So, they did do that as part of the study... although one could argue that if guys in better shape are more confident (I don't know what the research says on this), that correlation may exist in women's minds when choosing from pictures or silhouettes, so that might not even remove the effect of that potential third variable.
It is also possible in the part of the study where they interviewed men, they may have tried to control for some of that... it is impossible to say without seeing the actual study.
