Candyman (1992)

Man, Xander Berkeley can't catch a break, can he? I was so sure he was going to make it through this film without being torn up by sharp metal a la Terminator 2. No such luck.

Also, I think I love Clive Barker too much to ever be able to judge any of his movies objectively. He's a man after my own hellbound heart, and I can't wait to check out Lord of Illusions next.

I hated Lord of Illusions actually. It felt so horrifically half assed and wet, but I've told to give it another go so let us know how that works out for you.
Candyman ranks as one of my all time freaky cinema going experiences. To meet my friends and get to the cinema I had to catch this bus system in Adelaide that for some part of the journey locks onto a rail track, and the bus completely smoooshed this dude who flung himself in front of the thing as an act of suicide (he failed). I was a bit shaken when I saw the film so it was a waaaaaaay creepy experience.
Terrific film with a great atmosphere this one.Has a eally good score that I was really taken with until I got sick to death of Phil Fucking Glass.
Also: Virginia Madson. One of my all time fave crushes.

Second the Virginia Madsen crush.

The scariest thing about this flick is it reminds me of the time our suburban asses were driving home from downtown Chicago at 1am, and stopped in a parking lot to take a leak. Midstream, we look over to see the "Cabrini Green" sign staring back at us.

Ah, young and stupid.

I revisit this one rather frequently and the bathtub scene even more frequently.

I swear this is the last English-language horror film ever made that was actually scary.

And my Virginia Madsen lust knows no end.

I like Lord Of Illusions. It's a great underrated piece. Scott Bakula really works as the lead, and well, Famke Janssen is just plain hot. I think it's also the only movie I can think of where Daniel Von Bargen is the main villain. It's also got a cool cameo by Vincent Schiavelli.

Candyman is great, as is the twist at the end. I haven't seen any of the others, but the public bathroom scene is fucking repugnant, and Virginia Madsen's hotness is duly noted. She just keeps getting hotter.

Xander never gets any luck. Always playing cowardly villains and the like. Right up there with Anthony Heald and Steve Tobolowsky.

He was a pretty cool dude in Gattaca.

Agreed on all counts. I think Madsen was especially hot in The Prophecy. I was a little high when I went to see Candyman, and probably for that reason, the bathroom scene freaked me out to the point I lost sleep for weeks. I can't think of another movie that affected me so deeply. I haven't even bothered w/ any of the sequels, because my memories of the 1st are just so perfect.

And I still won't say his name 5 times in the mirror. . .

Probably the last great Barker adaptation. Lord of Illusions isn't really that bad, but half-assed special effects, and what I consider to be the complete miscasting of Bargen as Nix kind of ruined it for me.

I never really found this film that frightening (Todd's Brobdingnagian sized Hook didn't really help in that regard), but Todd's and Madsen's performances more than made up for that.

And Madsen remains smoking hot til this day.

There's already a thread for Candyman:

I was in college the last time I saw this. My roomate and I split a bottle of Bacardi 151 and caught a special Halloween midnight screening. I was so drunk, I barely even remember the experience, but I remember it being a great fucking time.

I'm reminded about my continuing irritation that Nightbreed cannot be obtained in the UK.

Lord of Iluusions is a decidedly flawed piece, but it definitely has its moments, and, unlike Candyman, benefits from Barker's visual style.
Not that Candyman isn't excellent, mind you. Bernard Rose also did the little-known Paperhouse back in the 80s.

My mistake. I thought that was the title to one of the sequels.

Nah, it was just me being overly clever.

Glad you liked this film Patrick, it's always been one of my favourites. It was also the first Adult film I ever saw at a cinema, my Uncle being the unflinching bastard that he was took me to see it when it hit England in 93, I was about eight at the time. All I can remember is Todd's voice nearly destroying the sound system.

Sick of Phillip Glass??

I love the movie, but god help me, I can't stop cracking up whenever Ted Raimi shows up onscreen.

I've seen the second one (from Bill Condon!) which was serviceable- has anyone caught the fourth?

Candyman is a fantasic example of why Clive Barker is 'the man.' Even though he didn't direct it his style is still stamped pretty clearly all over every inch of this film. It's dark, it's disturbing, it's sexual, it's even romantic in some kind of fucked up way. And I have to say, Virginia Madsen is hauntingly beautiful and she played her role really really well.

Oh man, now I have the biggest urge to rewatch it. I guess I know what I'm doing tonight after work... (and I ain't saying Candyman 5 times into my mirror, that still gives me chills)

Something Robert Altman picked up when he cast her as an angel in Praire Home Companion. Kinda like she's an angel OF DEATH here. Geez, the connections...

One of the first DVDs to really showcase my sound system. My walls vibrated when Candyman first speaks in the parking garage.

She really does look like an angel, she has that eerie glow and perfect beauty. How is it possible for a human being to be so flawless?!?

For me, this is easily the best horror movie of the '90s. It's gothic in a contemtorary setting; it plays on the fears that we suburbanites have of the inner-city; and, unlike 99% of horror movies released, it's actually scary.

I remember Barker on Letterman back in the day talking about Candyman. He also told a funny story about how he watched an autopsy and how he freaked when the corpse's eyelids flickered open, brought on by the corpse's skin tightening over the skull, to no end of amusement for the coroners.

I liked LoI and hoped it would be the start of a franchise. 10 years later, still waiting.
