Discontinued Soda

Thread Starter
Boring days at work can send your mind wandering to some stupid places. I got to thinking about all the weird soda that was floating around 10 or so years ago that never took hold. And I'm not even a soda-drinker anymore.

Storm was easily my favorite, like a way more carbonated, way more sugar-filled Sprite. I thought it was nationally distributed but Wiki has it released in test markets.

Clear Pepsi has to be the strangest. I remember it tasting like a bathroom air freshener.

Jamba...was it Jamba? The black-as-night shit with the cougar on the label? That shit was Penzoil.

I know there's more.

And what ever happened to Fruitopia?
I, for one, liked Crystal Pepsi and was sad to see it go. It had such a unique taste, but I must preface this with the fact that I was really young when it was introduced so I also liked shit like Hi-C and Gushers.

Jamba was so disgusting, but it was one of the first 'energy drinks' that was introduced that advertised using shit like guarana.
OK Soda! I didn't really lament its passing, as it was basically a suicide of orange, sprite, coke and root beer (or something like that).
There was this great one in the UK in the late 80's called Quattro that I loved. It only lasted a couple of years I think
post #5 of 88
Is Ruby Red Squirt still made?

My research was poor: Fruitopia was put to a stop by Coca-Cola in '01. Curiously, the label design has been transferred to some kind of social networking site or something. But no more juice, sadly.

Tab has also been brought back to life, I see.
For years I thought Vernor's was discontinued, but to my surprise I saw some for sale the other day.

Didn't buy any, but I assumed it still tasted terrible.

HOLY SHIT. I hit the mother load:

Soda Finder

Behold. Ruby Red Squirt: $20 per 12 pack.

Also, correcting: It's Josta, not Jamba. $175 for a 6 pack.

Pretty sure that Tab never officially went away.

Josta, Jamba, it's all shit no matter the name. I wouldn't pay $1.75 for a six pack, let alone $175.

Yeah, that stuff tastes awful. It was everywhere when I was living in Michigan, but I'd rather get an enema with it than drink it.

Then don't go here: Save Josta

He's been petitioning for 8 years now.

I love Soda Finder.

I love going there to see what some areas have a bitch of a time finding and what others have plenty in stock.

I've only ordered DNL and Grape Nehi off the site before. They're pretty good when it comes to delivery and nothing tastes flat.
Apparently Vault Red Blitz (which seems to be a rip off of Mountain Dew Code Red) is the goto drink for those jonesing for Josta.

And on the subject of Vault, remember Surge? Coke pretty much rebottles that as Vault now right?
Except Vault tastes a lot better than Surge did. The idea is the same though.

The Best Cola Ever.

Pour out a little bit of whatever pisswater you're drinking at the moment right there on the floor in front of your computer and give it up for Royal Crown Draft Cola, the pinnacle of the art of cola, RIP. Back in the 90s the RC Cola people came out with this premium cola. Only sugar, no corn syrup was used, and no cans, only glass bottles. It didn't taste even remotely like RC Cola, or any other cola for that matter. Very rich flavor, and sweet without being overly sweet - the ingredients used were clearly high grade. It goes without saying that it flopped in the marketplace - some things are too good to last. The internet hints that it might still be available in France and in Australia & New Zealand. Lucky bastards.
Surge and Josta are two of the foulest things I've ever had in my mouth, and I've guzzled room-temperature tall cans of Mt. Everest malt liquor. That rancid shit tastes kind of like St. Ides with pepper in it, but that still beats the hell out of Josta, which tastes a little like getting raped in the mouth by the Predator might theoretically taste. To each their own, may it bring you all the happiness you would hope for... but wow, I didn't know Surge and Josta had this many fans.
haven't seen this stuff in years and years

My brother brought me a Jolt home a few months ago. Not exactly sure where he got it, but I'm sure it was a Spanish convenience store in the depths of town. Still a refreshing beverage.

Now Shasta... That tasted about as bad as it sounds.

I remember that stuff. A wee bit too much caffeine for my liking (although it tasted fine).
fruitopia still exists (and is strangely still popular) here in canada. weird.
Pepsi Blue. Why Pepsi Blue? I dunno, but the commercials lead me to believe it was for monks into nu-metal. Or something.

I came to this thread to post about this very same soda. RC Draft was fantastic, easily the best cola I've ever tasted. I should just contact RC and beg them to sell me a case.
I can find Ruby Red Squirt, Jolt, Shasta, Diet Mountain Dew Code Red and all varieties of Vault at my local groceries stores as we speak. Why anyone would pay $14 for a 12-pack of Squirt online is beyond me.

The Blue and Crystal Pepsi's were disgusting. There was also a weird 7-Up a couple years ago...some upside down something or other, dn-7 it might've been called. Is Mellow Yellow still around? Jim Varney used to do Mellow Yellow commercials. Surge wasn't THAT bad.

When I was a child my father worked for Pepsi, and would always bring home weird, hard to find things like when Slice experimented with Strawberry and Watermelon - and also discontinued favorites like Pepsi-Free and Pepsi-Light, which still might be available at some backwoods places.

