Dark Shadows

I heard about this show recently on This American Life. Seems like the final DVDs (which, ironically, consist of the first season) are coming out soon and I might queue them. Is it worth the investment? Is it "campy" or is it actually quality tv? Or both?

DS was the best daytime soap involving vampires, ghost, werewolves, ghouls, and time travel in the history of television.

And since Port Charles dabbled heavily in vampires and Passions spent most of the series dealing in dark magic and animated dolls, that's not damning with faint praise.

Dan Curtis, the producer behind Dark Shadows, also produced such TV gems as the Night Stalker series of movies and the classic gem Trilogy of Terror. We could use a guy with his talents on the tube today.

Dark Shadows is a bat-shit insane 60s soap with witches, vampires, Frankensteins and werewolves that was shot live to tape. The network didn't allow for an editing budget, so retakes didn't happen. The set actually catches fire in an ep and they keep taping. You hear crew members battling a fire offscreen while a tender dialogue scene plays out.

Wow, that just seals the deal.

It's the main reason I watched. The show has this crazy live energy to it that's a lot of fun - actors forget lines, crew members wander into shots, and it all flies, under the edict of "no one will ever see this shit again". Today, it's the only soap that's been released in its entirety on home video.
But the actual eps wil take you years to get through. Buy the bloopers DVD.

Dude, there are 26 dvd box sets of this series. When I was covering their releases in my dvd column I was amazed that it kept going... but it did finally stop. Something like 1,500 episodes. You're lucky you've got Netflix, otherwise you might need a loan to check it all out.

With the film on the horizon, I'm interested in watching some episodes of this series. I don't have the time (or energy) to watch EVERY single episode but would someone familiar with the series recommend the very best episodes to check out.
