Zombies

They really need their own thread.

I thought this was a good article. Not a lot of new stuff for horror fans to chew on, but it gives a shout out to Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things.

Zach Snyder's vision of the instant in Cell gives me hope this'll be one of the great zombie films. I've yet to read the book, though...

I can't believe there's a Zombie Movie Database.

As a quick reference tool (we can't really ever be too redundant while discussing this awesome topic), I've included these threads below. It's also amazing how un-thorough our search function can be (I had to dig for a few of these) when typing "Zombie" or "Zombies" for words in thread titles just isn't good enough. But don't worry, I'm here on the case.

Lesser-known zombie films...

I like that the link also reads "highlight=zombie" so the word zombie appears in the bloody RED color. Nice inadvertent (or not) touch.

Is there a World War Z discussion somewhere? I tapped out just past the halfway point. Too repetitious.

Even with the glut of zombie movies in the last few years, by gum, I still love 'em.

I mentioned it in the "Is the Horror Novel Dead?" thread after I read it. And Darkmite8 rferenced it in the "Nonsensical Zombie Question" thread.

Well "GEEK" does have a couple definitions.

1. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
2. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

A lot of people were talking shit about Romero's newest Dead flick, but I can't help but think this one will be great. The living dead concept stripped down to it's bare original bones is what the concept needs. Some primal, in the woods, reptilian brain stuff.

Is it me, or are the two scripts all young writers seem to have either 1) 9/11 scripts, or 2) Zombie scripts? I have a friend who has terrible taste in movies, and he asked me to read his zombie script, and, frankly, I'm dreading it.

Well, atleast it's not a combination. That might be a tad tasteless.

Although it would be a film I would go see.

Shit, I forgot about the related Masters of Horror ep: Joe Dante's HOMECOMING.

Not exactly what the connotation of "9-11/zombie flick" may conjure, but it's a start.

. . . Or post innumerable useful reference links on websites? God-DAMN but you're thorough. Has Alex put you on the payroll yet? You should easily get paid TWICE what I do for the book reviews.*

I just got three credit hours for Zombies: The Living Dead in Literature, Film, and Culture, so I'm pretty much the greatest zombie expert ever. Someone linked to our zombie walk here: http://www.chud.com/forums/showthrea...ighlight=class

Seriously though, it was a great class, and surprisingly, I found the origins of the zombie in Haitian culture way more interesting than all of their appearances in movies. I liked the Survival Guide well enough, but I thought World War Z was a bit of a slog. To be fair, though, I wasn't a zombie nerd before the class. I signed up for it having only seen the Dawn remake.

Good thread.

Despite the unqualified success of The Walking Dead, I think the great zombie comic has yet to be written.

I'm reading the 1st 2 graphic novels, and I think it's qualified. What's your umbrage?
I just bought 5 & 6, but haven't read them yet; it starts to slow down a little after 1 & 2. That may not be to everyone's liking. But there's some REAL good action in 4, I think. All kinds of zombie & non-zombie violence goodness. But, as the author says in the intro to #1, he's tryting intentionally to chart unfamiliar territory here. He was always frustrated w/ the nagging "Yeah, but THEN what happened?" traditional zombie movies always seem to leave you with. getting dragged out of your comfort zone, even if it turns out to be fun, can be upsetting.
I love the intro text on the back of the 1st book.

How many hours are in a day when you don't spend half of them watching television? When is the last time any of us REALLY worked to get something that we wanted? How long has it been since any of us really NEEDED something that we WANTED? The world we knew is gone. The world of commerce and frivolous necessity has been replaced by a world of survival and responsibility. An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months society has crumbled, no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally start living.

My problem with the series is dialogue, mostly. My opinion - and it is the minority opinion - I don't think Kirkman can write it that well. And once they hit the prison and tangled with those survialists with the zombie-gladiator pit my ability to suspend disbelief was tested and failed.

I did enjoy the first two trades quite a bit. It's not a bad series, and it gave the horror comic genre a shot in the arm in general; I just think it could be done better.