The Tab energy drink isn't too bad, nor are the Mountain Dew energy drinks. Better than Red Bull and Monster at least.

I actually used to have a special Pepsi-Logo'd Optimus Prime toy as part of a mid-80's ad campaign....

I remember one winter, two or three years ago there was "Holiday Spice Pepsi" and this Pepsi had a reddish tint and had this sort of cinnamon kick to to stuff. The only other reason why I remember was that it was being sold really cheaply and for a man in college it fit the bill.

Damn, I just got reminded one of these days I've gots to get myself a case of Mexican Pepsi.

And I do remember Dnl. Never drank the stuff but it the ads featured a sass-talking Leprachun who always said 'Who wants a Dnl?"

And who here remembers Sprite Remix?
It looks like Diet Pepsi MAX just hit our shores.

And boy does it suck. I hate it when companies try their hardest to make the Diet and Regular versions try and taste the same.

The reason I love Diet sodas is their clearly distinctive taste from the originals. Which feel like I'm gulping down molasses.

??? I can't follow you there.

Does anyone remember Like Cola? I think it was one of the first caffeine free colas.
I think he's trying to say is that he likes the taste of Diet Soda and doesn't want it to taste like some weak version of regular.

I think anyway.
According to Wikipedia it's still a going concern, but I haven't seen a Nehi soda in years. Their grape soda was nectar of the gods.
I love how Diet's, at least Pepsi, has a crisper taste. It's not as thick and heavy. Plus....for some weird reason everytime I drank the originals, Coke or Pepsi, I physically hurt. Like, I'd feel horribly drained and sluggish. The Diets don't cause that.

Am I sick? Probably.

Hmm, I confused some of you. Or my way with words aint so hot right now.

Simply: I hate regular versions. I like Diet versions because they're not as disguisting.

Shit, I remember seeing bottles of Nehi being sold at the supermarket like 10-15 years ago. Never drank the stuff though.
I can't believe all the ragging on Josta. It was packed to the gills with Guarana, an alleged herbal sexual stimulant. Also, Guarana is what plants crave.

To be fair the the people doing the ragging, I never tasted it. I just saw an opening for an idiocracy joke and ran with it.

I agree with the minority "Diet" soda fans, especially the electrocharged carbonation in Diet Pepsi. The regular stuff is just so damn sweet.

After discovering beer, I really haven't bothered with soda too much any more. But the first sip from a fresh, cold can of Diet Pepsi feels like sticking your tounge in a bug zapper. I like that a lot.

The shit tasted like Pennzoil, black liquorice and cougar blood, seemingly with only a tad of carbonation. It's awful for anyone who isn't in 8th grade.

And it never got my dick hard.

Does anybody have any of that soda in a copious supply?

I look at the prices that they ask for Barq's Red Cream and I find it ridiculous.
Isn't Surge just Mellow Yellow now?
No, Surge is like the crack-addicted son of Sprite.
We have pineapple-flavoured Crush here. Revolting stuff, but I hear it's mostly just available in Newfoundland.

Anyone remember the old A&W Cream Soda? Delicious amber-coloured classic cream soda, not the clear candy-tasting stuff sold under that name now.
I miss Nugrape and Vanilla Barqs was better than sex.

This place,

http://www.dublindrpepper.com/

Is one of the original Dr. Pepper botteling plants, you can order 24packs of the Old Formula DP, with Sugar instead of HFCS.. If you like Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb this is perfect for you.

Also most Roberto's and Fausto's Taco Shops sell Mexican Coke here in Las Vegas so they might in your area, thats some good shit.

Vernors is hell in a can.

On the other hand, my father used to grab a couple cases before leaving Michigan. I imagine there are a few cans still lying around in my parents' garage.
Well, it seems like they've got the plot for a SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT reboot–have 'em trucking bootleg loads of PIBB XTRA. Looks like some turkeys will pay 12 bucks a twelve pack.

Remember it? We had a 12-pack of it in our fridge a week ago. Same thing with Squirt -- if that guy is charging twelve bucks for a twelve pack, I'm heading down to Publix where they're charging $11 for 4 twelve packs and set up my retirement.
Jolt is still around, and they have several new flavors too and repackaged as energy drinks. I've only been able to find them at a local convenience store, though.

I'll second OK Cola. It didn't taste all that great, but any can of soda which dons the artwork of Dan Clowes is cool with me. Wish I still had a few empty cans kicking around.
When the Kwik-E-Marts open up, I am gonna be interested in trying Buzz Cola. I haven't had a soda in 15 months (gave it up trying to lose weight), but I will have a Buzz Cola.
Fresca was gone for a year or so around these parts, but I'm glad they brought it back. Not sure if that was a nationwide thing or not, but thank the gods, I love that shit.

I'd certainly give it a try if it made a comeback, but frankly I'd be more interested in a Crown Royal Draft Cola.

I loved Surge. Vault doesn't cut it.

Anyone remember Citra? Another short-lived Coke product, came out at about the same time as Surge. Used to buy a bottle of Citra and a bag of Funyuns every day. Ah.

Actually, googling the stuff, turns out it was repackaged i n 04 as Fanta Citrus. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
