Kapitol Leters and Miss Steaks.

How is it that some Chewers (no need to point them out) are still posting with glaring and obvious mistakes ?

Such as the complete omission of capital letters in every sentence, yet taking the time to put them in a name ? I'm not talking about a simple letter mistake or a conjugation one, but the ones that jump right out in your face.

After pointing one out, I've had this as a reply:

Quote:
"nothing more annoying than a grammer nazi on a message board".
When english is your native language, you have no excuse, especially when your posts are the sole mean of communication with the others on the boards, Anthrax letters aside.

So is this sheer intellectual laziness ? Or teenage rebellion ?
Why do you put that space between the end of your sentences and the question mark?
Yeah, and isn't "english" supposed to be capitalized too?
Hey did you guys know war is when the sandal of the world meet the scrotum of men.
War... it's fantastic.
You should have capitalized the 'e' in English, as it's a proper noun. Plus, it's part of a huge run-on sentence.

Conjugation mistakes do jump right out at me. As do uses of the wrong "your/you're," the wrong "there/their/they're," and the wrong "to/too/two." Persons who cannot retain the fact that one only uses an apostrophe to make something possessive, not to pluralize it, make me hate humanity (I am the asshole who fixes signs in restaurants). Errors in punctuation don't catch my eye as often, but I know others who are driven insane by the sight of an oddly placed comma.

I think it's a charming combination of laziness, ignorance, and stupidity.

edited to fix a small spelling error. Oh, the crushing irony...
You forgot to put an 's' at the end of "make".

You like that quote I got it from a random philosophy major's Facebook page.

Also it's means of communication.
I'm from Kentucky. The only thing we conjugate is our cousins.
Also, I don't think anthrax should be capitalized there.
I think you're right. The CDC doesn't capitalize it.

some people will try to tell you that typing in all lower-case is a stylistic choice. these people are full of shit; e.e. cummings did not intend to start a revolution.

That's a fragment. This sort of thing is somewhat acceptable in casual writing that's meant to approximate speech, but this sentence should probably be a part of the preceding paragraph, since it's continuing the line of thinking. It also has some problems in terms of parallel structure, because the first part of the sentence refers to a state based on something that occurred in the past ("the complete omission of...") and the second part refers directly to an action. The second part is additionally problematic because of the missing subject. It just doesn't read well at all.
And non sequitur Grimace over here needs a question mark, unless he's telling us what we like.

I will say there is a higher standard of spelling/grammar expected here than any other board I've posted on.

It's the infinitive "to make." You don't pluralize it.

My Master's thesis proposal would have been a mess if not for the bundle of grammar neuroses we see before us.

"Possessive" has 4 "S"s in it (or is that "S's"? Damn you, humanity!).

That would be "s"s. I've seen it written out in dialogue form as "esses," though, which I find funny for some reason.
i type in all lower cases cause i know it drives you batty, for whatever lame brain reason. you don't like my posts? put me on your ignore list. but let me know ahead of time, so i can clear my calender and spend the rest of the week crying about it.

I'm really not the type to care about every single mistake in a post, partly because I'll make some.

English is not my first language. What's your excuse ?

Everyone should really shape up their grammar. This isn't just any message board, it has featured such prolific posters as swedish miyagi and Fabfunk
post #38 of 149
Uh, fabfunk isn't capitalized, you dolt.

I am sorry fabfunk is not only a legend but a gentleman good sirs.

I was typing too quickly and missed an 's'. Thanks to Darkmite for helping me achieve perfection.

English isn't your first language. You make glaring errors in syntax and conjugation in the post in which you complain about the miserable state of others' writing. Are you really the one to be calling out the careless native speakers on the board? It's just going to end badly.

Yes. There are worse things being raped by Chud members than the English language.

This depends on the style guide you're using, I think. If you go with Associated Press, commas always go inside the quotation marks, regardless of context. According to this site, the Gregg manual suggests the same. The AP and Gregg Manuals are two of the bigger resources, but there may be some grammarians who disagree.

It's mainly the whole "stylistic" capital letters thing that is really annoying. I honestly didn't intend to call out the entire board, especially over mistakes I know I'm making. Should have stuck with the capital letter and that's it.