I had hopes for Warren Ellis' Black Gas, but from the last issue I have no idea where the fuck it is going.

BTW, when I referred to TWD's 'unqualified success' I meant it has been both commercially and critically successful. No one can argue with that.

Gotcha, the OTHER definition.
I agree re: the dialogue. I started Trade # 5 last night. I'm only a few pages into it, but it loks like we got action comin' our way.
I finished Trades 5 & 6 whilst waiting for the work on my car to get finished this afternoon, and all I can say is: Ho-lee SHIT! The action picks up CONSIDERABLE. Blood! Gore! Torture! Mayhem! Suspense! Shocks & surprises! I got iffy on this title a little while ago, but figured I'd give it some more time and see if it couldn't work the kinks out. God-DAMN but I'm glad I did.

I had to tap out after the third Walking Dead trade. I just couldn't connect with the characters. I think Kirkman stumbled by defining them through expositionary dialogue instead of their actions. But I stuck around for the zombie grue and the promise of a good exploration of a Romero-zombie universe. Unfortunately, by the third trade it was obvious he had no original ideas to explore. He was just rehashing themes from Romero's movies. Finally he dropped all pretense of being different and lifted dialogue directly from the films.
"WE'RE THE WALKING DEAD!" in extra big font! Shockorama!

For people looking to expand the zombie section of their library, I suggest David Wellington - he's got a pretty solid zombie trilogy out right now - Monster Island, Monster Nation, and Monster World. To be honest, I've only read the first two, but the last has had very good things spoken & written about it.

Yeah, I really dug that one as well.

More STUBBS THE ZOMBIE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, or PLEASANTVILLE (tongue-in-cheek satirical tone and setting), than the homage that was SHAUN OF THE DEAD, etc.

EDIT: Also reminded me a bit of the throwback WAKER SAFETY short from the Grimm Grotto Goods guys who made WHEN ZOMBIES ATTACK short and comic.

I own a copy of "Zombietown" and I've had the chance to play it once. I enjoyed it alot. Different set up and strategy involved than Zombies!!! There's a day timer that counts down how many days have passed and the object is to try to fortify more homes and rescue more survivors than your opponents, as well as survive the longest. And similar to Zombies!!! you can thwart your opponents and force them to a speedier death.

Also a good game - Last Night on Earth. It's a cooperative board game that has several game "scenarios" you can play with different characters. You have two groups - one for the players who want to control the "heroes" and two people to control the zombies.

An authentic good review for ZOMBIE STRIPPERS!
http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/ar...4/film--review

It’s funny that this flick should appear almost exactly a year after the failure of Grindhouse, as Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s $100 million monument to garbage culture was sorely lacking the subversive inquiry that makes this sort of schlock stand out. Tarantino and Rodriguez offered a megabudget wax museum, whereas Zombie Strippers is the real deal. The ad campaign might suggest shades of Grindhouse, but Lee’s film is far more closely aligned with the little-seen 1996 oddity Killer Condom, in which director Martin Walz used a hungry, toothy prophylactic attacking bathhouses as a barely disguised allegory for political and public indifference to the initial outbreak of AIDS. Seriously.

Yeah, Fido was great. Carrie Ann Moss was just a great subversion (or inversion) of the 1950s TV mom. Sort of, June Cleaver with an actual cleaver.

I thought Fido was lame. There have already been a million satires of 50's suburbia and this brought nothing new to the table. Plus the narrative was just a rambling mess.

Not shilling this, as I haven't seen it, but apparently ZOMBIES ZOMBIES ZOMBIES: ZOMBIES VS STRIPPERS (not to be confused with ZOMBIE STRIPPERS) was filmed here in my resident town of Orlando.

My wife's co-worker was an extra and she (of all people... my wife refuses to watch zombie flicks) brought it to my attention.

Much harder to do now, with the server move, Creature Corner expiration, and sub-par search function.

I can't work under these conditions!
