I only managed to catch part of Madonna's set - she was amazing. It's a shame they're only being carried on MSN's unreliable online feed at the moment. I really want to see Crowded House's set in Australia and The Police in NY and will slog through the MSN feeds when I have a second to try to see them, or hope they turn up on the YouTube.

It's interesting the coverage this thing is getting from the mainstream media and how every story takes potshots at the effort. Not to bring politics into it, but they went so far as to get a negative sound bite from Bob Geldof. wtf?

Wow, the NY stream is really choppy all of sudden. Anybody else having problems?

These event concerts that are designed to raise awareness, as opposed to money, always make me scratch my head a bit. Are they effective? Even a little bit? I went to the Tibetan Freedom show when it was in New York a few (God, more than a few, really) years ago. I didn't give a shit about the Tibetans. I gave a shit about seeing Bjork and The Beasties Boys and half of REM and some others. I ignored a bunch of pamphlets and speeches that day, let me tell you.

I highly doubt the bleach blondes bimbos that were jigging to Ludacris' "Moneymaker" and Akon's "I Wanna Fuck You" were thinking about recylcing and conserving energy.
Bon Jovi the vampire slayer was just on really liked the set, and The Smashing Pumpkins are rocking the stage.

That was my first reaction - WTF is going on here.

Geldof has been pretty vocal about this from the time they announced it -- he doesn't think they have solid goals other than to "bring awareness," which he doesn't think merits the time and energy put into the undertaking. And there's some ill-will because Live Earth and Live Aid/8 sound a little too similar and people think he's involved with it.

Sure, it's only one song in but the Police sound great.

I really wish they were giving some acts longer than 20 minutes.

I agree i was kind of skeptic about them but they're sounding ace.

Does Andy really need the help on Message in a Bottle?

And I loved that, while the pig said "SOS", underneath that it read "Save Our Sausage".

Ah, it was a closing jam of sorts.

All kinds of excited about the show next week now.

Gee, you think they could have ended the London and NYC shows with something a little more inspiring than "Thank you and good night!"

Like announcing a bid to run for President perhaps?
Good stuff but really abrupt ending. I guess after nine hours they're just ready to be done.
Because of my new job I had no idea about this until this morning at 6am when I was getting ready to go to bed and was flipping thru channels and was like....Oh fuck.

I think I finally took a nap around noon.

It's always a good night when the pig shows up....Missed the police but i've recorded every channel that is showing it(universal HD has been great) and will spend most of tomorrow and monday watching all the things I missed.

Andy didn't look to thrilled to see Mayer. Plus, Sting missed a note which means Stewart is going to take a swing at him backstage.

I just want to see video of AFI playing in day light. I didn't even know Taking Back Sunday was on it until this morning.

The entire Metallica performance was great, Genesis was also bad asshole. I think Linken park was my favorite, they played all good songs (I know I am 30 and love Linkin Park, dont hate me)

Really cool show(s) all around, wish I was into music when Live Aid happened and not like 10.

Being a long time Genesis fan I have to chime in on this comment. Their act is better suited for night as the light show helps out because it's no secret that Phil is not exactly Mr. Excitement. Now when he's drumming it's a different story but even being a fan I have to admit their segment was a disappointment and they should have worked out an after sundown slot.

Also, Phil needs to start wearing a hat.

Bon Jovi was great and I could have listened to them for another hour (I love me some Richie). Also loved seeing the pig and Waters was solid and considering I'm not a big Police fan I was not paying that much attention but Andy and Sting seemed uncomfortable.
Wow, did everyone suck or did Linkin Park steal the show?
Genesis to me will never be Genesis unless those vocals be that of Peter Gabriel.
Fuck me, the BBC coverage was piss poor.

They constantly cut away from the better acts (Metallica, Beastie Boys) to show us what was happening in Hamburg.

Then they show the fucking Pussycat Dolls in full. Fuck the BBC.

Though Chris Rock/Gervais double act was hilarious.

Yeah, Phil Collins was pretty bland as a front man, just sort of meandering around the stage.

I have to wonder how much pressure the last few NYC acts were under to wrap things up before 11 for the benefit of prime time. You could sort of sense they all felt a little rushed.

Foo Fighters was still the best performance I saw as far as being the total package of performance and crowd reaction. They could have played for three hours and that crowd would't have minded one bit.

I stayed up way too late last night watching a reply of the Foo Fighters. Very good.

And I was shocked as well about the daytime slot for Genesis. Wembley looked half empty and Genesis looked half interested.

Also Comedy Central replayed the "Manbearpig" episode of South Park last night, which is one of their numerous shots at Al Gore and Global Warming.

It was pretty cool when Gogol came out and played with Madonna. Funny to see Eugene dancing among the choreographed crew.

The Madonna set was definitely the most entertaining that I saw. Once you got past the fact that the Police were back together it was a very dull set. That's what people are paying $100+ for? Just buy the damn Live Album in a couple months.

The Madonna/Gogol thing was awesome and made the whole event for me; I couldn't resist the Spinal Tap set either, especially with the army of bassists.

I was mildly surprised how much I liked the Keith Urban/Alicia Keys duet on Gimme Shelter - he can rip it up when he wants to, and it was the first time I'd heard Keys really belt something out old-school. Roger Waters seemed to be in good form, too. I need to catch up with Crowded House - that was the only act that I really wanted to see that I missed.

It was interesting listening to the XM coverage - the hosts couldn't stop laughing about UB40, who were supposed to play a 20 minute set and played about 85. Which about 85 minutes more of UB40 than anyone really needs.

Was anyone else as seriously annoyed with the NBC coverage as I was? I wound up watching the Waters/Police sets online, as there wasn't any live coverage of even the stateside stuff. What bullshit.
Spinal Tap was hilarious. I think Madonna and Crowded House won the night for me. Crowded House was incredible. You got the sense that they wanted to keep playing and I think everyone would have loved that, especially me.

As someone who was at the London show, I can tell you that, yes, we were deeply enjoying Metallica, Foo Fighters, Madonna, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Beastie Boys (loved them!!!). The strangest part of the show -probably not shown in the US, I would imagine - was Damien Rice and, uh, some other bloke that sounds exactly like him singing Que Sera Sera. They felt it was appropriate (so they said). As the chorus says, what ever will be will be, that seemed like a strange sentiment.

Otherwise, I loved most of the bands (the aforementioned bands, Razorlight, Kasabian, even Keane), but James Blunt and the Black Eyed Peas could (OK, should) have just not come. But it did allow me to go out and get some wonderfully overpriced wine/Pimms & Lemonade. It was a great atmosphere, except for when the beer ran out near the Foo Fighters set.

Metallica:

1. "Enter Sandman"
2. "Sad But True"
3. "Nothing Else Matters".

The same set list they played at the "Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert" over 10 years ago. Way to keep things fresh guys. For God's sake, don't play anything new for free.

I only caught one Madonna tune, and while I'm no fan of Madonna I thought it was very sweet.
