Ron Paul Tops McCain in Cash on Hand

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos Reports: Though often regarded as a longshot candidate for president, Republican Ron Paul tells ABC News that he has an impressive $2.4 million in cash on hand after raising an equal amount during the second quarter, putting him ahead of one-time Republican frontrunner John McCain, who reported this week he has only $2 million in the bank.

In an exclusive interview taped Friday and airing Sunday on "This Week," Paul said his campaign is on a better trajectory than McCain's.

"I think some of the candidates are on the down-slope, and we're on the up-slope," said Paul.

Paul's cash on hand puts him in third place in the Republican field in that important metric, although he is well behind leader Rudy Giuliani, who has $18 million in the bank, and Mitt Romney, with $12 million.

Paul, who polls show with support in the low single digits, said his surprisingly strong fundraising is the best measure of his support.

"I think people have underestimated the number of people in this country who are interested in a freedom message," says the Republican congressman from Texas, who has strong libertarian leanings.
I like Ron Paul. He has no chance, but perhaps he can shake things up. Is that a good or bad thing?

I hate the focus on how much money each candidate has in their "war chest". Imagine if that money was used for, oh I don't know, funding social programs or used to support organizations that fall in line with the candidate's platform. I'd be more impressed with that than how many "W '08"* bumper stickers can be made.

*I expect the term-limiting portion of the Constitution to be removed by the end of the year.

No disrespect to anyone who supports the guy but I personally can't stand Ron Paul. The man is the Republican answer to Kucinich and even then he's got this noxious libertarian streak in him.

He believes in the antiquated idea of the gold standard and is an ardent isolationist. I can't understand what in the hell is the facination with this guy?

And so what if he's got more cash than McCain. McCain for all intensive purposes is fucked (Unless he pulls a move ala Kerry).

I read this as: Ron Paul out, does John McCain.

The appeal of the man is that he is probably the last of the honest politicians. You may not like what he stands for, but if you were to look at his record, I think you'd respect him. He voted against the Iraq war, against the bullshit patriot act, and takes no corporate money. I don't think he is an isolationist judging from his platform, he just doesn't believe America should go around sticking it's nose in other countries business. Therein lies his appeal. God knows America could use a change of direction, you'd be better off electing my dog than pretty much anybody else running right now.

You know, if it came down to any of the other GOP candidates versus Ron Paul, I'd vote for Paul, even with his conservative stance on social issues and welfare programs. He does appear to be the only sane one at the republican debates. I love having him in the race and hope he persists as long as possible, or even runs as an independent, because that would allow him to participate in debates, which would be hilarious.

For a second there, I thought the title of the thread was RuPaul outdoes John McCain.

I don't know much about Paul, but I hate the shills he's got working for him all over the place. They're infesting every corner of Youtube, and were calling in to NPR the other day. Almost as bad as Jehovah's Witnesses.

Internet laze

Is Ron Paul basically a libertarian? It seems like he's one of the candidates, like McCain was in '00, who gains popularity speaking out on issues he knows will attract left or center leaning votes.

I haven't been following the Presidential race enough, like where all these guys stand. What's Bloomberg's deal? Is he on a similar page?

Bloomberg's just left the Republican party (he left the Democrats in 2001). Some say he'll try a run as an independant, but he's not officially in the running as yet.

FYI, by my count, including all the third party candidates, there are currently 44 people running for President (19 of them are Democrats/Republicans).

Don't worry about following the race so far...it's still ridiculously early.

I ask about Bloomberg b/c I don't understand if he did it for political ideology reasons or if he did it just to distance himself from the Republican mess.

It seems like Ron Paul has been successful because he remains a conservative, and from what I've heard he often sounds like a conservative, but he gets a lot of attention for breaking from the Republican party on certain big issues, like the war, which is why I compared him to a third party candidate.

Both. Bloomberg is fairly liberal on social issues, but he would've stuck with the GOP if their popularity hadn't waned.

Anything that helps that a-hole McCain go down in flames makes me smile. I can't stand that hypocritical bastard. I was actually going to give him another chance until he ferried that odious Military Commissions Act through Congress last year.

Ron Paul's a lunatic, but at least he understands something no other republican candidate does, namely that torture is evil and it hurts our standing in the international community. No one else seems to get that. Those other assholes just want to out masculine each other by spouting off one cliche tough guy phrase after another. What a bunch of twits.
