it happen ...
Cover her top half so you only see legs then you'll suddenly notice a shift in direction.
Yeah, it takes a little while but she definitely starts spinning in the other direction. After looking at it long enough you can switch it by staring at certain parts of her body(not her tits).
I'm still seeing one direction.
Stare and follow the shadow of her outstretched circling foot for 5-10 seconds, and then shift your focus to the shadow of her inner foot. That flips it on demand for me, but then I had to close the photo and look at it again a few minutes later to get it back spinning clockwise again.

Yeah, if you stare at it long enough and defocus (kinda like it was a Magic Eye), you'll see them as the exact same shade. It's pretty cool actually.

That's what works for me. So bizarre. I can't figure out how it happens and I want to know DAMMIT!
I imagine it has something to do with her spiral-esque spinning and the the point where there is no gap between her legs, just black.
Don't know if it's been mentioned before, but if you stare at her shadow you can get it spinning the other way pretty easily.
Oh, this is bull.... hey!

Yeah, if you scroll down so you can only see the legs, suddenly she's spinning clockwise. But the shadow is definitely spinning anti clockwise.

I can do it that way too, but for me its not easier. I have to stare a bit longer.

On another note, I'm actually psyched that I can see this. I've never in my whole life ever been able to see the pictures in stereograms.
It's the same thing as Crow on MST3K. You can look at him and he can either be facing the screen or facing you.

I really thought it was an April Fool's type prank. Then I covered the top half of her body, and lo and behold she spun the other way. I then couldn't get it back to the original direction without closing it down and re-opening a few minutes later. If someone can explain how this works, I'd love to hear it; I can't find an explanation on-line.

Really? I just look away from the computer and then look back. That usually does it for me.

I'm actually at the point where I can get her to switch back and forth after just a few rotations. I'd love to do it after a single one and see if I can get her to just go side to side.

Thanks for posting this. It's a great way to waste some time.

Because it's only a silouette, it's the exact same whether or her foot is pointing right at you or right away from you. Therefore, your brain sees her "spin" one way, but it's just as likely to see her "spin" another, so if you distract yourself or look away or do womething that diverts your attention, you can see her "spin" the other way.
I was looking at this earlier and I don't see the switching. It was spinning in one direction-- counter-clockwise.

It's like a Necker Cube with nipples.

You beat me to it. That's exactly what I was thinking when I looked at it.

Incidentally, there's an MST3K book that briefly talks about the Crow illusion with a shot of his silhouette next to a Necker Cube for reference. I always liked that.

That's the one. Thanks!

I'm sure this is an accurate explanation, but I have no idea what it means.

Interesting. What I'd like to know is why is it always spinning clockwise when I first look at it and then it turns counter-clockwise. Why not the other way around?

Yeah, that happens to me too. Weird.

If you keep your eyes near the bottom of the screen, at the area between her feet and the shadow, you can make the image seem to swing back and forth; facing you (or away from you), swinging her foot to the edge of the screen, then swinging it back to the other egde, then back again ad infinitum. Once you focus on her pelvic region you compromise this perspective, because then the pivot leg switches from left to right, but if you maintain focus on the feet you maintain the illusion. I think it's the pelvis that primarily determines which way you think she's moving.

In other words, when she's turning clockwise, she pivots on her left leg; when rotating counter-clockwise, she pivots on her right leg. If you look at the legs/pelvis, you'll see one leg as the constant pivot point. By moving your focus down to the feet/shadow, you're not focusing on which leg is the pivot point, so your brain is free to change it.
OK, I'm nauseous and can still only get her to spin clockwise (but elCapitan is right about her shadow).

Dammit, this is pissing me off. I can get the shadow to change directions no problem, and if I focus just on her foot I can get it to swing back and forth with the shadow, but if I look any higher she's only spinning clockwise. This is probably the end of my dream of becoming an airline pilot.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. She is spinning in one...

Oh.

Holy Shit.

Never mind.
I tried it again today using all of the methods. She's still moving in one direction.

Are you sure you guys aren't all drunk?

Really? Even covering her pelvis?

It really is just a Jedi mind trick. Tell yourself she's spinning the other way while focusing on the pivot leg/shadow and she will. It's all mental.

It's all in the outstretched foot. Pick the side of her where the foot is coming toward you -- then stare at that spot while the foot moves in and out of it til the foot's going away from you, instead.

Once you get that down, start making her do figure-eights.

That only makes it seem more obvious to me.
Think of her swinging foot as a pendulum, moving left and right.
I will not drink the juice!
How about this -- stare at the outstretched knee, and when you "see" it crossing in front of the other, try to see it crossing behind the other.

I'm thinking it's really about how your mind forces unseen borders of surfaces crossing over each other, when all we really have to go by is a single point moving where the two leg-shapes are constantly splitting and merging, first down one side then down the other. (Not counting all the confusion the arms are causing.)

For half the turn, one leg's in front of the other. One way of seeing the "other direction" would be a matter of mentally flipping which leg is in front. Redraw the imaginary lines as they pass by each other, giving the other leg "dominance." And, thighs are nicer to look at than feet. For advanced starers, the nipples.

Now, off to get all drunk.

Oh, sure, this one I get in like 5 seconds, but that damn coffee bean puzzle in the other thread nearly wasted my morning.
