Doug Stanhope

I used to wonder why Nick had such hatred directed towards Patton Oswalt. I always found Oswalt to be a pretty funny comedian with a quick wit, great jokes aimed at geeks such as myself, and a set list that was usually 99% fresh material. Earlier this year, I got a copy of Joe Rogan's "Shiny Happy Jihad" and found it to be one of the funniest albums I had heard in a LONG time. As Rogan only has one CD available on iTunes, I turned my attention towards Doug Stanhope as I remember him being the other guy that "ruined" the Man Show (as is the view among my peers, but that show was dead long before Rogan and Stanhope showed up.)

I purchased a copy of DEADBEAT HERO the other day and after just one listen, I finally understood Nick's dismissal of Oswlat. On more than one occasion, I contemplated pulling the car over simply because I was laughing so hard for so long. Easily one of the most fearless comedians I've ever heard, cracking jokes on every taboo subject from cop shooting ("pigs in a blanket"), turning his mother into a suicide bomber, abortion, school shootings, etc. While you might be tempted to write it off as shock tactics, the jokes are REALLY funny. Not since David Cross' SHUT UP YOU FUCKING BABY have I felt so bad for laughing so hard. I could go on for a good while about how great his drunken rambling style is (although I'll admit it's an acquired taste) or his utter lack of shame, but this post is getting long enough.
I
Long story short: Nick, you were right and I was wrong. Thanks

C'mon now, Patton is great as is Stanhope. Just different. Saw Doug a few months ago and he fucking killed. I was pretty close to puking from laughing too hard. You should check out Great White Stanhope. Great cd.

I don't understand how Stanhope being great makes Oswalt unfunny. Also, I was gonna give SHINY HAPPY JIHAD a listen but I don't know if we're on the same wavelength for comedy if you think SHUT UP YOU FUCKING BABY is a great album. I love IT'S NOT FUNNY but BABY just seems to be a series of half-assed impressions designed to make fun of various groups.

I still like Oswalt, but Stanhope's such a brute force that Oswalt is like a Mike's Hard Lemonade to Stanhope's shooter of Everclear. I'm just saying I see where Nick is coming from.

I almost never listen to the first disc of IT'S NOT FUNNY, but the second disc is gold. I also love it because I discovered it during a turning point in my life when I was just starting to question the world around me rather than take my mother's word for it.

"Answer your telephone!"

And now we return to the topic at hand...

Wasn't Doug Stanhope the guy on the Aristocrats movie that gave his rendition of the joke in front of his infant son?

"What were the towers insulated with...old tires and skunks???"

"If Bruce doesn't rollerblade, then the terrorists win!"

C'mon, David Cross is awesome...but, he does seem to be the death of any good show he's on, regardless of his performance (which was genius on Arrested Development and Mr. Show).

Oh yeah, and I second this..."Answer your telephone!" lol
